Lesson for those thinking to choose the role of the traitor: If his side win, the leader there can't trust a traitor. So no matter what, the traitor has a shitty end. The worst after death, when he meets his maker.

After watching the new Vikings show, I must say.. they completely butchered the history... So Edmund was actually a fierce warrior and leader who waged many battles against Cnut.. Yet on the show he's just a spoiled little brat that achieves nothing whatsover.. During the Lothbrok plot, the show was fantastic, however ever since they relaunched it with the new cast, they completely failed in every aspect.. The last season was utterly horrible.. They tell a goddamn made up story nobody gives a sh*t about.. Instead of that, they should have focused on actual battles, plots and intrigues.

The same thing happened a few times in English history. Richard III had a supposed ally at the Battle of Bosworth who watched from the sidelines as a neutral, before deciding to fight against Richard when the tide turned in Henry Tudor's favour.

Which part of Sweden did Knud (Canute) rule? Jämtland was part of Norway at that time, while Skåne and Blekinge part of Denmark. They were later conquered by Sweden but not part of Sweden as yet.

Here's how I imagine it: Eadric did not care who ruled, and thought he'd rather preserve his subjects. Cnut catches up to him They negotiate, Cnut let him know he'll die Eadric says he did nothing wrong Cnut says "no, you manipulated everything within the rules" "But you'd be an idiot if you thought I'd let you live" Eadric is executed Cnut rules like Ragnar desired to in the Vikings The End

This time period would make a most excellent hbo show. It has everything. Badass Viking warlords with awesome names, inept English king who flees in exile to Normandy, conniving second wife queen who alienates and splits the royal family apart, kickass warrior princes of Aethelred - including one Chosen One who dies at the worst possible time and another who takes his mantle in Ironside. Backstabbing and doublecrossing vassal. Other vassals infighting and destroying the royal fleet, and the hope of England with it. And general treachery, bloodshed, warfare, mayhem, tragedy, and loss everywhere. I mean, Aethelred’s reign begins with treachery with his mom killing his brother. It ends with treachery. And you could even extend the series through Cnut’s reign, when Aethelred’s younger sons - Edward the confessor and his brother - come back to England years later. The Confessor’s brother comes back from Normandy on invitation from another “loyal vassal” only to be stabbed in the back by the guy, loyal to Cnut the whole time. And then it’s down to the Confessor to save the Wessex house. Just an excellent time period. I’d devour a good show or movie based on it.

Aethelred the Unready is a Victorian misnomer. His proper nickname "unred" means "the badly counseled". Although one could argue the bad counsel was on him, as it mostly consisted of his drinking buddies and high-born bandits.

Doesn't this technically mean the age of the Saxons ended 50 years earlier by Cnut the Great, and not William the Conqueror in 1066?
@HistoryMarche
@HistoryMarche 5 лет назад
Very interesting question and one that I expected someone to pose much earlier. Alas, yes, the Danish conquest of England implies just that. However, it's not that straightforward, I think. The Danes weren't trying to stamp out all-things-Saxon. But what the Danish conquest of England did do is weaken it politically. I think that the Saxon elite never fully recovered and the effects of the conquest of Canute could still be felt when William came around, arguably making things easier for the Normans.
@kafon6368
@kafon6368 5 лет назад
@@HistoryMarche It does give a misconception that William was the first to do it. Cnut is all but invisible in popular media. Before your video I thought he was a random viking that the Saxons _defeated_ 🤣
