The Battle of Castillon was fought on 17 July 1453 in Gascony near the town of Castillon-sur-Dordogne (later Castillon-la-Bataille), between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France.
The English commander John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, led his army into a fortified French encampment without waiting for reinforcements. Talbot then refused to withdraw even after realizing the strength of the French position, causing his men to suffer extensive casualties from the French artillery.
The battle resulted in the English losing almost all their holdings in France - especially Gascony (Aquitaine), an English possession for the previous three centuries. It is regarded as a decisive French victory and marked the end of the Hundred Years' War.

Excellant video ! It's not common to find a good video about the Battle of Castillon in English (maybe the most important battle of the Hundred Years' War) - Englishmen or Americans speak only about the Battle of Azincourt.

Yes, English in particular never mention the fact that they LOST the war. It is IMPOSSIBLE to find a good video in English about the end of the Hundred Years War because they are sore losers. They are so unsportsmanlike that they invented the nOrMaNs just to say that they weren't defeated by the French

Dude I love these!!! Im a military history nut, Currently studyng 5 new Books on Joan of Ark. And 100 Years War. If you have not studied her people out there, you need to. She was amazing. Not only was she was a woman, but she was the youngest person to ever command a major army. Catholic or non Catholic, she was a good warrior. I have two books that just speak of her military mind. She saves france.. Or gets them gone with momentum. And then for her thankful. Thankfulness, the king doesnt even resuce her! LOL They are so brutal back then. The king didn't even try to and she got him crowned.. Well, actually, they tried to break her out of prison too, times. Two times, but was pretty lamp wristed. I could talk all day on this. I'll shut up. Great videos, guys. I love him.

John Talbot was captured and ransomed at the battle of Patay 1429, as a part of the deal he gave his parole that he would not take up arms against the French. He kept his word and commanded his troops without weapons or armour.

@@futurei0oo That's an idea that is excessively magnified. The common people never spoke any French. Only the aristocracy did, owing to their origin. And this lasted from the XIth (Hastings) to the early XIVth century. After that they had all switched to English. They however did adopt and keep a French moto - "Dieu et mon droit" - but apart from Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, they don't have a clue what it means.

All the territory which had been regained under Charles V was lost under Charles VI, the mad king. This king lost his reason, and, afterwards, he was mad most times; he could have some brief moments where he could recover his reason and take good decisions, but it didn't last. When you think that he was ready to hand the kingdom of France to the english without fighting! He had terrible episodes of madness, in which he was doing completely crazy things; for instance he was believing he was made of glass, and he could easily break. It was a terrible thing to have a demented king in a time in which the danger of losing the kingdom was so great.

In the Hundred years' was, France only had two good intelligent kings: Charles V, and Charles VII; the other ones were bad mediocre kings, and it is under their reign that the french suffered severe defeats which could have ended the kingdom of France and made it entirely english; the king "Jean le bon" was particularly stupid; the king Charles VI had the excuse of being mad.

Not sure it would have ended the Kingdom of France. The Plantagenêt's dream had always been to conquer the crown of France, because they were a powerful French House. England was just their base from which to achieve that dream. In the end their dynasty had to accept the fact that they would only keep the crown of England. But the place to be and rule was France, not England. So, if the English side had won, the whole thing would probably have become a bigger kingdom of France.

When you look at the commanders, and compare the timelines, most of these guys were veterans well into their 60s, during a time when medical care was rubbish and most people rarely lived past 40. Few of the commanders were what we would today consider “fighting age.” Remarkable men on both sides. Also, bad intelligence kills.
