In the late Spring of 2022, Russian forces who retreated from northern Ukraine after failure to take the capital, Kyiv, shift their focus to the eastern part of the country, Donbas. Here, since 2014, parts of Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been occupied by Russian proxy states, LPR and DPR. On the border with them, Ukraine has some of its most capable troops, well dug in and reinforced prior to the invasion, as limited advance in Donbas was seen as one of the alternatives to what actually happened, full-scale war. After the redeployment of troops which failed to take Kyiv to eastern Ukraine, new Russia's strategy is to encircle Ukrainian forces on the east, destroying them once and for all, and annex the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions which will open the road to further conquest of central Ukraine. Even more ambitious plans circulate with a commander of Russia's Central Military District, Rustam Minnekayev, declaring that the aim of the "second phase" of the so-called Special Military Operation is to fully seize Donbas and Southern Ukraine, establishing a land corridor with Transnistria. On April 10th, Russian army general Aleksandr Dvornikov is appointed as a commander of all military operations in Ukraine. Move that further emphasizes the Russian plans to shrug off defeats of the past and regain momentum. Completely ignoring the enemy’s capabilities and how well-fortified and urbanized Donbas actually is, the Russians decide to attack in the direction of key cities of Sloviyansk and Kramatorsk, focusing their efforts on Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk first.

The video is great but some of the info is incorrect. 79th did not return to the rear to replenish. They sat in exposed trenches on a hillside outside Grigorivka eating artillery and sustaing heavy casualties through the end of July before moving to the rear. They didn't move to the rear in June as the video states. How do I know? I was there with the 1st International Company Ivan Bohun Brigade and we supported them and stopped the Russian advance on Grigorivka and lost several men July 18th and it was 79th brigade that we spoke to and helped.
@TheWarArchive
@TheWarArchive 9 дней назад
Thank you for the valuable correction! There is much more information about the battle itself than about the aftermath, so some of my assumptions indeed might be incorrect. I also did not mean to say that 79th was withdrawn completely in June, but rather sometime after the battle. That's why the icon stays on the map around 29:18. But still, I appreciate such details and we will try to avoid such ambiguities in the future.

@J74556 Yeh it'd be nice. I watched the boys from 79th sit in an exposed trench and eat arty day in and day out. We did as well. The estimated daily arty average was 500 shells per day over the course of July to Hrihorivka

Didn’t expect the war to go the way it’s going at all, thought they was gonna roll through with tanks and stop at local stations for refueling and food. When that didn’t happened and the Ukrainians fought back, that shit turned into a quagmire real quick, in the north at least. But the Russia today is not the Russia that started this war.

With the benefit of hindsight, it becomes clear that the decision to defend Sievierodonetsk was mostly motivated by politics rather than military sense. If they had given the defense of the city on the wrong side of the river, maybe the could hold the front on the Siversky Donets and manage to defend Popasna, at least for more time.

Can anyone link any sources with more detail on the Popasna front? I remember it happening so fast at the time, that bulge just kept getting bigger and bigger. I'd love to learn more on what exactly happened. When Popasna fell, it really felt like the beginning of the end for Sievierodonetsk at the time.
@SD78
@SD78 9 дней назад
The decision to continually reinforce Sievierodonetsk was very foolish and dictated by political considerations rather than logic. Any sustained Russian advance within the city would result in the defending forces abandoning most of their heavy weapons and vehicles, then withdrawing under pressure across a river with no bridges. What actually happened was even worse, as both Sievierodonetsk AND Lysychansk were threatened with encirclement from the south and had to be evacuated in a haphazard withdrawal along dirt backroads. At any time, they could have pulled back across the river to anchor the eastern flank and redeployed these battalions south to keep the lines of communication open. But chose not to.

While the presence of 40,000 troops around Kyiv indicates a serious military threat, the broader context suggests that capturing Kyiv was the sole or primary objective. Instead, the operation around Kyiv likely served multiple purposes, including: • Applying psychological and political pressure on Ukraine. • Drawing Ukrainian forces away from other key areas. • Strengthening Russia’s negotiating position. • Testing the resilience and response of Ukrainian defenses. This multifaceted strategy supports the view that Russia’s initial actions around Kyiv were part of a broader plan to coerce Ukraine into negotiations, rather than solely aiming for the immediate capture of the capital. And also the reason on why they withdrew from Kyiv was an act of goodwill during the peace negotiations in Turkey.

I think the only chance for a ukranian victory, is to make the war last so long and cost so much, that Russian high command decides its not worth it. Wether that will happen or not is difficult to know for sure. Its worth keeping in mind, that because Russia is essentially an empire built around the Putin regime the decision to pull out is not necesarily made based on wether or not its tactically the sound move, but wether or not the regime can survive the blowback.
