In the early 80s when most people only had the Big Three networks on TV, specials like this were a HUGE deal.

I watched one of the early relay races from the 70's a few years ago. A bunch of the contestants had a shouting match over the rules, I thought they were going to start punching each other! I always thought it was just for fun, but they took it very seriously. (In the remake series a few years ago, they seemed more casual, but they still gave a lot of effort!)

Pernell Roberts! Wow, he was still a thing in the 80s? 😂
