Actually there was in Japan. It was a gimmick like Arcade machine that had physical doors over the screen that would open and close. It came out around 2010 from. What I remember.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Elevator Action Death Parade, it was a light gun game. Pretty much not related to the original game except in name if I'm honest.
Retro Core well i cannot deny to that as the gameplay so slow n after few play you will get bored as the gameplay still same without new gimmick inside it but still classic game with simple gameplay have their own charm specially with 8bit grapic and music one of my weakness also the reason i subcribe you to nostalgia n find new (but old) classic game
Este é um.dos meus jogos favoritos... desde a época Arcade aqui no Brasil..... sempre gastava as moedas que sobravam do pão no fliperama.....👍👍👍👍🤣🤣.. parabéns pelo vídeo... 🍀
We could of had an alternative C64 version: Sam Poole, the president of Datasoft, spoke to Zzap 64×magazine in issue 13 about various releases from Datasoft. It was here which he mentioned about Elevator Action and had the following to say: "As far as Elevator Action goes, the licensor, Taito - we originally had the licence but they pulled that back, so it will probably never be released."
Arcades in the U.S.A. were a booming business back in the late 70s and thru the 1980s. Perhaps that has something to do with all the subpar arcade ports released in the U.S. back then. No reason for arcade owners to purchase expensive arcade machines if their customers are playing the games at home. Just speculation but there's gotta be a reason why most of the ports licensed for release in the U.S. were never as good as the U.K.,European, Japanese ports were on the exact same console/computer.
@@RetroCorehave you seen the attempt by the C64 community to do an improved version? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8bShTWDxtkg.htmlsi=6qPST0kWSPt-Jm8j
While my friends had an Atari 2600 I had an MSX, and this with Rally-X were the games that made people go "HOLY SHIT YOU HAVE AN ARCADE AT HOME!" People were really amazed by it :) And like you said, the jerky scrolling doesn't hinder it at all, the game is insanely playable anyway :) Now, about the NES version... I have it here and while I didn't play it a lot, I don't remember the enemies having machine guns like that, nor your bulelts being so frigging fast. My NES clone isn't connected on any TV right now, but I am curious to check this out later, this really looks like a faulty rom or the emulator messing up things. And Elevator Action Returns... what a GODDAMN AWESOME GAME. I finished it a few times on the Saturn (With no continues even!), it's really a frigging excellent game that most people should know. It's one one of the finest Taito games ever made. And talking about Taito, I find funny how you say the MSX port is good because Taito handled it itself, and then I remember (and you should too, since you already covered it :D ) their Legend of Kage port which is a complete mess.... or their port of Scramble Formation (which I don't know you are ever going to cover) which is also a complete mess up on MSX.
Now to be quite honest the MSX 1 had a very good string of arcade ports, most of them by Namco (Bosconian, Rally-X, Galaga, Mappy, Tower of Druaga, Dig-Dug, Tank Battallion, King & Balloon, etc),.. it's just that Rally-X and Elevator Action were 2 *really* popular games around here.
I absolutely love Elevator Action Returns but I'd never be able to 1CC the game. I can reach the 5th stage without continuing though. As you said, it's one of Taito's all time greats.
I laughed at the reaction to the Commodore 64 version. I've somehow never played this despite owning both volumes of Taito Legends. Maybe the name puts me off, it sounds like the title for a porn film.
One more of the very original games made by Taito and included in the PS2 Taito Legends vol.1. The Game Boy ports came lately but, looks soooo good! :)
I love Elevator Action Mark. I believe that its one of the best titles ever made. I have the Game Boy and the later versions of this game and played the heck out of it during snack time in elementary school. Still have my copy of it and continued on purchasing the Game Boy Color and Advance version of it as I got older Well done as always my good man. Certainly outdo yourself in every video! 8^) Anthony...
It is a great game. So simple yet so fun and challenging. And to think, if we didn't have the original then the amazing Elevator Action Returns would have never been made.
Another great show Mark.In the 8 bit comps best ports are the MSX and Speccy,Amstrad CPC has nicer colorful graphs than the C64 which is crap. The GBA and Saturn are the most faithful with the arcade. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks for watching, David. I agree with you there. The speccy version is surprisingly good looking although I think the enemies and main player look like hippo/human cross breeds :)
Hmm... I was trying Elevator Action EX earlier and for me it was silky smooth, not choppy as you say in the voiceover or see in some of its footage here.
Why did you say Elevator Action EX has poor scrooling? It looks just fine! But even with that, this was the greatest comparison video I've ever watched, to be honest! Nice job with this!
Elevator Action 2 is one of those very underrated games. Games like Elevator Action Series, Rolling Thunder, Vice and more, there is no action games like this anymore. What other game more or less on this genre do you recommend? Something 2D "spy/stealth/tactical/action". There is the Ninja Five-O/Ninja Cop for GBA, but other than that I don't remember anything else.
I would like more games like this. Something new. It isn't the same, but something like Bionic Commando Re-armed is already nice. An Elevator Action 3 or a remake of EA2 like BCR would be something very interesting. :)
Am I weird for thinking the Atari 2600 version has some of the closet resembling character sprites, especially for the hardware? MSX was lacking color. SG-1000 looked silly And everything is self explanatory for the Euro home computer ports. Of course, it can't compare to the GBA, NES, and Saturn versions, but wow. If the Atari 2600 version was finished, I think would be an excellent port.
I own the NES and Game Boy versions, and have the original arcade version on both US and Japanese PS2 Taito compilations, along with having Elevator Action Returns on those compilations, along with the Saturn version. Imagine my surprise when I accidentally discovered the code to unlock the original game, the code was not online at the time. If memory serves me correctly, this is the same code that can be used in Bubble Symphony and Mizubaku Daibouken to unlock a secret cheat menu (except B is used at the end in Symphony, and A is used at the end of Liquid Kids, same exact code as Elevator Action Returns). This game and Liquid Kids has always been expensive (though I got a copy of EAR listed later in the night, for a mere $20 a decade or so ago), Bubble Symphony, $30 when I got it with help from a friend, is now ungodly expensive too.
I'll play this game on pretty much any platform. A simple premise that has that 'just one more go' thing going for it. Personally, my favourite port is for the GBA. Having the option to play a slightly improved version of the original as well as a slightly different flavoured take on the game is nice. As an aside, I've always wanted to see a Roguelike version of EA. A series of procedurally generated buildings along with more varied enemies and weapon upgrades would be great fun. :)
Apparently, the NES version was programmed by Micronics... And it was their first game they developed (but not released). I'm surprised the NES port is as good as it is
Never played the first game for more and a few minutes it looks ok but i wouldn't mine giving the second game Elevator action returns a go that looks pretty interesting.
@@RetroCore Yes it's an remake, and there's a campaign mode that can be played with 1-4 players and special DLC characters which can be obtained from the PS Store on the PS3 though you can also get more stages as DLC as well!
I was lucky enough to have tried every version except the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and the CPC. Even though the NES version has problems I still find it enjoyable to play. Same thing with the GBA it grew on me. I know Returns is a sequel but overall that's the best Elevator Action game to me and has some insane graphics for the time.
Mark Smith: The Game Boy Color version has pretty poor scrolling. Me: What are you talking about? It doesn't have any jerky scrolling, it works just fine.
Was the guy from the MSX port having a spaz while going down...? Also, this is one of my favorite ports on the NES. Great video, Mark! Mark was your name, aight? o:
I watched a few other videos of Elevator Action EX out of curiosity, and the action looked about as smooth in those as your footage of the GBO version. Could there have been some emulation issue causing the issue?
@@RetroCore Yeah, i just tested Elevator Action Ex on GBC on my Gameboy Advance (flash cart, so no emulation), and it runs much smoother. Think there must have been some emulation issues causing that particular slowdown for your captured footage. Which is surprising, given that it also runs full speed on GBC emulation on even the lowly powered Nintendo DS. Does start to lag a bit in a similar way to your footage trying to run GBC emulation on the GBA though....but I'd suspect you would possess a more capable emulation machine than one with an ARM7 16Mhz CPU 😃
@@lordmaximus780 "GBC emulation on the GBA" I'm not even remotely surprised this exists, but I still have that "what the hell" feeling going on, you know what I mean?
Btw, I just finished Ys 3 for Megadrive. Now I'll play the fan translation of Y4 and 5 at some point. Do you have any Ys3 "battle of the ports" video or any other Ys video? I love Action RPGs, I'm a huge Zelda fan, and Ys is my second favorite series. I know that there is a old series called Xak too. I played a PCE fan translation version of Xak III. Quite cool! But there is no translation of the rest of the series. What other Japanese Action RPG series/games similar to Ys/Zelda do you recommend? I played most likely all of them, but for sure there should be some very good obscures ones that I have no idea that they exist :) Thanks!
Sadly Battle of the Ports is a show that focuses on Arcade to home ports so there are no Ys videos. I have played Ys 1 to 5 with 3 being a favorite of mine. Theres the Falcom sets 1 and 2 for the Saturn which have some good games on but they never hit translated.
Thanks! I didn't know about the focus of the show, but yeah, looking at the videos it does make sense :) I'll try Ys 4 and 5. I know the Saturn port, but since I played Ys Book PC I think they are very similar.
Love this on arcade, I've recently enjoyed playing it during a friendly arcade competition and it became one of my favourites from the golden age. One suggestion, if I may. I guess it's a lot o extra work, but your non -English speaking audience miss those subtitles. Having British accent it's pretty easy to understand you, but sometimes I have to replay some parts, if possible would be great to have them back.
The subtitles are now part of the RU-vid settings. The can be seen on PC, home consoles like the Xbox or PS4 and even mobile devices :) to see the subtitles just switch on th "cc" option.
Rolling Thunder has been covered on Battle of the Ports a while back. If you look for "Battle of the Ports Rolling Thunder" in the RU-vid search bar it should come up as the top result. I would like to do Rolling Thunder 2 but as far as I'm aware it only ever got a Mega Drive port. Sadly that's not enough for a show to be made.
Any plans for doing a Battle of the Ports of Rockman (Mega Man)? I would like to see you thoughts of the PSX port on the show. (also known as "Rockman Complete Works")
I'm afraid a game needs to be from the arcades to feature on Battle of the Ports. I know there are some "fighting" Rockman games but not the platform style games for the Arcade. If there is I'd sure be happy to cover them. As for the regular games, we'll Rockman 8 and X4 are both better on the Saturn. Those versions have many more graphical effects. Of course most people don't even know Rockman was one Saturn as they never left Japan.
Do you mean a Battle of the Ports for Elevator Action Returns? I'd like to but there only one port and that on the Saturn. It's also the best way to play it. The PS2 emulated version has some issues.
I think you're game boy color emulator was responsible for the poor scrolling becuase I have that game on cartridge and scrolls at a lock 60fps at all times with the game slowing down when their's too much action on screen
I like the simple yet fun gameplay. The original is better than the sequel in my opinion. Sequel has better graphics, but loses the charm of the first one.
I wonder if it was another 4-6 week job when the original developer couldn't get it done in time. There's nothing at GTW64 about this version (although there is about an unpublished Datasoft version) so who knows...
The loading screens were often done by people completely unassociated with the project. Some people made a bit of a living just doing splash screens like that, such as SIR.
