So there was a bit of tension with last week's show of Soukyugurentail by a certain console's fan boys but I think all will be reversed in this week's show as we take a look at Raystorm.
Please note that the PS2 ans iOS versions are not featured because they are emulations ofthe arcade game.
Time Code
00:28 - Arcade
04:01 - PlayStation
06:46 - Windows
08:11 - Saturn
11:30 - Xbox 360
13:54 - All versions side by side
Enjoy!

PPl give crap to the Saturn about the transparencies but polygon warping was worse in my opinion.

Polygon warping was horrible. I'd rather have straight textures and no transparency any day.
@cosmoscoronado8862

Agreed, yet it's too bad there were so many half-assed Saturn port jobs in general. Considering the need to rework a lot of the modeling from triangles to quads, porting from PSX to Saturn has a lot more issues than a simple power discrepancy. I don't think this one was that bad, just not that good either.
@ciredecgellar8232

just play Saturn games with a composite cable, games have been optimized for that and no more transparency issues.

The PSX Era is when I knew that arcades were basically doomed in the USA. Why go to the arcade, when you can get a near identical experience at home? Then you'd get games like CyberSled, where you could get a better looking home port.

It is kind of sad :( but thankfully in this part of the world arcades were and still are popular places to hang out with friends and game.

Retro Core They're dead here. But some places like 1984 here in Springfield, MO. Keep the memory alive. It's an arcade adorned with all things 1980s. Everything but the pinball machines are set to freeplay and $7.50 gets you two floors of arcade gaming goodness of fun that lasts until closing time. One of my favorite atmospheric bits are the TVs, which play nothing but old movies and music videos. If you just wanna sit and rest, they have old computer magazines to thumb through. The kind that have complete games in basic code. Truly, it is heaven on Earth.

Love, love, love this game! The surreal atmosphere and amazing soundtrack just make this game feel magical to me. I really hope that Degica one day makes a proper port of the Ray trilgoy for the PC. I'd love to play those games with no polygon warping and a lovely 5.1 remix of the soundtrack. Those two 'fixes' and an online leader-board would be gaming heaven!

If you haven't been keeping up with recent happenings with the RAY series, there are some good news: The Ray'z Arcade Chronology, a collection of the original arcade versions of the entire RAY trilogy on PlayStation 4 and Switch that was handled by retro video game maestros at M2, is also coming to PC in Fall 2023. This collection also features swappable music soundtracks, HD versions of the latter two games, online leaderboards, and they give players the option of disabling the smart bomb attack combo of Shot + Laser buttons to prevent players from pulling one off in the middle of intense action for RayStorm and RayCrisis. The collection has already been hailed as a solid collection by shoot 'em up fans and hopefully that same momentum carries through with the PC port.

Fun video! One thing I feel worth mentioning is how the USA release of RayStorm, by Working Designs, artificially increased the difficulty from the original Japanese release. In fact, Working Designs locks you out of playing the full game if you try to set it to the "original" arcade difficulty, ending at stage 3. It's an infuriating change (why make a hard game even harder?), which was not present in the Japanese release of RayStorm on the PS1 (or the PS2 Taito port).
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 лет назад
Yeah, I know about how Working Designs mess about wit their releases. I'm not a fan of any of their work to be honest. In the RPGs they add horride voice acting, too much American street culture in an attempt to be cool and alter the way the game plays. They also changed the PSX version of Thunder Force V from what I remember.

@@RetroCoreidk what’s changed for Thunder Force V PS1 despite I did only played the Saturn version and NA TFV by working designs. aside from how the game looks I did notice like one change is players get I frames for bosses when transitioning to their next phase or starting to spawn, which means the player is only vulnerable once you can start attacking the boss. other than that idk the difference between the region release. Your PSX emulator is running the game on a higher resolution than the native. Only bitmaps are not affected by this, but polygons are smoother. The game looks so much better but it is not the original feeling for comparisons (my own opinion :-)

Raystorm clearly needed a more powerful arcade board to allow the game to shine! The Saturn port should be way better and the fact that the team didn't use the ram expansion cart is another questionable decision they made! I agree the HD version should have had a 4 by 3 option though honestly I would say it still looks the best though that PC version is not bad!
@johns6265

What they've done to the 360 version reminds me of my major objection to the supposedly perfect Amiga port of Rainbow Islands. The game is supposed to be 4:3 and the Amiga version slices off a vital chunk of vertical screen real estate, which presents problems since enemies that rapidly drop down become all too common but you can't see them before they dive bomb you on the Amiga version. When ports change aspect ratios or slice off pieces of screen real estate it drives me barmy, especially when it's hiding enemies and giving you less time to react.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 лет назад

did the PC Windows version make use of any 3D accelerators (the 3DFX or PowerVR cards for instance)? , one of the problems with modern PCs when it comes to these games is that they can't really run those proprietary APIs, meaning they have to be run in software mode. looking at the Saturn port, it seems things were ported without making much use of the Saturn's hardware, for instance the flat floors on many of the stages look polygonal just like the PS1 , as opposed to being mode7 style like many of the better Saturn games use (Saturn had that ability in hardware , unlike the PS/N64) the arcade boards based on console hardware are kind of a two edged sword imo , you get near perfect arcade home conversions which looks nice on the box , but on the other hand , it hurt one of the big draws of the arcade, which was going to play games which were not possible on home systems (without serious downgrades) , and it was a big reason why arcades died in the west sadly.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 лет назад
I'm not sure if the PC version uses any old style cards as the version I was using had no options at all apart from two resolution modes with the highest being 640x480.
@DanielMonteiroNit
@DanielMonteiroNit 8 лет назад
it didn't look much like any of early 3D APIs of the day. I would guess it runs in software - but that doesn't stop them from using some hardware acceleration for 2D drawing.

Is there a reason the Ps1 seems to have higher resolution than the arcade at the intro? I remember reading that taito gnet hardware used PCMCIA II cartridges a type of flash memory and is comparable to the capcom zn-2 which is based on the Playstation hardware and used dual sync monitor for standard and medium resolutions nut had more memory. hmmmmmmmmmm very interesting
@RetroCore

@StevenCusic

Have you tried setting the Xbox 360 system display setting to 480p and see if this forces the game to run in a correct 4:3 aspect ratio? The alternative is to use your HDTV's aspect ratio control and force the TV to display 720p/1080p in 4:3 aspect ratio. This corrects the stretching in Raystorm HD. As proof of concept, I watched the Xbox 360 portion of this video at stretch.site/ and forced 4:3 ratio on the video and the game looks perfect.

Setting the Xbox 360 to 4:3 is one option or changing the TV settings is another but the point is you shouldn't have to do this at all.

The Saturn version features fake checkerboard transparencies due to it's flawed dual graphics processor (VDP) design. In a nutshell, transparencies rendered by VDP1 don't affect objects rendered by VDP2 and viceversa (there's actually a long video here on youtube explaining in detail, search for "Sega Saturn Graphic In-depth Investigations (English/French subtitled)" It's not really the developers fault since implementing proper transparencies oon the Saturn is a real pain.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 лет назад
It can be done as some games do it. It just takes a lot of CPU time and needs programmers who know how to pull this off. There are a few Saturn games out there that do feature transparent polygons. Not many, but there are some. One that springs to mind is the early title, Welcome House. That has a transparent fish tank. Maight Hits, a light gun game does it in places too.
@mikecontra8844
@mikecontra8844 8 лет назад
It also shows in that video that it can be done, but also there are many ways to achieve this due to the Saturn's unique architecture. eg switching between transparent effect with background eating, then in the next frame displaying no transparent effect. The Sega Saturn doesn't have a flawed design, when used correctly it outshone the Playstation in many many areas.
@RetrOrigin
@RetrOrigin 8 лет назад
Mike Contra Never said it can't be done. I said it's a royal pain, which it is. There's a reason why almost all developers never bothered with the hassle of coding a ton of workarounds to get transparencies to work. It is a flawed design. the Saturn was originally supposed to be a 2D sprite based system only, then Sega realized late into development they needed to implement some sort of 3D accelerator but it was already too late to re-design the console from scratch so they instead decided patch a 3d accelerator as a 2nd graphics processor and ended up with the dual VDP design. Basically "using it correctly" involves far too much effort and development expenses.
@mikecontra8844
@mikecontra8844 8 лет назад
I never stated you said it can’t be done, if u disagree please provide a reference. How do you u know it’s a pain? Are u a software developer? I bet u never even wrote a line of code in your life. Which is why you rely on others opinions. Patch a 3D accelerator as a 2nd graphics processor? Wtf? You clearly have no knowledge of computing science what so ever. If you did u would know “patching” a DSP like the Saturn has in audio would actually be far more beneficial for 3D. Yup using the Saturn’s DSP would factually bring better 3D performance. Being that DSP’s are far better at floating point math than a 2nd SH2. If you’re a gifted software dev the Saturn is a gift indeed! If the Saturn is inferior to PS1 then compare Tekken 2 or 3 to virtua fighter 2. VF is absolutely superior. Show me any ps1 game better looking to Saturn Shenmue infact!
@RetrOrigin
@RetrOrigin 8 лет назад
You are taking the word patch completely out of context. Patching is a term commonly used when changes are made late into hardware development by adding/removing components because the process itself involves literally physically patching boards during prototype stages. It is a pain to properly program transparencies into Saturn games and the video reference I ported and most of the Saturn's library are more than enough proof. As impressive as a game like burning rangers is, it is a complete glitchfest thanks to what the developers had to do to get all the transparencies effects they wanted. Also, other than running at hi-res VF2 has nothing else going for it. They had to sacrifice light sourcing in order to hide the low polygon count and save processing power. Same goes for the Shenmue beta. Actually that goes for almost all the best 3D games on the Saturn, the majority have no light sourcing which makes everything look plain. BTW, I don't get why you are bringing the PS1 into this. The whole point of the original post was to talk about the Saturn's transparency capabilities, if you want to start some sort of stupid childish fanboy console war please look elsewhere.

Think the Saturn had some of the same problems as the as the PS3 in that both machines were harder to program, but more than capable even though, received some shoddy, half-arsed ports. First party games really shone, e.g. Virtua-Fighter 2, Sega Rally on the Saturn and Uncharted, God of War series on the PS3.

What's nice in the SSF emulator though is that you can enable "mesh translucent" which makes most meshed stuff true transparency and looks very nice. ***** yeah, that's true but the over all image was crap. I've always been an RGB user since the days of the Master System but I did experiment using composite on the Saturn for a while. wait ...in Rayforce, you destroy the Entire Earth after destroy Con-Human, killing yourself on the process. So maybe the Earth that show on the game is another planet...or i get the bad ending on Rayforce and screwd the shit up

You are absolutely right. I guess Taito forgot about that when making the second game. Although I think this could be a different planet.

A bit late, but RayStorm doesn't follow the story in RayForce - just the gameplay mechanics. An entirely different continuity. RayCrisis is a direct prequel to RayForce, where you hack into ConHuman to try and shut it down (obviously, it doesn't work!). RayStorm maintains the series predilection for downer endings/planetary annihilation, though!

+retro core I am very shocked to hear that you don't own a PS3, especially since you live in Japan!!!
@RetroCore

Because I'm hard core or at least that's what Japanese say when I tell them I own a Xbox One and 360. Telling them I own a PC Engine isn't sure a big deal :p it's the total opposite to the west. I do have a PS2 though.

Retro Core well considering the 360 and one both have some titles that would have been on PS3/4 right at the outset (shooting love, raiden iv and v, etc) that's not a bad thing to have, sure they get some flak in the states for whatever reason why but there are a handful of games on the systems that are worth their weight in gold
