Moving away from the traditional side scrolling platformer and in an even stranger move, bringing RPG elements to an arcade game, Westone's Wonder Boy in Monster Land was so popular it received many home ports. Let's check them out!
Time Code:
00:25 - Arcade
03:27 - Master System
06:19 - PC Engine
09:10 - Famicom
11:28 - Amiga
14:51 - Atari ST
17:41 - ZX Spectrum
20:46 - Commodore 64
24:09 - All versions
Enjoy!

Wonder Boy in Monsterland on arcade was the most amazing game I had ever seen at the time. When I later saw it for the C64 I had to buy it. I still have both the game and my C64.

I had the Master System version, which was released here as Monica no Castelo do Dragão (Monica in the Dragon's Castle,) with TecToy change for characters best known in Brazil. I amused myself with this game.

Yeah, the arcade original, SMS, and PCE ports had a labyrinth you had to correctly navigate (while time kept depleting between sections). Not sure if Saiyki World is the same, but I know for certain the ST and Amiga ports at least made it linear.

Dafuk, that moment when you knock at doors is quite priceless, why they removed it on PC Engine?! Anyway I also can't stand the characters change and same goes for Dynastic Hero on PC Engine CD where the hero wears a dumb-looking bettle suit (among others changes...). The Master System version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land is good from what I've played and I love the new music! (some sound effects also sound great)

The Amiga 500 conversion should have been arcade perfect - there is no excuse for such sloppy coding. BC Kid shows how a colourful platformer can run on the Amiga at 50fps with vibrant music and sound effects. The C64 version is actually pretty decent and in some ways I prefer the music over the arcade and also the more tactile feel against the bosses (such as in their recoil).
@mukankakuna
@mukankakuna 9 лет назад
It's very impressive how close to the original is the PC Engine port. I think they might use the same code of the arcade with just a few minor changes. A pity that it lacks some sprites and other features from the arcade. Even so, it's the best port and they even fixed the bug regarding the coins.

Natural result of not having a Z80, I feel. Too often, the CPC and MSX got ZX Spectrum ports in color. Because of the different processor, that short cut wasn't available for the C64.

@ChristopherSobieniak

The reason for the changes in "Bikkuriman World" was due to the ownership of the Wonder Boy characters belonging to Sega, but Westone still had rights to the game itself, hence why Hudson Soft went with a different IP to promote, as well as giving us "Master Higgins" in Adventure Island.
@RetroCore

This is actually one of the Amiga games I enjoyed. Naturally the loading times really damaged the game. A later hacked version to work on A1200 actually worked like a charm on this department - and made it slightly more enjoyable. After knowing the arcade original it seems to me that the Amiga could deliver more. Again an ST port, but still a good one. My 1st version was the ZX one, and actually I liked it back then - I never had played the arcade game. My friend bought the C64, unfortunately never could make it work - traded for Power Drift (great game on C64!). The PC engine is so weird and the NES... well are you sure it's even a remote inspiration port of wonderboy????
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 9 лет назад
+Hard Wired The Famicom game is the same game. The reason for the style change is the same reson why the PC Enging game had it's characters changed. Sega own the rights to the Wonderboy name and character. Hudson have the rights to the game but not the character. They can use the same game but just change the characters. Jaleco own no rights at all so they changed everything but still used the level designs for the most part.

So far I have the Arcade, VHD (Works with MSX computers), Saturn, PlayStation, Mega CD (Best audio out of all versions) and SFC / SNES versions. They are all the same apart from the Mega CD thanks to the remade audio by Wolf Team so I guess those ports would be judged upon how complete they are and the graphical overlays. The ISO graphical overlay is crap. Looks like a nasty bit of microsoft paint art. The Mega Cd version is missing any crash animations.

The supposed to be a cd32 version is actually a hacked version on floppy disk modified by Earok available here : earok.net/game/wonderboy-monster-land-se Using WHDLoad, the game can be installed to hdd and then put on CD to be played on CD32. Here are the improvements: - Palette tweaks, closer to the arcade original - Press down to enter doors (you no longer need a keyboard to play). - Press down to look down in certain areas. - Optionally, second button can be used to jump. Additionally, you can boot your Amiga with NTSC display so the game is faster, smoother, controls are more reactive and on CRT with NTSC display, the picture is wider, with more respect of the original ratio. Well, use this "Special Edition" using NTSC display and you got a version that correct all the original flaws !

This is one of my favorite arcade games ever your right the master system version is top notch but i would say the pc engine version is the best one, i know it had the sprite changes but apart from that its pretty much arcade perfect with only one problem because its all in Japanese when you get to the sphinx you cant answer his questions so you have to fight him and he is really tough most times its a game over. Well if you have a everdrive or your emulating the pc engine game you can play the translated version and job done, so yes the master system and pc engine versions are far better than all the rest and i would recommend and own both of them and great video by the way.

I agree, the PC Engine version is the best but I think the Master System version just wins it for me because I grew up with that version plus I'm not too keen on Bikuriman :)

There is a fan-translated version of Bikkuriman World out there if you don't mind roms.

+Retro Core You should do a thing on not arcade ports but PC ones. i find it would be cool to see Minecraft ports. Because I find ALL OF THE VERSIONS ARE DIFFERENT! Like from controls, visuals, and gameplay. PC original simply keyboard and mouse then other versions.

+Quinn The Quartz The biggest problem with doing PC stuff is I need a better PC and I really can't be arsed with messing about with driver and system set ups. I just don't have the time. Then we also have all the different graphic card veriations of games :( Too much work for the limited time I have I'm afraid.

I think you should show the MS version without FM (better without for me). The arcade version has almost similar sound than MS because sharing the same sound chip.

1. Arcade 2. Master System 3. Amiga 4. Atari ST 5. PC Engine 6. C64 7. Famicom 8. ZX Spectrum The Amiga version have the best music , which adds a great atmosphere to the game . It's a bit slower then the Atari version, but still well playable . I played this game on Amiga ! It's a great game ! Atari audio is only 3 channels ( with a lot reverb here ) . The music played on this 3 channels , but when a sfx plays , the music loses a channel which is very annoying . Amiga audio is 4 channels . The music played also on 3 channels and the sfx have a unic channel . When a sfx plays , the music still have 3 channels . The Amiga plays tracker music with digitized sound samples and the sfx is also digitized sample . I'm not sure about the Atari's music , but I think it's FM synthesis . The Famicom version is awful but the Spectrum version is the worst because the character graphics and the minimal beep sounds .

Retro Core Not to worry, it's pretty close to the Spectrum version. Did you use WinAPE to play it?

+Larry Bundy Jr I did but it wasn't having any of it. Tried 4 different images too. Another CPC emulator was recommended to me which I'll be using in the future when I have emulation issues.

Retro Core Did you try any different ROMS of it too? Places like Emuparadise usually carry 2-3 variants of each rom.

+Larry Bundy Jr yep. When I make these shows I always get a few versions of each ROM when not using real hardware. Emu paradise is just one of the places I use. The next show will use real hardware for each game. The next Battle of the Ports will be released early Saturday morning UK time or lunch time for me :)
