The long awaited Battle of the Underlevers. In this video we pit the Air Arm TX300, the Weihrauch HW97K and the Walther LGU. It was a windy day out there and I owe it to these rifles to attempt this again on a calmer day.
Agreed. I'm hoping to do a rematch. Next time I want to devote a shooting session to one rifle and then shoot a group on camera, and then do the same with the next rifl5on another day etc... This way the element of me having to adjust my shooting technique from one rifle to the next is eliminated. I think that it'll improve my groups as well as giving each rifle my full attention. Thanks for watching, my friend.
Hi Kevin your channel is the best without dout far superior to anyone's else air gun channel out there your the David Attenborough of the air guns review channel.
Thanks for a great video Kevin, almost 100 comments 😁 You're one of the few telling the right thing about the HW97 that it has no anti bear trap system. The most "big" guys doing reviews just tell what the others do and have no clue what this system is and how it works. The HW97 will always be my no1. With both my HW97 and HW77 i,m easy capable to shoot one centimeter groups on 30 yards. In fact with all my HW springers.... Cheers my friend!
Very enjoyable as usual. Love my Walther LGV but with a scope fitted, the weight!!! ok for the bench but body-building when hunting. (Thinking of attaching a couple of helium balloons when shooting off-hand 8-) Look forward to your next session.
Love the Balloon idea.🤣🤣😂 Yeah, for hunting I'd lean toward a HW50S OR a HW95. Another excellent, more affordable option is the Cometa 400 USC in gas ram. A little lacking on the trigger compared to a Weihrauch, but still an ideal hunter.
Awesome Video Kev, I always seem to just relax and sit back and really enjoy your content. I especially enjoyed the birds singing in the background of this one and I'm really deaf from the powder boomers - Weatherbys mainly infact. My love affair began on my wedding day nearly 3 decades ago when my wife presented me one in .177 flavour. My 97k was then sent off to Venom where the late "Popemeister" worked his magic. Later installed a GNib stock. Thousands of shots later I lost her to a fire. One thing I would like to point out Kev - Hold sensitivity in springers - underlever and break barrels. Your groups astound me with the unsuported front end shots you take, however, I do believe a lot of your fliers and group sizes are in-part due to this. Fantastic content, perfect outdoor location and fabulous narration. Love the music too. Happy and safe shooting bud.
It's really nice to get such positive feedback, Keith. It's truly appreciated. Yes, I know that springers have a reputation for being inaccurate with a simple bag rest, and I do believe that it's true for some guns. I have a few that just won't shoot well for me and I suspect that the bag is the issue. Thanks as always, my friend.
Three great looking underlevers in this vid! Rifle weight has always been a concern of mine as well, but I’ve decided I must have either the HW97k or the TX200hc one day. Your underlever collection is really astounding and always makes me want one so badly. I’d love to see a vid like this with the BSA underlever rifles you have one day. Those were some unique looking rifles, to me at least. The HW97 may have taken third this round, but it definitely had the highlight of the video. The no look ring the bell shot!
Ed's right. A heavy springer tends to be more forgiving. I do need to do some shooting with the Airsporter Stutzens, I believe that those are the ones that you're referring to. The Airsporter was a BSA classic. The Stutzen version was dressed in a full length (Stutzen) style stock design. It truly is a beautiful rifle. I did rework the RB2, but if I remember correctly, I never opened up the Mk1. It might be fun to toss a scope on each and see what they're all about. Stay tuned. Thanks as always, my friend.
@@edwardmiles3921 I’m guessing you just get used to the weight the more you shoot. I’m definitely going to purchase one in the future. I’m just not sure which one right now and when exactly, but either one seems to be a dream rifle for me at the moment.
@@razor1962 Yes, I had to rewatch your underlever collection video, but it was the Airsporter Stutzens. Man, what beautiful and unique looking rifles. You have an amazing and large collection, but hopefully you get to those in the future.
He's my little buddy, that one. I don't usually get very attached to cats, but Cheeto is the most affectionate and friendly cat that anyone could ask for. I just adore that cat. Thanks for watching, Scott.
😂That "hip shot" on the bell...nailed it!! Kia kaha Kevin...have my heart set on a .22 Air Arms Pro sport 🥰(Would love ANY of those units shown...but Im only allowed a couple of air rifles lol)
Great Video as always. I've had both the HW 97 and the AA TX200 HC both in .177 flavor - great rifles, but my 97 had the edge in accuracy. Keep up the great work.
The LGU is still on my wish list, with the TX200 and HW97, I'd have to say the TX has it on looks and build quality, but the 97 just outshoots it on accuracy, not by much though, both such great rifles, I tend to clean and gaze at my TX more than I shoot it, it is just stunning to look at🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ thanks for taking the time to share this, great shooting with the wind conditions too👍
Thanks, Peter. The LGU with a Rowan Engineering trigger upgrade is a wonderful setup. I hope that you're able to get your hands on one. Always a pleasure, my friend.
Excellent video, your lucky enough to have 3 legends all at once. Nobody would be disappointed with either one of those guns, if you did the same video tomorrow you'll probably get different results and I would watch it again, thanks ATB from jules in UK. 😊😊
I'd absolutely end up with different results. I want to have a rematch, but this time I want to devote a shooting session and video segment on different days for each rifle. This way I won't have adjust from one rifle to the next all in one session. I think that it'll be much more indicative of each rifles' potential. Thanks for watching, my friend.
Been waiting for this comparesment, im not surpised about LGU shooting so well, have 2 of those puppies, (and the tx200, +HW97) in one i replaced the plastic for a metal triger the other one i bought from a FT shooter that has a match trigger, Also the whole cocking movement is extremely smooth on the LGU
I came home with my Saturday night BBQ happy meal (Spare ribs, chicken, mac&cheese, collard greens) and a frosty beverage. Sat down in front of RU-vid and saw your video of my 3 favorite under levers. I enjoyed this session while I put away my Happy Meal. I too thought the TX & HW would take 1st/2nd. But that is shooting for you 😄. And you definitely have 3 winners there overall. Cant go wrong with those 3. Would love to next see a shootout with my favorite three break barrels in the 15 ft-lb ish power level; 98, LGV & FWB Sport.
You've made it, I sat waiting for the usual 'How many shot's was that?' and it never came, you see even old dogs CAN learn new tricks. One comment I would make is that to me personally the background music is annoying (and loud) but great video as we've come to expect, and ringing the bell without looking - wow!
Thanks Dave. Every once in a while, even a blind squirrel finds a nut. I get the rare complaint about the music. Maybe once a year. I try to keep the volume level very low when I'm speaking. As a matter of fact, it's often times as low as my editing software will permit. I do however receive lots of compliments on what folks often refer to as the "vibe" of my content. I think that part of that "vibe" might be the music. I could be 100% wrong though, so take it for what it's worth. There's a video scheduled to be released a few weeks from now, where I bring up this very topic at the end of the video. I specifically ask my viewers to leave a comment to let me know if the music should stay or if it should go. That oughta' point me in the right direction. Thanks as always, my friend.
@@razor1962 One interesting point on this video Kevin is that the trigger (even though modified) you said was worst gave the best group, and the trigger you said the best the worst group. Point being do we worry too much about technicalities?
Great video I knew the outcome before I watched the video because I've had all three a venom tuned 97 a tuned tx200 and a tuned lgu and my walther was always the winner at 50 metres 5p groups if I was up to it on the day thank you again for a great video and keep making them.😊
It's so funny to hear you say that. I just had a short conversation with another viewer who felt exactly the same about the TX200. This tells me that the subject matter is going to generate some interesting back and forth. 😊 I'm planning on a rematch, but instead of doing it all in one day, I'll spread it out and take my time with each rifle until I refamiliarize myself with It's personality before I start the camera. That will help to make a more fair comparison. Thanks for watching, my friend.
Smashing end on 30 yard acorns with my .177 LGU is a simply pleasure for me. That was as close to a 'off the hip' bell ring shot I think you'll ever make with that 97 Kevin..🙂 It was a great loud ring with the LGU at the end though too...👍
Love my 97K ,mine is in.177 and has the same butt as yours with the under cutout ,ive only shot 30 pellets through it since new ,6 months old, but i treated my self to a AGT Vixen short in .177 so that gose hunting with me and i keep the 97K as a back up ,well done on the bell shot off the hip lol 😊
Always a fan and have been here since the beginning, you actually helped me shim and lube my Gamo Hunter 22. That being said, it's time to retire the 177, we're too old to load those tiny and inneffective pellets. Doesn't matter how flat the flight path is if all it does is leave a pin hole with no fpe. Wood stock break barrels = happiness. 😊
I agree about .177 being fiddly (I'm 71) but here in the UK where we have power restrictions they're still the best choice if you want to shoot over 50 yds. If like me you're a wood stock break barrel fan you'll have seen me say this before, my Cometa Fusion is at least equal to if not better than my 97, don't know if I'm lucky but it's a fact.
@@davidoldboy5425 absolutely agree with you on the power restrictions versus size. All of my airguns are spring or gas piston and 22 caliber which requires atleast 14fpe to be really accurate at 50yds. My beloved R9 puts out 17.5 fpe and is insanely accurate at 50yds, you can literally put 5 pellets through the same hole. My gen 2 Gamo magnum 22 puts out 29 fpe and though it's not quite as accurate as the Beeman, it has no problem going through 8 gauge steel with Hornet pellets. Strangely enough my 2nd most accurate break barrel is the Gamo Hunter 22, it's only 14 fpe but I put a lot of work into it.
I,too, shoot left handed and generally have to settle for a nicely shaped ambidextrous stock. Getting an actual left handed walnut stock is an unexpected joy, I'm sure
The three musketeers essentially shoot the same, but the TX is ahead today. The same thing happened to me with the pellets, but I didn't notice it in time and cleaned the barrel and fiddled with the optics. Hopefully Walther will bring out another LGU with an improved trigger...we'll see. Great competition!!!
Nice comparison Kev👍🏻 Ringing the bell from the bench👌🏻 I love the look of a TX but the bear trap puts me off so the 97 would be my choice. My only fixed barrel springer is a Diana 52 in .177 which I brought a long time ago and needs a refurb but I don’t like it enough to bother 🤣
If you think that the bear trap lever is a PIA, try it as a lefty. 🤣🤣🤣 I don't own any of the Diana sidelever, sliding breech rifles. I've repaired a few. That cocking rod that connects the lever to the sliding breech is a weak point. I've seen many failures, usually due to trying to close the lever forcefully without depressing the bear trap release lever. Thanks for watching, my friend.
Great video my friend , all 3 are excellant rifles. Them Aztek scopes are excellant I always wanted one but all seemed to buy something different and I shouldn't have cause I always spent more money on the scope I bought when I could have got the Aztek for like 500 dollars and had just as nice of a scope.
I tend to skimp on scopes. I'm always in search of affordable scopes the meet the requirements of a piston gun shooter. I love a good scope but I rarely invest in them. Thanks for watching John.
Hey Kevin, I love how you have such a gentle and calm way of explaining everything 😊 I love the Walther, I don't know what it is but the Air Arms just doesn't excite me..... almost like it's trying too hard to be pretty, I know, each to their own. Anyway, something we do at target rifle club, when doing average cards to get our score, we shoot 6 lots of cards, take the best 5 to get our average score, just wondering if you did 'kind of' this..... Shoot 6 pellets and take the best 5 shots, allows you 1 bad shot through wind or pulling? Just an idea.
And a good idea it is. I'll consider using it in future videos. Thanks for the suggestion as well as for your viewership, Mick. It's sincerely appreciated.
I have one as well. Mine is in .177. I wish it were a .22 It's a 20 ft/lb gun all day long and it hits right where you point it. Thanks for watching, my friend.
Hi Kevin, enjoyed your video as always, just goes to show you need to choose the right pellet for the rifle, I own a Tx200hc and a Weihrauch Hw97TK,they both like H&N FT Trophy's best. All Three Under Lever Rifles are Brilliant 😊
Great review Kevin, very nice shooting, i am also a lefthanded shooter, you do have to pay more for tx 2oo than the hw97 keep up the great channel 😊😊 from the uk ,
Yep, we lefties are a persecuted few, but somehow we prevail. It is a proven fact that the right side of your brain controls the left side of the body. Armed with this knowledge, it is completely reasonable to declare that we lefties are the only ones in our RIGHT minds... Thanks for watching, my friend.
Another awesome video to watch. I also have 3 underlevers, all in .177,tx200,pro sport and hw97. Looking forward for walther, btw, what is the difference between the lgu and lgv? All the best, kevin
High Brian. The LGU is an underlever rifle while the LGV is a break barrel with a manually operated latching system. Both guns are capable of incredible accuracy. Thanks as always, my friend.
I just ordered the other under-lever rifle Kevin, I have a Diana 48 in .22 cal, on the way to me. We'll see what pellet and weight this one will have an appetite for soon I've enjoyed this ';shoot off' and am please to see the results. What a shame that Walther has decided to discontinue this LGU.
Agreed, Reg. Sad to see the end of production of the LG guns. I have a 48 in .177 . That gun needs to be in .22 it's a hard hitting gun. I think that it would hold up well in a head to head with the others. Thanks as always, my friend.
I always buy a high end scope, to me the scope is just as important. Especially buying a high end PCP or SPRINGER if I'm gonna spend top dollar for the gun then I'm gonna put a real good scope on it. All the scopes I bought were 800 dollars and up to 1200 dollars, the only scope I have cheaper then that is a VECTOR VEYRON 3/12/44 and that was 200 dollars and it's not bad for the price.
Nope. Can't do it. I must confess that I skimp on glass. I'm constantly looking for a scope that'll do what I need it to along with having a few deal breaker features. Adjustable parallax down to at least 10 yards. Some sort of hashmarks on the reticle to aid in crosswind hold off and holdover. Thanks for watching, my friend.
@razor1962 that's the last thing I worry about buddy is 10 yards paralex because none of my shooting is close at all, I shoot 50 yards and above, I don't see no need to shoot close ranges because my guns especially my PCPs shoot 1 hole groups at 50 yards and higher so no need to waste my time with 25 yards and them ranges even my HW97KT I don't shoot at 25 yards it's to easy I like stretching all my shooting out farther. But everyone does different things. Even when posting or hunting it's hard and rare to get close to animals so if you get use to and good at longer ranges it gives you so many more chances for getting shots at animals because your not near them and when you do shoot at them they don't know where you are and most of the time don't even fly away.
I can do 60 yards. I've been thinking about featuring some long range testesig of some of the guns that have proven themselves to be exceptionally accurate. Thanks for watching, my friend.
I just can't get along with the TX stock, much prefer my 77 The TX is basically a clone tbh, of the Pope tuned 77/97's... surprised they didn't end up in court over the trigger. Must try a Pro Sport one day, beautiful thing
I couldn't agree more on that TX trigger. They ran all the way to the edge on that one, for sure. Fantastic rifle nevertheless. I've always been able to shoot my 97K the best out of the three, but as you saw in the video, the decision was a tough one but it was between the LGU and the TX200. I've got plans for a rematch where I'll be able to give each rifle a much more fair comparison. Thanks for watching, my friend.
RE: ProSport See if you can try a friends first, Dom. Just make sure you shoot it long enough to get on your nerves ! 😉 Lovely rifle, but mechanically not quite all it's cracked up to be ??? 🤷🏼♂️ The mid-lever design increases cocking effort and unfortunately the light aluminum cocking handle tends to twist and flex wallowing out the pivot bushings. 😕 Most of us favor our better rifles, but dancing on eggshells can really get tedious in the long run... 😣
@@razor1962 I did watch the video…. Well most of it, HW, LG don’t stand up to the TX, you can’t compare these guns accurately and comprehensively with just 5 shots each that’s ridiculous, I can tell you now my TX hits consistently 1” spinners at 70 yards no problem, the HW and LG struggle to keep up to that standard, at my club we put these guns through their paces and the TX reigns supreme on accuracy at distance, it just does. My TX is in .177 flavour using the JSB 8.44 4.52 heads, it’s an absolute laser. The TX group in your video was by far the tightest bar the flyer but that most definitely a rogue pellet or you, it definitely wasn’t the gun🤷♂️
@@AdamMcCool-01 There, now see, that's a worthwhile comment. A 5 shot group for the purpose of the video just seemed to be about right to keep the length of the video reasonable. Actually, I want to do the video again. Only this time, I want to devote plenty of time to each rifle getting in the zone with it and recording the video once both the rifle and I are warmed up. This way, I can shoot each rifle on different days instead of leaping from one gun to the next without time to relearn the guns personality. It should make for a much more fair comparison. Anyway, thanks for watching, my friend.
@@razor1962 thank god🙏🏼 I thought you were mad!🤣 but joking aside I think a fair and reasonable comparison would be 10 10 shot groups through each gun and stretching from 25 yards to at least 50 yards, I know that’s a big time commitment but I believe such a test would see you do the guns the justice they all deserve 👍🏻 I look forward to that video buddy👌🏼
Yeah, I'm not satisfied with the results. I wanna' do it again but next time, I want to shoot each rifle on separate days so that I'm not having to adjust from one gun to the next all in one session. It's not fair to the rifles. I need to warm up with each rifle before I start recording the video. That's really the only way to be fair. These rifles deserve that. Thanks as always, Marc.
That's gonna' depend heavily upon where on the planet that you're located. A Google search of "shooting ranges near me" may yield some useful results. Thanks for watching.
