It's a double whammy tonight, and it's ended on a relieving note - my first Battle Royale Distance win. About time. Tune in next Thursday for another juicy Geo Detective episode! Subscribe: / @geowizard
Tom: I'm going to just scatter loads of guesses. Also Tom: Guesses once as far south as you can get and then wastes 3/4 of his time going down to the end of a road in a housing estate.
New Haircut Tom is actually an evil clone who killed Robot Tom. Luckily, Future Tom has come to save the day and put New Haircut Tom in prison where he belongs. New Haircut Tom didn't even check he was recording once in this entire video, if that's not proof he's an evil clone I don't know what is...
Just a heads up if you aren't aware. In that last round, you had 10 guesses left. There's no harm in just spamming them down all over Britain when you have so many on the last round instead of moving along the road and trying desperately to pinpoint it when you're running out of time. It's almost a numbers game at that point.
Yeah and they both clearly knew it was the UK so start off the guessing somewhere central always when it's a 1v1 scenario. If still losing just go slightly more north or south until winning again.
Unless you want to get the upgrade points. The more guesses you have left at the end, the better your final score. But obviously Tom wasn't trying that here.
Tip for 10:10: Jerusalem municipal law requires all buildings to be covered with stone, so if the houses aren't stone it isn't Jerusalem. Also Jerusalem is hilly.
@@user-vb9sg7dc4t True, there is a small german speaking community, but it's way further east - and you probably get close even if you put the pin in western germany :D
10 guesses available in the last round and you knew the country almost instantly... my neighbors are probably wondering why I'm yelling "JUST GUESS!!!!"
I've never done this before, but this time I was screaming at my screen "ffs, Tom just click somewhere, anywhere, just KEEP GUESSING!!!". Also, round in Lithuania, that street name was the same as my name, so now I know how native English speakers pronounce my name haha.
Just as a tip for your question about rounds ending soon. Two things have to happen: -Everyone has made at least 1 guess -The person who's currently furthest away has no remaining guesses
This mode is so addictive, and the final rounds get so exciting too, lost to a guy by 80 meters in some village in Ukraine. Love to see Tom uploading more of distance battle :)
I get so triggered by the rounds where it's like Japan but no one has any idea where, everyone just litters the islands with guesses but doesn't get one anywhere close, and my guess just happens to be very slightly further away than everyone else's :D
Tom just a few prostrat tips: In the final 2 you need to look at how far away you are from the last person. So when he was 80 miles ahead of you moving up the road isn't effective, you probably want to move up at least 100 miles because if they have the right spot already you're probably fucked. In the semis you were playing a guy who only had one guess, so instead of guessing multiple times you only *really* needed one. You can also use the two numbers you received to base your guess on. You moved halfway up the country and your guess moved from 2.1miles ahead to 5.9 meaning the marker would be approximately in the middle of the two if you drew a perpendicular line between the two. If it really comes down to it you can use guess 3 to go right bang in the middle, 4 to go in one direction, and five to either go the opposite direction or the same direction if you improved
I hope he reads this and understands this. If he can better his game strategy and couple it with his geography knowledge, he would be damn hard to beat.
The combination of Tom's incredible geographical knowledge with hopeless gameplay is very tilting. In the final round he immediately realised it was Britain but didn't understand that just scattering guesses covering the country forces the opponent to be very close.
...but still fails to understand or properly utilize the clues the distances between players gives him (and how his guesses give clue to the other players). If the guess of the player closer than you is, say, 250 miles closer than yours, using another guess on any location closer than 250 miles to a previous guess, like he does at 6:55, 9:25 (the worst offender), 20:55 (and maybe 8:05), will never overtake that better player's guess. It might help to establish a direction (if one actually pays attention to the distances), but so does a guess further away that also at least has the chance to beat the other player.
For these Tom really needs to focus more on the miles between him and the other players. The distance says everything about what your next guess needs to be
Tbf, due to the strictness of German privacy laws, its really rare to get Germany in Geoguessr as there isn't much street view data for Germany. So unless you see a literal sign saying you are in Germany, don't guess Germany
I love "Kapten, the smug git" at the end. The guy literally guessed the middle of the UK which is a safe enough bet when it's 1v1. Go central and then if you are still losing go slightly more north or slightly more south.
@@krischezockt1916 your country is easy for me to recognize when I play because so many of the buildings are blurred out (because of privacy laws I think)
If you have the extra guesses you can use them to see how far you are from his best guess, then keep moving them around to beat him. Your guesses going east west werent getting closer so you should know to go north south with it.
I'm from Netanya, Israel.. finally got to see you go to this area. By the way, to that you're in Jerusalem - you'll find that the streets are a bit hilly rather that flat, and have some kind of older stone on the pavements. Tel Aviv area is always a good guess as it's very densely populated. Hilly with trees and you're in the north of Israel, desert-like surroundings and you're in the south. A good way to tell you're here in the middle of a road with nothing else around, is the orange stripe for the hard shoulder and usually a solid stripe on the left (at the time of the photographing, it has changed since). If you have a very long desert road with mountains in the distance (east), you're on route 90 along the border with Jordan. Route 40 hasn't been done yet so don't get confused. I'm a 25,000 pointer on Israel, discovered the game through you so Thanks!
This is far more entertaining than I thought it would be before I started watching! I love geography and have traveled quite a bit. I need to download this game.
I love how you've taken an initiative and started playing this with moving. Every other RU-vidr is doing the same old: Im not going to move or anything, and that's not the way this mode was intended to be played. You go on and show them who's the boss. As you progress through ranks, opponents will get tougher and this is why I prefer watching you to any other because you always know how to make videos fun and keep them original.
I was quite surprised at 12:56 when you read German while knowing German, thought it was Belgium and didn't go in the German speaking part of it, but oh well, we all make mistakes and you got the round
still so funny how even when he learns how to play properly, he still kinda doesn’t. “Plymouth” (you are 130 miles away from the guy who has guessed) “Okay then, Bournemouth”
Big houses surrounded a forest of eucalyptus trees, driving on the left. Doesn’t leave many options. Tbh i am Australian and could tell it was australia before the round had even started and you could only see the border
Awesome round! A tip for Buenos Aires: taxis are black with a yellow roof. That's distinctive and there were a few on sight. Plus "Caballito" is the name of a neighbourhood.
Small tip for the Israel guess, in Jerusalem all buildings must have a facade of limestone bricks (called Jerusalem stone) so if you see any buildings that do not have that facade you're most likely not in Jerusalem and vice-versa, if all buildings have that facade there's a good chance you're in Jerusalem. This is not completely fool proof because between 1945 and some time in the 60s the law was not enforced so there might still be a few buildings without the facade and there are also areas other than Jerusalem that have a lot of limestone buildings but in the vast majority of cases I think this should be correct.
I'm loving the new distance battle royale mode! i think the craziest thing that's happened to me in geoguessr ever is when me and one or two other people all managed to get a perfect round in a distance battle royale game in reykjavik.
it's not about scattering guesses, its about using the guesses like a metal detector and use the distance to the person in front to pinpoint the exact location, besides that amazing job once again Tom
Small world and all that - I’ve driven over that exact junction in Poland on my way to stay at Szczecinek (‘Stretchy Neck’ as I call it). We work with a farm called Juchowo Farm just outside Stretchy Neck - Have been there several times. Not much in Stretchy Neck but it’s on a lake. Good spot for a meal and a few beers in the summer. There’s also a bit of WW2 history, including a big old bunker and T34 tank as you drive into town.
12:56 This 'Anhänger' could have told you everything you need to know. 'Anhänger Vermietung' is clearly German. It gives you a phone number. 0201 points to a region in Northrhine-Westphalia. Most precisely Essen, Germany. You definitely need to learn some regional codes. You miss them so often, they are never blurred. Not only german ones.
One thing they should change is the small countdown timer between guesses. Tom very well could have won the last round if it would have let him guess faster
theres so much easy stuff you could do to win these not even via the map, but by looking at the information the game gives you on the distance. like one that didnt matter where you changed your position significantly but the distance didnt change much, so its immediately obvious that you moved the guess in a radius around the actual location. or when you guess south england and the other dude is some 80 kilometers closer to the actual location.
Tom will dominate in the no panning or zooming. Most people try to find more clues than Tom, but Tom usually gets the country before he looks for clues. I don't know why he thinks he'll be worse at that.
It seems like the biggest improvement Tom could implement is to look at how far he is behind after a guess and move atleast that far for his next guess. if he is 130miles behind the lead it means the spot is more than 130 miles away. If he reads that and uses it to his advantage id assume he gets more consistent guesses. and therefore probably a few wins ;P
