Battlefield 1 - Flame War 

As someone who has an interest in WWI...well this to me is like Ryse was to Jon

*Battle begins "I'm in heavy armor, so I'm gonna press the attack." *Several seconds later "I'm gonna pull back a bit and snipe with my heavy machine gun."

The stick grenade is a grenade with a handle, it's a German design. The design makes carrying and throwing a bit easier, and they don't roll as much unlike a regular grenade. It is not a sticky grenade.

Somebody suggested for Jon to play the Metro 2033 series. I think that is a great idea! So, give it a thought if you like.

WW1 wasn't entirely trench warfare. The guys that made this game pointed this out and intentionally made it not just a bunch of trenches.

I love how Jon rushes ahead of his squad, into the middle of the enemy defenses, not supporting their attack at all while trying to find a “clever” way in and then asks why THEY didn’t support HIM. You’re a brilliant guy, Jon, but sometimes the obvious eludes you.

Anyone else start crying when he thought a stick grenade stuck to things? It's a German hand grenade AKA the Stielhandgranate. Who let a carton of eggs go to war?

Also while the game has a lot of inaccuracies, during 1918 (the first chapter) the war started to become much more mobile.

There is a British war story. I think it's the first one after the prologue. It's really quite good. The Lawrence of Arabia story is good too.

Spades make excellent weapons. If you sharpen the edge (and they usually did) it becomes an ax.

Jon, if you want a more realistic World War I game, play Verdun. That one’s all about the trenches.

I've watched you playing games for 3+ years but honestly there's some videos where I come out thinking "I wouldn't be surprised if Jon had never played a game before"

The trench warfare was actually just on one front, Russia, arabia, some weird Asian islands were all moving wars, and even on the French front were a lot of pushes. They didn’t lead to anything, but the opening is less rare than Jon says it is.

It's obvious Jon, the Aussie has regenerating health because he was born in Australia, and therefore is in a much nicer, less spider/heat/jellyfish/death filled environment! Obviously!

Emotional impact, not something you getting in shooty-whizz-bang games too often. This campaign has its moments though.

fun fact about winston churchill, not only did he fuck over the anzacs at gallipoli (and he knew it - afterwards), but when aussies were holding out at tobruk (the aussie 'desert rats') japanese starting threatening australian mainland, and PM Curtin told Churchill to relieve aussies so he could pull them back and defend australia with vet troops. Churchill refused, believing in the Empire, and that australia served britain, Curtain said they were pulling out to australia and if churchill didn't relieve the city would be handed over to the axis, which churchill considered treasonous. so basically, aussies who study history don't like churchill nearly as much as the rest of the world does...

Jon. The developers have in fairness put a lot of research into the weapons and tech they had in ww1. A lot of it was just experimental stuff that never saw battle but most stuff like the battle armour did actually get used

well a lesser known fact is we austrians in the K and K times invented buildings thet could span an near infinet amount of people thet nearly won us the war. then the antand finaly figured out to just nail thouse buildings shut.... brilliant XD

...Has...Has Jon ever played a triple A shooter before? Because it doesn't bloody look like it.

This isn't very historically accurate but I can tell you what is... Skyrim: make your own world write your own history that's how to make it historically accurate!

Honestly I like to imagine Avanti Savoia is just mostly indeed an embellishment made by the dad to his daugther Like if you have a choice between "Oh my brother and I were part of an Italian offensive as the elite Arditi stormtroops" and "Oh my brother and i were part of an Italian offensive as the elite Arditi stormtroops where I was clad in full armor with a giant gun and I singlehandedly cleared trenches and took on an entire Austro-Hungarian air squadron" I'm sure you'll pick the latter

I love how jon just spends a stupid amount of time figuring that maybe one of the two weapon buttons does something with dynamite. At first he expected a massive gun to magically explode because he activated the primer.

Dude I love I how the first games I played we're FO3 and BFBC2 and I started watching RU-vid by you playing fallout: NV and now you're finally playing BF, crazy full circle, Jon.

I gave up watching 10 mins in after realising This isn't the type of game that i enjoy watching from this type of RU-vidr.

They did use armor like that in the war but it was not as good as it is in game, and they would not be able to hold a gun like that but it is like this for gameplay reasons.

I almost felt like Jon wasn't very trilled with this game's historic accuracy...

I was really disappointed in the fact there was not equal representation in the campaign. It was the valiant British, Australians, Italians, and Americans V.S the Germans. Aside from the intro they didn't even attempt to humanize the people you were killing. I was expecting something more like events depicted in "Poilu" by Louis Barthas, and less "mainstream WW2 games".

heavily agree with your opening statement, WW1 doesn't lend itself to a game easily at all unless it's about the horrors of war like Valiant Hearts or something

Yes the italians actually did have ironmen except they did not have machine guns they fought with knives and grenades

You’ve no idea how long I struggled taking down those planes.

I think people tend to forget this is a human, not just a RU-vidr and he wanted to play a game and thought, "Hm, might as well share it with my audience." Jon doesn't play these types of games for views or subs for obvious reasons. It's just the fact of: Jon's a historian and a gamer and this was a huge release. So to dislike or to disagree with the game choice is a bit selfish considering it's one video out of the many he posts a week. Personally, I don't come for the gameplay, but Jon's wit, hilarity, lack of vulgarity that when he uses such words they have weight, and lack of perception. All summed up: Jon's personality is what makes the video and you can tell when he is out of place. This is a fantastic channel regardless of the game. He makes it entertaining which is not an easy find.

Awesome gameplay Jon! Best singleplayer ever I would say. It turns out they didn't have to send thousands to there death, just send in one iron man-boi with a big gun and it will all sort it self out.

Jon, do a google image search of ' WW1 body armour'. It's absolutely astonishing to look at and demonstrates quite nicely how bizarre the clash between 19th century warfare and the horrific weapons of the 20th century must have been. ;)

Maybe Jon should've read about the Harlem Hellfighters and the American pilots who joined the French Air Force before 1917. Not all war games, especially this one, is about the Americans.

Yes Jon including Gallipoli is only in the game to be a dday ripoff because every naval invasion the has high casualties is a dday ripoff. You know not because it was a significant battle or anything.

The planes set off the avalanche to kill more soldiers then their own guns, not that they were scared of it.

You could do Verdun for the moody, grim trench warfare or that game where you fight vampires in a WW1 setting. That would be lovely.

The entire playthrough consists of Jon being told by the game what to do, finally figuring out what to do, then complaining the game hadn't told him what to do even though it had for the entire time, and Jon constantly not doing what he is supposed to, then complaining the game is acting weird.

Jon there's actually only one campaign with an American and he ends up being arrested and sent back to Britain to stand trial for the theft of a plane and impersonating a British officer. The rest of the campaigns are Italian, British, Arabian, and Australian. The only strictly American one was the opening with the harlem hellfighters, a regiment that was entirely african-american.

Next up (hopefully); the other side of the WW1 game spectrum; a little game called "Verdun"

my opinion on this game is that it is a fun multiplayer shooter where history means nothing and the campaign is token at best so really its a battlefield game my second favorite one in fact

I feel like Jon made this to appease the EA backlashers from the Battlefront 2 by dissing this game but now others are mad at him constantly criticizing it. Haha. Poor Jon can never win.

Guys if you play Battlefield games for the single player stories, you won’t have a great time(except the Bad Company games). The Battlefield games are focused on the multiplayer, although I understand your concerns.

Try Verdun, it is also a world war 1 game...but more historically accurate than this

If you are looking for fast paced fun play battlefield if your looking for historical accuracy play Verdun both are good and fun games about the same conflict but about different parts of it and as a result play completely differently

At least the Gallipoli campaign is seemingly accurate enough however it wasn't australians it was the anzacs (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) It's important to recognize the sacrifices New Zealand made as well
