This talk, which was delivered 'live' to an online audience by Fraser Skirrow looks at the development of training, tactics, weapons and organisation. Told through the experiences of a West Yorkshire battalion, it focuses on how new weapons and techniques were applied by the infantry on the battlefield.
The story illustrates the growth of all arms co-operation, the use of tanks, aircraft and artillery to support the infantry. The talk steps the audience through four very different battles at the level of companies and platoons to show changes in how battles were actually fought.
We hope to host more 'live' webinars. If you would like to take part in these, please do consider joining The Western Front Association.

This was fantastic. The detailed examination of the ground and tactics is most appreciated with excellent analysis and presentation. I hope that others can take this approach and look at other tactical evolutions through the lens of a specific unit in the future. Most meaningful and in great contrast to "bigger" histories... Thank you.

From the books I've read on WWI, I'd personally say the British/British empire forces ended the war the supreme fighting force- captured 50% 0f all German POWs, 40% of all German audience captured, broke the Hindenburg line and was still making massive inroads into German territory up until the armistice. One French guy said we were just minor players- I don't think I'll ever read another French history book, when a group of nations lost over one million men protecting French and Belgium territory.

The War Diaries of the 8th Black Watch (the senior New Army battalion) have numerous references to periods of training when they are out of the lines. Also, the descriptions of the various actions have enough detail to be able to understand that tactics are evolving as the war goes on. I also read somewhere that there was an Army printing department that was churning out tons of documents on a monthly (if not weekly) basis. BTW, big fan (and subscriber) of your channel. How long did it take to acquire all of the uniforms, weapons and accoutrements that you so brilliantly present?

Very interesting, thanks. The retention of a cadre of officers (and men?) in reserve when a unit went "over the top" existed at least as early as the Battle of Loos (25 - 27 September 1915). The History of The Black Watch in the Great War (Wauchope) notes on page 13 of the section on the 8th Battalion "Several officers who had been left out of the action on the first day... came up from the transport lines to join the few who had survived the battle." This was on the 26th when the remnants of the battalion were in reserve for 26th Infantry Brigade, having assaulted the Hohenzollern Redoubt on the 25th. Further, on page 24, when describing the attack on Longueval (14 - 19 July 1916) it is stated "the 8th suffered heavily, and by the evening of the 17th it was so weak that eight reserve officers and all available non-commissioned officers and men were sent up from the transport lines to reinforce the Battalion."

` Splendid reading of the ground by both the Yorks and Mr. Skirrow, worthy of the nation and army of Wellington (Re: his deployments at the rolling French countryside near Waterloo). 50:50 & 1:26:00-- it seems that those two salient complaints of medical corps falling behind coincide with the two battles which occured in the context of a rapid advance. Perhaps a contrast could be made with the use of air-mobile field hospitals by the UN in Korea? I'd love to see an examination of the particular matter (field medical units trying to keep up with combat forces, not easy considering the roads) from any angle. "Mademoiselle of Almetiers"? I love it!

This was excellent, especially the illustrations that are easily the most informative I've seen, many other presenters could learn a lot from them.

Thanks! It looks like there was a problem recognizing when an attack should not go ahead. E.g. Missing support.

There was a recognition that this was not going to go well but as an entire French army was due to attack on a wide front at the same time the difficulties of a couple of Brigades, even if higher command had known about them, would probably not have altered the timing of the attack. The analysis at the time is scathing about attempting to advance down a valley where the enemy holds the high ground on the sides and the barrage is poor. Interestingly the German had artillery problems that day and were hit by their own guns!

Until your analysis of this capable Battalion's experience; deprived of the means to operate & defend itself effectively I never really understood Wilfred Owen's phrase "the pity of War". Very much appreciate the comment concerning the whole context vs a vs the French attack.
