I know that the battleship is outdated these days but their is just something about them. They will never lose intimidation or badass status it is my favorite war ship
Just remember, several of the Iowa-Classes are Inactive Reserve status. That means if needed, they can be recalled to do what they do best - unleash hell upon their enemies. This fact was taken into account in the novel as to why the Mo had fuel and ammo ready to go.
DEATH CHARGE I’m sure if a state of national emergency there’s some provisioning somewhere in the defense acts that will allow the Navy to reclaim these ships and modernize them more than their previous 90s update.
@@Viper72 Maybe not too modernized. With all the news reports of various countries modenizing their forces, a ship whose primary ordinance can't be jammed would be worth a lot. Imagine: "Sir, We have jammed the Americans fire control systems for their missiles and they are coming into 25 km range!" "Idiot, Iowa classes' main guns are Analog!!" "Oh..." *BOOM!!*
Alien ship: we sunken the others what do you have. USS Missouri: the biggest Middle fingers you have ever seen "Update- So i visited My uncle Ship the USS New Jersey sister of the Missouri so during the tour they ask if people seen this movie when they show you the anchor as you can guess the drifting part can't be done apparently this was a common question so the tour guy explained it without anyone asking also thanks for the likes i wasn't suspecting almost 2K when i commented 3 year's ago"
9 16 inch guns which have the power of the 18.1 inch guns of the Yamato due to the longer barrel allowing for more speed on the later 2 Iowa class ships shells when exiting the barrel
Battleships were amazing. Nothing short of amazing. For a few decades they were what it was all about - the whole story. It was just the development of aircraft that changed the economics - it became possible for a cheap airplane with a torpedo to sink a huge expensive capital battleship. So emphasis shifted to carriers and carrier groups, that could maintain their own in-the-air protection shield. But anyway, for those few decades battleships were just things of beauty.
well it is battleship also seems the aliens spent al ltheir easearch budget on gettint thru space rather than any sort of weaponry caus grenades isnt exactly effiecent
*Me before this movie:* "I'm not that much into battleships, they're old and slow..." *Me after this movie:* _"Missouri's main battery consisted of nine 406 mm/50 cal Mark 7 guns, which could fire 1,200 kg armor-piercing shells some 32.2 km. Her secondary battery consisted of twenty 5 in 38 cal guns in twin turrets, with a range of about 16 km. With the advent of air power and the need to gain and maintain air superiority came a need to protect the growing fleet of allied aircraft carriers; to this end, Missouri was fitted with an array of Oerlikon 20 mm and Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft guns to defend allied carriers from enemy airstrikes. When reactivated in 1984 Missouri had her 20 mm and 40 mm AA guns removed, and was outfitted with Phalanx CIWS mounts for protection against enemy missiles and aircraft, and Armored Box Launchers and Quad Cell Launchers designed to fire Tomahawk missiles and Harpoon missiles, respectively. Missouri and her sister ship Wisconsin were fitted with thicker traverse bulkhead armor, 368 mm, compared to 287 mm in the first two ships of her class, the Iowa and New Jersey."_
My uncle who spent years in the navy actually liked this movie better than he originally expected to. The part where the shell blows up on the hill with the signal equipment, my uncle said that the explosion size was completely accurate.
Edgar Baltazar he only replied, “classified until further notice.” But he served near the end of the Cold War, and gave me a AKM type 2 bayonet with matching serial numbers as a late birthday gift when I was 24.
Imagine if Thanos faced the Missouri. He could rewind time all he wants, but he'd have to travel so far just to get to the ship. Even then it would be super hard to find it.
Well, most sailors consider their ships like ladies, and treat them with the same respect a lady deserves. Its why you never hear them regard their ships as "He"
ItzWitherPlayz Let alone that any aliens capable of reaching us would necessarily have interstellar travel technology....the closest star to is is 44 lightyears away. To give you an idea with human technology it would take 1800 years to reach it at the highest speed ever achieved by mankind (28.600 km/h in the Moon-swing by Apollo 8). To be able to reasonably travel, even with a huge war machine!, the aliens would need a technology that is at least 500-1000 years ahead of our...this means that a military confrontation would be like a battalion of modern marines facing the army of king George II equipped with some tin armor, swords and bows.
Exactly! It cracks me up when people complain about how the turrets wouldn’t rotate that fast, the guns wouldn’t fire that fast, The ship wouldn’t tip to the side, blah blah blah. What was their first clue that this movie wasn’t going to be realistic? If they got all that stuff wrong in the movie Das boot, then I could understand. This is just a fun movie!
@G E T R E K T the Stalingrad class battle cruiser will fall in a battle with an Iowa class battleship. Here are some statistics that’ll show why buddy: Stalingrad class: Waterline belt armor: (7.1 in) Armaments: 3 x triple (12.0 in) guns; 6 x twin (5.1 in) guns; Iowa class(Missouri): Waterline belt armor: 14.5 inches Armaments: 3 x triple (16.0 in) guns; 10 x twin (5.0 in) guns Your bullshit ruski boat will fall below the waterline in minutes 🖕🖕💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
these sailors had plot armor. uss missouri would be destroyed by Regent mothership (garrnoian aircraft carrier with armed of pegs launchers there was missiles and Torpedos but dosen't work on earth.)
aliens go like in the 2. -every ship starts to drift- weeb alien : Nani?! kansei dorifto?!? other aliens: what is kansei dorifto? weeb alien: it was nice to knowing you guys other aliens: WHAT ARE YOU TALKI- *Huge Explosion*
Son, fun fact. There was suppose to be a 2nd movie but it was scraped because box off sells were so bad, though they did decently in DvD and Blu-ray sells. During the credits there is a scene were some kids and a farmer in the UK find an Allen escape pode thing, which was there way of leading up to a second movie
@@ryanwindham634 ik there was going to be a second movie, they should have still made it they could have done it through multiple channels hulu Netflix prime
What he said: "they ain't gonna sink this battle ship no way" What I heard: "This monster has been through multiple wars and has lived to tell the tale...you think you have what it takes to bring her down? Not likely"
Missouri: 'Alright, that hurt. I'll admit. But you been beating up my little sisters all damn day and now I think its time i show you HOW WE DID SHIT WHERE I COME FROM!!!' *BOOOOOOM*
Every time I hear the sound of those cannons firing brings up a chill down my spine imagining how these things destroyed and fought each other in WW2. Those men deserved every bit of rest they got.
Honestly one of my favorite movies. It’s my guilty pleasure and I don’t care what anyone else says. Love the casting choices, the setting, the plot, the score….it’s all great.
I know most of that was probably CGI but imagin if you will, the actual USS Missouri being put to sea one more time for this scene, just to let her cannons roar. Not gonna lie, "they don't make 'em like they used to". Beautiful beautiful battleship. I ain't patriotic, but this makes me proud to be American...ish. *Edit* I turned on the bass booster on my surround sound subwoofer when the main cannons fired and it shook my whole living room. Damn, that scene, 4:19, a thing of beauty.
Not just don't... *can't*. I was at the public auction when Great Lakes Naval Station cleared out their old machine tools including the lathes and rifling machines for the big guns. You don't turn those on a dinky little Mazak. We no longer have the tools to make the tools that made the parts. Nor anyone to train a new generation how to run them. What couldn't be exported got cut up for scrap. Most of the rest got bought by Chinese companies for little more than scrap price.
Unfortunately the age of the airplane had rendered battleships obsolete. When in normal ship vs. ship combat, those massive battlewagons are almost unstoppable,... but throw bomber aircraft and submarines into the mix, and you end up with a big floating target. All that being said,... should conflict actually reach space (something I believe the "Space Force" is actually HOPING for,... which is kinda sad when you think about it) Battleships will rise again to prominence, as the carrier and submarine advantage is completely negated in the space environment. Regardless of what Star Wars may want you to believe, fightercraft are completely impractical in space. I do not want to EVER see actual combat in space happen in real life,... but when nations try, the Battleship as a concept will once again be revived
@@k1productions87 The funny thing is we already have the tech. The barrier is the lack of infrastructure in space because getting from Earth to Orbit is the biggest cost, once you manufacture up there you drop like 90% in expenses. If you could build something with the material costs of Gerald Ford or Nimitz class ships in space the whole Naval Warfare branch would become obsolete cause instead of "freedom of sailing" exercises the US could just drop a warning shot near the Chinese artificial islands that hits like a small asteroid like the ones recently filmed in Russia. You can already see space agencies pushing for swarm satellite launches, that is the first phase of starting to build space infrastructure. I would say by the late 21st century the first space battleships will be put to service. The race for infrastructure will start in this decade. Watch the news the moment space becomes non-international is when it will begin.
Best part about the scene is the sound design for the Mighty Mo’s guns. That appealing shotgun blast sound. Lol. Best shot is when the camera passes the ship as the forward main battery blasts away, one gun at a time. (4:25 to 4:28)
Aliens: break them like we did with all the other ships *Hits Mighty Mo* Missouri: Bitch please the Japanese hit me harder than that, this is what you call a hit
i love the iowa class battleships the us navy really needs to put them back on active duty because we could use them again in todays world because we need the og battleships not the newer ones we need the veteran warships of ww2 and etc.
@@informationoverload2487 she had more armor than Missouri and bigger guns. Maybe in a world where Yamato survived and she was somehow in this movie, she'd come around from the other side of the Island. While Missouri gets their attention with the drift, Yamato comes up behind and says hello with her 9 18.1
@@phantomwraith1984 I'm surprised you got measurements of the guns right. However By the time Yamato came around the island the battle would have been over by then
And With the Somalian Colonization of the Alien Planet, Somalia would jump straight into a universal Super Power while the US, Russia, China are left with their jaws open.
The interesting thing to consider is battleships are designed to be massive artillery guns with armor made to take hits nonstop... the fact that the alien ship wasn’t knocked over in the first volley is a miracle considering those guns can knock over ships 2 miles away let alone 700 ft or so... give the aliens some credit, their tech isn’t weak, battleships in Melee are OP
Those were 16-inch guns. SIXTEEN INCHES!! Those shells weighed about a ton each and would vaporize anything within about 1000 feet when they detonated. Battleships could sling them by the dozens. Damn.....
@@thatguy22441and can throw projectiles of 1200kg up to 32 km far. The Yamato was even more powerful and the Bismarck more modern, but I love battleships. The film is absurd, but nice to see this nice ship in action.
pretty sure mothership was made of Lorencium. They Served As Naval Craft And Operated By Floating Across Water Making Short Jumps To Regent Their Positions, Their Primary Weaponry Consisted Of Giant Explosive Pegs Like Ordnance Fired From Turrets That Are On Top Of The Ship's Hull. The Weaponry Is Actually Inspired By The Pegs Used In The Battleship Board Game To Designate A Hit Or Miss. Standard Anti-Weapon Defenses Were Capable Of Destroying Them But a Single Projectile Once Embedded Into It's Targets Drilled Down And Exploded Causing Considerable Damage.
Love this movie! Cheesy and cliched, yes, based on a board game, yes, but, I LOVE the tribute it gives to the spirit of those who have served. I still get goosebumps when discussing the reactivation of the Missouri, the glimpses of her former crew silently observing in the background, then stepping up with the line ‘What do you need son?’ Love that moment! The AC/DC song Thunderstruck, awesome choice. The moment when Missouri slides and fires side on, brilliant! The tribute to the Army Veteran fighting hand to hand, ‘I got this!’ Great, fun, movie!! ❤️ Whose ready to play with the big boys…..!! 😊
Alien captain:Are the weapons ready Alien soldier:yes sir Alien Captain:ok Fire Alien captain:hahaha what are they doing weve got them for sure «Misouri does an epic drift and avoids the missilles» Aliens:oh shi Misouri:Omae wa mou...shindeiru Alien captain:NANI?
these are Regents ships or Stringers they are using Movements from Amphibious Creatures. these ships had more effective and more damage than our warships currently in service
In all likelihood (real life) he could have been the Commander of the Carrier Strike Group, or if it was a Fleet Joint Forces Command, he might be a four star afloat (although unlikely). This would be in addition to the Carrier commander, the Wing Commander, and the Logistics Commander of the CSG; which also likely be on the carrier for the sheer availability of space and capability to coordinate the 3CI of the battlespace.
I’m a Missouri native born and raised. The praise for the battleship USS Missouri still echoes throughout our state. We’ve had historical figures before. We’ve had Jesse James. We’ve had Walt Disney hell we even had the president who commissioned the USS Missouri to the South Pacific president Harry Truman. But out of all of those......the USS Missouri is our states pride and joy.
uss missouri is definitely best battleship but in this battle from this movie right here is plot armor. and uss missouri would be destroyed by 20 to 30 Pegs using from Regent Mothership Aircraft Carrier.
I served on the Iowa until just before she was moth balled into a museum. I've been fortunate enough to witness the power of the 16 in guns. I promise you they are very intimidating. The explosive sound the guns make and the explosion on the island are very very close to the actual level in real life.
This is why I LOVE ww2 era battleships. Sure they don't have missiles like modern ones but the modern ones don't have guns that can destroy pretty much anything.
Matthew Boeding actually it would have been the Missouri, they were in the process of moving her to a new port, so the movie makers approached them about using her for the movie and they agreeed
A-10 thunderbolt II: I can shred you all with my Gau 8 avenger I can fly with half a wing missing one engine Gone and half a tail and if I get shrapnel in my engines they can restart don't bother trying to shoot my pilot you won't get through the armor
The SciFi author Alan Dean Foster based his novels on the premise “Danger, humans, do not touch.” In one short story, which had humans locked on Earth, once the Shield was down, the main character remarked “Its been so long since we’ve had a good war.” Nuff said!
@@netuzer5895 The Missouri belt armor was about 310 mm thick. The decks which the aliens weapons penetrated are about 25 - 125 mm thick. The thickest armor on the Iowa class were the battery armor, about 490 mm. Compared to todays standards, modern battle tanks have harder armor and act as over 1000 mm vs sabot and anti rockets.
Hmm one thing I've just noticed now after coming back for a nostalgia trip: 0:52 the main guns weren't considered a threat. it's only when it scanned the auxiliary missile/torpedo (not sure which) at 1:35 did the aliens consider the battleship a threat. They sure regretted it when those supposed smoke stacks suddenly belched out boulder sized slugs at them.
I think they just saw the aux weapons and were like 'threat incoming', so they went to scan all possible weapons the ship had, with the auxiliary stuff being the first. The main turrets were scanned after they were turned to starboard at 2:32
@@psychologicaltirefire8190 Maybe those aliens didn't have those concepts, or if they are, they just considered them obsolete because they might've believed that those shells can't damage their armour.
From what it looks like, their weaponry is projectile/missile based. They didn't identify those random pipes as a threat until they started making similar movements to their turrets, where they then realized that they were some form of weapon
Gave the ol girl a spin before decommissioning it into a museum. A legendary battleship. Fought many wars, and came out victorious. A historic landmark today. Honor to all the veterans who fought hard to make America our home. Bless every one of them.
So the alien ship shows off hundreds of futuristic projectiles, sits there doing absolutely nothing until the Missouri gets in firing range, then flings three German stick grenades at it and misses. No wonder Jack Sparrow beat it with a WWII relic
@Aeolus: Their shells needed 10-12 seconds to reach our cruisers deck (3:28)... Our canon shells only 2 seconds to reach their ship (5:20). That is unfair!!! Poor aliens, poor technology! Maybe next time!
In the movie the aliens are shown standing down when the humans retreat. I think the implication is that they don't want to waste ammo since they're stranded on Earth without reinforcements or resupply (which is why they're trying to contact the homeworld). In this case, it seems to me that they're powering up the turrets to intimidate the humans and giving them a chance to retreat, before committing to a fight.
This is from the art of war, and does apply(at least the first half) “All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.”
Aaron Sanceda I mean throw a few CRAMs on there and it’s pretty much impervious to everything. Or instead of CRAMs the Russian equivalent which is better (I forgot the name of it)
Wdym. The Iowa was so good because of its radar fire control. Just about every American, British, and German BB had some form of radar be it a gun fire control or an air search radar. An EMP would just about shut down a battleship built from 1930 onwards and one built prior has such horrendous gunnery that it would be borderline useless.
@@aaronsanceda4085 That might actually happen tho. The U.S Army is testing a new gun that sounds to be a normal gun that fires a rocket assisted shell but fires out over 1,000 miles.
@@psychologicaltirefire8190 Umm hate to break it to you, but compare to the computers we have now, the computers back in 1930s are the size of a fricking room, all analogue.
