The British would never have scrapped this if they had realized how legendary it would become. Oh well, at least there is still this beautiful 3D rendering to enjoy.

Stefan, Your 3D renderings of these magnificant vessels are very detailed and offer a great visual aspect, scale and impression of what they must have been like. Your work on the battlecruiser Hood has been very helpful to ensure a scale model I’ve been building is accurate. I appreciate all the research you must have done to achieve as close to perfection as possible. I know this due to all the research I have also done. Good job - thank you!

I always wondered watching drawings of old battleships what those peculiar diagonally placed tubes were on the side of the fuselage. Now I guessed it. They were part of the anti torpedo defense system!

I am not a massive enthusiast regarding history or even military history. I do however enjoy making models of warships and other vehicles, physical or digital, and nothing has helped me more than the magnificent work of people like you Stefan. Since these models have helped me personally on an emotional and to some extent psychological level I would like to say from the near bottom of my heart; thank you. I find it hard to fully convey the importance of these things, but rest assured that were it not for this very model I would be worse of than I am today, so once again, thank you.

Revolutionary when built. Obsolete by the time of the Battle of Jutland; she wasn't even with the fleet.
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 лет назад
A bit slow, and without main gun directors; but she was still a battleship and could have taken part, maybe as part of a slower backup fleet trailing the first. If involved in a fight with the High Seas fleet, I'm sure you'd quite like the sight of a squadron of older battleships and pre-dreadnoughts showing up, or sight of it might be enough to make you turn tail and run, depending on perspective. Dreadnought could act as flotilla leader, as she might be the most modern.

Fantastic! Trying to figure out which 1/350 ship to finish; this, a Kagero or Indianapolis. I have all the after market goodies for all, and the Kagero and Dreadnought are built up to a similar level of completion-albiet I have Dreadnought's funnels complete-with all the extra p.e. So it's really between those two. I'm leaning towards dreadnought, but don't really need to decide 'till later in the yr, when I'll have my current build finished: a Type 23 frigate-Monmouth. I've already put about a yr, or 200hrs into Dreadnought, so I estimate all three of these ships will take about 300hrs to build, or in Dreadnought's case; finish [as it's a 2 yr build].

What was that net on her sides used for?
@MaskedVengeanceTV
@MaskedVengeanceTV 7 лет назад
George Enache, that's a torpedo net. it's a heavy metal net ships used in harbour, at anchor, to defend against torpedo attacks. it's purpose is similar to reactive armour of today: as it creates space between the torpedoes explosion and the ships hull, thus protecting the ships hull by creating space for the torpedoe to explode and forces of said explosion dissipate. they weren't entirely effective, because the net was heavy, it was a pain to repair if it was damaged. it also couldn't be used underway at speed.

willamdafoetv that's cool. Thank you
@russg1801
@russg1801 6 лет назад
Couldn't have proven very effective or practical; it wasn't retained on ships built just a few years later.
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 лет назад
It was for catching fish. It was disguised initially as a fishing boat. Or was that designed.
@dubsy1026
@dubsy1026 5 лет назад
@@russg1801 yeah it wasn't, it was more supposed to snag the torpedoes. As torps got heavier, the ship mounted net became inadequate to stop them. They were also heavy, bulky, and only usable in port. Not great

Just yesterday I was wondering what the poles on the sides are for... Now see them deployed I guess it's a torpedo net .
@andrewgillis3073
@andrewgillis3073 3 года назад
Yup. But they were later taken off. This happened between mid-1915 and mid-1916. Interestingly, at the largest battle of the Dreadnought battleships, Jutland, HMS Dreadnought was being cleaned and refitted, and so missed the battle.

was it the Monitor & Merrimac that made wooden ships obsolete & which led to Dreadnought?
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 лет назад
Yes. Dreadnought got a balance of factors right in one design; one big main battery was the chief one-as everything before had only a few, but she also introduced I think steam turbines and had a main belt that was sloped, increasing it's protection, which was very well thought out. No super-firing turrets though, as was felt smoke and flash from the guns underneath would obscure the sights above. So Orion's the first modern looking battleship shape wise, which I think was the next class after this, but Dreadnought is 90% of that shape. It's really only lacking gun directors and an enclosed bridge. Plus, the main spotting tower is right above the plume, and the bridge is right next to it; it's main flaws.
@davidkaminski615
@davidkaminski615 6 лет назад
While Monitor and C.S.S. Virginia introduced armored framing on an existing hull and the fully rotatable turret, they didn't make wooden ships obsolete. That was accomplished by La Gloire and H.M.S. Warrior. They were traditionally-shaped hulled ships made from iron plates. It was a melding of iron-hulled ships and rotatable turrets in the late 1880s (think U.S.S. Maine) that formed the pattern that developed eventually into Dreadnought.

Does anyone know how they were supposed to pass ammo to the guns on the turrets
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 лет назад
Trained seals. They would be trained through fish caught in the giant fishing nets.
@BlunderMunchkin
@BlunderMunchkin 5 лет назад
The turrets extended deep into the ship. The ammo and power rooms were built into the lower levels of the turret and were raised to the guns via elevators. Here's a video showing details: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C2sYtq7hI74.html
