* TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Oripy has created a whole series of hyrbid puzzles marrying up some of the best Japanese logic problems with sudoku. Many of them have been recommended to us over the last few weeks so we thought we'd have a crack at this one: Kaiserliche Marine. This is a SERIOUSLY excellent puzzle which combines elements of both puzzle types beautifully.
Have a go at the puzzle here:
sudokupad.app/anfigouctj?sett...
Rules:
Normal 9x9 Sudoku rules apply.
Battleships: Place the given fleet of ships into the grid so that no two ships are touching, not even diagonally. Rotating ships is permitted. A clue outside the grid indicates the number of cells in the corresponding row or column that are occupied by ship segments.
German fleet: All ships are German Whisper lines. Adjacent digits along the line must have a difference of at least 5.
Kropki Dots: Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive. Digits separated by a black dot have a 1:2 ratio, meaning one is exactly double the other. Not all dots are necessarily given.
There is a smaller example puzzle here:
sudokupad.app/r2j26yf2s3
(With differences along the lines needing to be only 3.)
** HEXCELLS STREAM TONIGHT **
Our latest Hexcells stream was streamed last night. You can watch it here:

** PATREON REWARD DAY **
Today we published a new sudoku hunt, Evening Attractions, themed around Negative Constraints as our March competition.
They'll also be a bonus crossword video from Simon and his solve of Region Geometry by Emre Kolotoğlu (3hr 36min long...!) released over the weekend. And Simon's discussion video about Dean Mayer's Sunday Times crossword from last weekend will appear at 1minute past midnight on Sunday morning (which is the moment that competition has ended.)

@20:30 Useless Trivia: The largest ship in Battleship is the 5-cell Carrier. The Battleship itself is the 4-cell ship. The Cruiser and Submarine are 3-cells each, and the Destroyer is the tiny 2-cell ship. And the key to victory is always going to be finding that sneaky little Destroyer, because you can blast literally 49% of the entire board and still not find it. Often are the games of Battleship where the 2 players are each trying to find that Destroyer, both having sunk everything else.

I will say one thing I caught earlier than you, Simon, is that column 9 couldn't have a "high" digit with the 5's white dot. Because from around 46:00 you knew there was a high digit in row 2, row 7 and row 8. And one is forced in the row5 and 6 ship. Now the rest of the video is all the things you figured out before me, so we are at around 400 - 1

Looks very cool! My first thought seeing the grid was that the white dots were "misses" and the black dots were "hits" like in a game and that restricted the ships, could be another cool way to set up a battleship/sudoku puzzle, maybe that's been done
@HunterJE
@HunterJE 4 месяца назад
When you think of it the dots are all misses by implication, at least if you interpret a shot that is on the edge of a battleship rather than inside it as a "near miss," since the battleships can never cross them without breaking GW rules...

I ended up with one possible way all the ships could fit in but I could clearly see there wasn't just one way. Couldn't figure out how to be certain, especially since I hadn't appreciated that they couldn't occupy both sides of a black dot either. I did consider the white ones. Pretty sure I saw over 50 videos by now and I still learned something new today: If you hit a ship with either a black or a white bomb, it will break apart and sink. Or something like that.

1:01:40 The angle under which the 3-in-the-corner confetti is popping up is rather unusual in this puzzle, probably due to the different scaling of the puzzle because of the ships shown at the right-hand side. The confetti does not go diagonally, but straight toward the centre of the puzzle screen!

37:23 is easier: r9c5 cannot be 2 (would force a 5 in r8c5) and cannot be 9 (would force r8c5 to 6, r7c5 to be 3, which in turn due to german whispers needs a 9 in r6c5, which collides with the origial 9). So r9c5 is 17. Each if which makes r8c5 a 4. The rest of c5 follows (except a 12 pair)
@sakkikoyumikishi
@sakkikoyumikishi 3 месяца назад
21:22: "either of these could be battleship at the moment" No, r7c4 can definitely *not* be battleship, because even assuming the smallest possible battleship (aka a two-ship in r6/7c4), that would rule out battle ships in column five from rows 5, 6 and 7. Whoch would mean only r2/3/4 could be a battleship in column 5 anymore, which would only allow for a maximum of 4 battle ship segements in column 5 total, which is too few. We can *also* tell for sure that there is either a 5-attleship in column 5 (which would mean, by nonogram rules, that r3/4/5/6c5 are all battleships for sure) or there is a 4-battleship in column 5 with an additional segment from a horizontal ship. That horizontal ship would *have* to go in row 2, since row 7 can't contain a horizontal ship anymore, which would force the 4-ship into r4/5/6/7c5. This tells us that there is *always* part of a vertical battleship in rows 4, 5 and 6 of coloum five, we just don't know yet whether they belong to a 4-ship or the 5-ship

@Oripy164
@Oripy164 3 месяца назад
I don't think that is true. There is 6 cells that needs 2+3 ship cells. So there is either 3 on top and 2 on the bottom or 2 on top and 3 on the bottom.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 3 месяца назад
If the boats in column 9 went "three from top, space, two from top" then that would shade r6c9 orange, wouldn't it? Or did I misunderstand? (There has to be a three cell ship and a two cell ship in both columns 5 and 9 - neither can have two 2-cell ships since that leaves two 3-cell ships in the other column).

But looking at the final solution, I happened to check the video where Simon was testing a number in Box 8 and I was actually right! Not sure what my mistake was on my first attempt, then. Restarted and was stuck for a bit before looking at the video again to see how the black dots in row 7 took care of the pencil marks in Box 8. I've played some battleship puzzles and am just bad at them in general, so am happy to have finished this one.

Correct me if I 'm wrong but the rules don't forbid ships to be diagonal, especially since the rules specify that the ships can be rotated. Therefore @25:35 Simon should not make those cells blue
@Oripy164

The rules do not allow for diagonal ships. It is not explicit, but a ship can't change size, a diagonal ship would be sqrt(2) time longer!

Another lovely solve, with, sadly, another occasion when you use "criteria" as a singular noun (23.25). Perhaps it is becoming a more common usage, but it is odd and rather disconcerting to hear it from you.

I will never understand how his scanning works... whenever he puts his curser right on the spot where the next step is I think: YES!!!!! 2 seconds later he just starts a 500iq move on the other side of the grid which will eventually lead him to the same point. Leaving me disapointed that he will never even know that all rhis was actually not needed hahahaha

I don't know how many of your viewers play the puzzles exclusively on phones but I'm one. This layout makes the grid far too small to see so is sadly unplayable.

Hearing Simon refer to the 5-cell ship as the Battleship was confusing to me. Maybe it's different in the UK or in pencil puzzles, but I always recalled the ships being named as follows: 2 - PT Boat 3 - Destroyer / Submarine 4 - Battleship 5 - Aircraft Carrier

In my version (UK), it was 2 - Destroyer 3 - Cruiser/Submarine 4 - Battleship 5 - Aircraft Carrier (It always annoyed me that I wasn't allowed to dive my submarine below the surface. What's the point of having a sub? 🙂)

Around 13 minutes you could have got a 4 and an 8 in box 8. When you said the top row of box 8 is a 123 pair that's impossible due to there being a black dot in box 7 and box 9. If r7b8 has a 123 then what can the other black dots be? They can't be 12,24,36 so they both have to be 48 which is impossible

By "Battleship" game logic, the 5 cell "battleship" is an air craft carrier, the 4 cells are battleships, the threes are subs or cruisers, and the two cell are destroyers. Also, Simon missed quite a bit of high/low logic in the puzzle. For instance, the 456 on the black dot could not have a six, and the two battleships had to alternate high and low on the rows.

Not sure if there are different versions of battleship around the world that feature different ship titles with different sizes but I am most familiar with what you described. I have also heard of the smallest ship being called a patrol boat.

The ruleset is technically broken, the battleship clues are also outside the grid, but don't refer to where the battleships are place in the grid. Needs to be the numeric clues...
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 3 месяца назад
My argument would be: The battleships outside the grid are the "given fleet". Nothing suggests they're clues, so they're not "clues outside the grid". The only clues outside the grid are the numbers. 🙂

I only mentioned it because I thought at first that they referred to where the pieces had to be in the rows, although they could be turned sideways, until I saw the numbers outside the grid. @@RichSmith77
