Three birthdays to celebrate today including that of the constructor Riffclown whose puzzle we attempt in the video! It's called Whispered Somethings and it's a beautiful hybrid of two of our favourite rules. Give it a try at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. All lines are both 'German Whispers' and Region Sum Lines! Digits on Region Sum Lines have an equal sum within each 3x3 box the line passes through. (Eg r6c6 = r5c7 + r4c7 = r7c5 + r7c4 = r8c3 + r9c2). Adjacent digits on German Whispers lines must have a difference of at least 5. In this puzzle, all lines must satisfy BOTH properties.

Thank you all for the well wishes. I have multiple sclerosis and had a flare up so I'll be out of the hospital in a few days after IV steroids and the like. I really appreciate the well wishes! If Simon or Mark see this, I'm looking forward to the next live stream of the Cube game, the next Phistomefel, the next sudoku, and the next cryptic crossword! Your consistent videos have been a real treat during the unstable pandemic times. Being able to relax and do a lovely logical solve has done wonders to keep me sharp. Truly thank you for building such a wonderful puzzle community.

I spent almost twice as much time as Simon (79:56), but I DID IT!! there is no way in h*ll I would have been able to this completely on my own a year ago, or even four months ago. I know this isn't the hardest puzzle (cause those I can forget about), but is was very, very beautiful! So thank you to riffclown for making me feel smart, and to Simon and Mark for making me smart enough to solve these lovely puzzles. Many hearts! ❤❤❤

Hey there. I just want to step in and say that you made my life a lot more enjoyable in the last 2 months. I broke up with my girlfriend of 3 years a month ago and broke her heart, I think about it every day. Whenever I watch these Videos it is the only time of day where I can just focus on one thing without my brain trailing off to happier times of the past. Thank you so much Simon and Mark for the energy and enthusiasm you two put in your videos, it is actually kinda saving my life.

Double clicking when you're in coloring mode will select all cells that have that color (even if shared with other colors) regardless of the numbers. You have to switch back to any of the number modes to make double clicking follow the numbers instead of the colors :)

If the lowest line had two high digits in box 8 and teo low digits in box 9, the sum in box 8 would be at least 6+1+8=15 whereas the sum in box 9 would be at most 3+9+2=14

Wonderful puzzle. At the outset I was not confident that I could break in, or even break through once I was in. But it was an elegant and fair puzzle to solve - such a joy to do.

30:37 finish. I was slowed down for a few minutes when I erroneously eliminated a 9 from r9c7, which broke my puzzle six ways from Sunday. I noticed my problem (eventually) and was able to correct things. Excellent puzzle!

What a puzzle! The logic in row 8 column 5 has to be one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen all year and the main sudoku wasn’t bad either. It was both incredibly surprising and brilliantly entertaining (very fitting for a birthday tribute now I think about it), I loved it from start to finish. Thanks riffclown for a wonderful sudoku hybrid and Simon for the solve. :)

Your logic at 22:40 was flawed, not in that your conclusion was wrong (you were right), but your initial basis of putting a 67 pair on the line in box 8. You already had a 67 square in the box, so at minimum it would have been 6,1,8 on the line in box 8. In box 9 because there was already a 4 in the box, the maximum the line could have been was 3,9,2. So there was no way you could have made the two sides of the line equal since box 8 could have been at minimum 15, and box 9 at maximum 14. So you could have concluded much earlier that box 8 couldn't have 2 highs on its side of the line. Which is an easier/earlier way of determining the orientation of the line.

Another way to look at it: if yellow was low, then 4 would have to go in r8c5 (could not go in any other low cell in row 8), placing 9s on both sides of it.

The combination of the two rules on the green line is ingenious. I only had to go back a few steps once because I misplaced a digit, otherwise everything went very smoothly and logically .... albeit a lot slower than Simon's. A really wonderful puzzle.

41:50 The double click was going haywire cause you might have had the color option selected. If you have it selected when you double click a colored cell, it will highlight all the same colored cells. Switch to digit entry and it will prioritize highlighting all of the same digits over colored cells instead. The cleverness of Sven's software knows no limits.

I had no hesitations in this solve and actually beat Simon's solve time. Usually Simon almost instinctively knows where to look next to make the easiest progress, but he ignored the two mirrored lines for too long so even with my slow plodding I came in a couple of minutes ahead. Very unusual that I'm not the one pulling out long logical strings which can easily be shortcut if you come in from the other side of the puzzle.

Brilliant :) My only input is that you can use double click if you have a lot of colour Simon, you just can't be in colour mode, you have to be in corner, centre or normal mode. Thanks for bringing joy to my evenings!

TWICE (at least) there was an opportunity for Simon to realize that 9 and 6 were placed in box 7... I was so hopeful when he placed that 6 in box 4 for him to notice that. "this 6 isn't doing much" SIMON PLEASE YOUR PENCIL MARKINGS- "this 36 pair [in box 1] cant be resolved" SIMON YOURE KILLING ME IT WAS RESOLVED FIVE MINUTES BEFORE YOU PLACED IT (I say this with all love and respect I would not be able to solve this puzzle at my level but this PAINED me)

97:58 here, plus the several minutes it took for me to open up a text file and chart out all the possible line combos. Doing that really helped, though, and was probably the only way I could have solved it in any kind of reasonable time. I also wasted a few minutes near the end overlooking a simple elimination. I do not really like the region sums variation very much, but in combo with the whispers line it wasn't too bad.

Double click does work with coloring, you just need to have any tool except for colors selected. Also, I noticed that you're not using one very nice feature. If you have some digit, for example only in r1c1 and r1c3, but already know a digit in r1c2, you can select all three to add pencil marks. They don't overwrite big digits.

I keep forgetting the five-apart rule. 26:52, I paused the video to see if I could work out what pressure box 7's Two possible combinations put pressure on Box 1/4 Both are valid solutions, but it turns out, that The small line in BOTH incidences is a 7 = 1+6; Always, because you either use the 7 in box 7 or you use the 8 in box 1, so you put pressure on it to always be a 7-1-6 (the small line that is in box 1&4). Sadly I didn't see a way to eliminate either option otherwise. The box 7 is still up in the air. [36-38 minutes in, He doesn't even find out that that was the case, I don't know that it would have helped him anywhere anyways.] Just as a note you've now cut twice, and if you didn't say you had cut, I would have never noticed, They were so seamless in this episode.

When solving this I was so happy to when I got to the situation at 22:10 because all I had to do was ask myself where 4 would go in row 8 if yellow is low. The only remaining is r8c5 which would have to be flanked by two 9s. So happy to move om from there and then (more than once) get contradictions. I had also gotten the 19 pairs on column 5 and 8. And still, when all I had to do to finish, I failed. :-(

double click does work. but if u have enabled the color tool, the selection grabs the colors. if u enable on of the 3 number tools, u grab with a double the numbers.

these puzzles take you so much longer than they should as you get fixated in 'harder' areas when there are 'easier' areas to work on - BUT having said this , if you enjoy working like this then it's fine - the thing is to enjoy the puzzle :D

68:12, needed help to see the 1,9 cells in the upper and lower lines to finish the puzzle, it was tough for me. I kept forgetting to take into account the German Whispers.

Not sure if I'll move ahead on this one. I started out thinking you couldn't have 4s and 6s midline but that's old logic for when significant parts of the GW is in the same zone, which often isn't the case! I had build up so much logic that it's not worth restarting all over!

34:29 for me. The combination of the lines makes for interesting logic. Can you put a 6 here? Nope. 6 can only be used with a 1 and adds to 7 while I need a total of 9. Really cool how people keep coming up with new kinds of logic and deductions with pre existing variants.

felt like a storm trooper. he said that realized the 9 (if in box 7) has to be next to be next to a 23 to balance out the 6-1-7 trio and box 7 has a 2 in it! took me 5 minutes to see

29: 33 *1. R9C4 sees 7 and 8, 2. Box 9 has a 4 and the side with 9 NEEDS a 4 if it has 7 8 on the other side

Around the 28:30 mark all you had to do was look at column 4. You already had 1, 2, 7 and 8 marked so for r9c4 the only numbers you could put there were 3, 4 and 6 bc that box already had a 7 in it, it can't be 5, you knew the middle number on the line was 1 or 9 and 2 and 8 were in that box and/or on that column. If you tried putting a 1 in the middle of the line, the number for r9c4 would of had to be a 6 and then r8c6 would have had to be and 8 which equals 15. Then you would have had to put a 9 in r9c8, the middle box of the line in box 9. Therefore you would need 6 to equal 15 and you can't use 1 and 5 bc 9 isn't 5 away from 5 and you can't use 4 and 2 bc 4 is in the box already. That would have told you the middle number in box 8 had to be a 9 and the one in box 9 had to be a 1. Sometimes you just need to use a little normal sudoku to figure stuff out. You get caught up on all the other rules and sometimes you forget that. Anyway, great solve as always.

The 9 in Row 7 Column 2 was available for 80% of the puzzle

Anyone Else noticed how you could tell the high-low values of the lowest as Soon as the 7 got placed in box 8? If the middle line value in box 8 was 1 then the other two has to be 6 and 8 at the lowest, on the line in box 9, ifthe middle value is 9 then the other two spaces has to be 2 and 3 at the highest and That does not work.

There is a bit of missed easy logic at 21:45 and the box 8/9 line. If yellow was low, that would be 4 lows in row 8, 4 would have to go in the yellow in box 8 which would need 9 on both sides. So yellow is high. Ah - he spots it at 29:00 At 26:30 - if r5c2 is a 7, r3c1 and r9c2 both become 8 - then there is nowhere for 8 in box 5.

36min 10sec nearly all the time I saved on Simon was at the very very beginning I had the 8 in r5c4 placed in less than 3 minutes and had narrowed down a lot of the digits on those 3 whisper lines that don't have a twin much faster. Really though the only reason for any of it being faster is how much time Simon loses explaining what he is doing.

Hi Simon. I’ve noticed that when solving the last few ‘region construction’ sudokus that you’ve often tried colouring and ended up with two or more regions of different colours which could be the same. May I suggest using the pen tool to avoid this? You can then trace possible region connections without the problem of running out of colours, before using the colouring more strategically once the regions have been fully drawn. It isn’t always possible to only use the pen tool of course (diagonal lines are not yet an option) but it would perhaps avoid some confusion. Drawing boundaries to mark regions has certainly helped (though I have no idea how you’re managing to draw lines on the edges of the grid in the software, I tried it last time I used the pen tool and it wasn’t possible)! Thanks for the work that you do.

At 41:49 "double clicking isn't working with all that colouring" - I'm not quite convinced, but even if it was true - why not get rid of the colouring, when all the lines have been resolved and it doesn't really look like the (remainder of the) puzzle is much about high-low? Well, that was a rhetorical question - I know Simon loves his colouring. :-)

32.50 that the 2 is in R9 C9 is an assumption, surely? At that stage the 2 in box 7 is not in either R8C2 or R8C3. It could be in R8C1 or even in R9C1 or 3. R8C2 could easily be a 3 and R8C3 could be a 1 at this stage, surely?

Please watch your own old videos on YT and compare the volume with today's video... you have a more expensive mic now but the vow is just too low. May be you could use a collar mic?
