In terms of why Gaius is being involved in everything... keep in mind that he was a (multi-)world-famous genius back when the human population was in the neighborhood of 50 billion. Still having someone of that caliber around now that the population is closer to 50k is absolutely ridiculously lucky. Heck, the smartest civilian in the fleet even being in the top _million_ minds of the prior Colonial society was roughly a coin toss. They're making as much use of him as they can. As for him being weird, and people not calling him on it... well. Humanity is desperately trying to survive, who are _they_ to question the resident eccentric genius?

I think everyone just expects Baltar to just be an eccentric genius. On the ship, he's proven himself on MANY occasions, by pointing out the first human cylon, creating the detector, by being targeted BY the cylons, and now with this - as for trust, they have every reason to trust him, despite his oddness.

17:24 Remember what Adama said in a previous episode: "when the military become the police, the people often become the enemy of the state"? Besides the father son goodness, this scene brings out an important point. The grandfather was a lawyer, I think a rights and philosophical lawyer. This may explain his learned view about command and the sheer volume of books in Adama's cabin. They can't all be cheezy mystery novels.

It is like the decision is not even in his hands, he knows it needs to happen, that it is what starbuck would do... So yeah he needs to do it... To prove himself to himself. Regarding Baltar's odd behavior - important to keep in mind that there are such a small number of humans left. Think about how few scientists are still around. So even if everybody sees Baltar as a weirdo who talks to himself and humps the air, they have to tolerate it. Also, keep in mind that everyone in the fleet is kind of crazy - survivor's guilt, PTSD, etc.

A bit of Viper trivia for those interested. When the American F-16 fighter came out, it had the name ‘Fighting Falcon’. Because the original Battlestar show was released at the same time the fighter was released, 1978, pilots informally called their F-16s ‘Vipers’. The name stuck to the point where they’re now commonly referred to as Vipers.

Hand of God has to be one of my favourite episodes of season 1. Lee’s little moment of proving himself was so rewarding to watch, and I believe the scene between him and his father with the lighter is the first time we hear what will become a recurring Adama family theme in the soundtrack. Bear McCreary really has a way of dragging out emotions with his music and I always start to grin during the victory celebration and the first notes of “Wander My Friends”. It’s also just a really nice change of pace to see the humans/Colonial fleet have a chance to hit back at the Cylons rather than be forced to constantly react to the Cylons’ actions. Great reaction as usual, the payoff with the reveal of the real reason behind the decoys has to be pretty close to what I was feeling when I first watched that part 😃

Morally bankrupt in what way? The problem I find is that the ones that claim moral superiority do not actually have moral consistency. they possess no moral axioms and rely on moral intuition instead of having actual morals. It is highly doubtful that any of you have even taken a first year philosophy class. Believing that you possess moral superiority while seeking attention on RU-vid seems highly suspect. The Cylons built an empire or network of sorts out beyond The Red Line. These bases or outposts were not necessarily built to keep humans confined to a small range. Never stated one way or another in the show but implied in a media poster sold during the run, the Twelve Colonies were very insular and likely didn't explore even before Cylons. They lived on planets or moons of gas giants orbiting 4 separate star systems that orbited one another in a close cluster but far enough away that Jump was necessary. The Red Line was outside the cluster.

You need more Red Bull because your reactions seemed a lot more giddy today. 😁 Or maybe it was because, more "Space Sh!t!" than normal, and more surprises than normal for this one. Best line of the episode, and one of the best lines of the season: "You better, or I'll kick your ass. It's a good lighter". The musical track that plays in that scene has the same title: A Good Lighter. About the Alert Vipers, I had the same question when first watching this episode on air. Seemed like it was a bit lax to have them not in the launch tubes. The only thing I can think of is that they didn't put the Vipers in the tubes to save every drop of fuel they could. Some folks have equated Lee going through the conveyor tunnel as a ripoff of the Death Star trench run...I both can see it and dismiss it since it's different enough. I'm always amazed at just how well actors with heavy accents can absolutely bury them. Jaime Bamber is one of those. He's an Aussie, and if you find him talking with his accent, I have a feeling that you'd be putting him a little more in the HawtFactor when going, "We need more Lee in tank tops"...LOL I enjoy sharing stuff like this with people but have scant little chance to actually do that. This series makes me feel like that's happening. I know that's not the intent, but thank you for creating that feeling.

Poor Helo. He’s on a planet seemingly only inhabited by beautiful women - and, granted, a lot of killbots and radiation. I get that he’s super confused about the whole thing, but some of it doesn’t seem half bad. And yeah, weird about Sharon. It’s always oddly emphasized when a woman on a TV show is shown being sick… Don’t know if she can just stop breathing, btw. The last Leoben probably isn’t just drifting alive in space since he got airlocked (and if he is, that’s kinda horrible). If you shoot a human-shaped Cylon, they bleed and die; if they get beat up by Tricia Helfer, they bruise. They are organic, and presumably have all the typical biological functions, hence the need for the super-sciency Cylon detector to tell them apart. Yes, some superhuman abilities, but it’s not like they’re Terminators (although it’d be a hoot to see them cuss as they try to shoehorn an Arnold-sized endoskeleton into a rather petite Sharon). If they had, I dunno, metal bones you could probably detect them with a fridge magnet. All that to say that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, so oxygen and nutrition are likely required.

One of the things that surprised me about the series (and there were a lot of surprises) is just how little it focuses on the technology. I think (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) this is the first time that we're even told the name of the ore that they process for fuel. There's never a mention or explanation of how the technology works - largely because it's a show that is character driven and so there's no need to explain those things. My thinking now is that Starbuck and Gaius Baltar are separate sides of the same coin. One is driven by intuition and the other by rationality. But also that this relationship is constantly flipping back and forth: Starbuck taking a rational approach for this mission while Gaius is the one thinking with his gut, or what ever it is that motivates him. This is a big set piece episode, I hope there are more of them coming. Great fun marinated in Greco-Roman mythology. There is so much happening that one could probably write entire books about the mythology referenced here. Wonderful reaction. Things are heating up. Cheers 🍺

From the moment the attacks on the Colonies started until this episode, the only combat has been the Colonials defending themselves. This marks the first time they actively initiate an attack against the Cylons, actually striking back against them instead of reacting defensively. For the first time in this war, the Colonials have a true and proper victory after all the endless defeats and setbacks they've been suffering through.

what I love about this episode and series, the stakes are high, very high, not matter how small or big the victory it always comes at a cost, we are always loosing pilots etc. no matter hoe good the plan was. its war and it really feels like war. and its not just red shirts. thats what sets this apart from many other shows and why you feel so close so soon to many of the characters, even side characters. it makes the series so believable

That strategy is called classic misdirection. Split your forces in two and then you draw the main enemy forces toward you while the other squadron is waiting to launch an attack on the enemy base. While the Cylons are engaged against Galactica, Red squad can move in on the enemy base and take it out. Before the Cylons realize it, they have no place to re-load, refuel or land. It's been used in many a situation in many TV shows including Battlestar Galactica '78.

"Two and ten" = twelve. The body that advises the President, which represents the colonies, are called the Quorum of Twelve. So, Roslin was seeing vipers/serpents with each Quorum member. "All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again."

All has happened before and will happen again - simplest explanation - history repeats itself. This is what this means....re-living when I watched the series the first time, and the second time with my daughter - you will enjoy the experience of this series. Ronald D. Moore and David Eick - the Exec Producers did an outstanding job. Keep an eye out for Ronald D. Moore do a cameo..

I remember how I felt about Gaius early on when the show was airing. I remember because I had many heated debates about who was a Cyclon and why everyone trusted Gaius. My feeling back then was that all the Cyclons that they're aware of are high functioning "apex" humans in their own right. My logic was that Gaius is so flawed that I think they automatically rule him out of being a potential Cyclon. Like how the Galactica is them looking backwards for safety, Gaius being unhinged makes him more human and therefore more prone to being trusted without question

Baltar on hand ad giving his opinion makes some sense. He's the president's science and technology advisor, and they said in the miniseries that he'd won three "Magnet Prizes"- if those are Colonial Nobel-analogues, a guy who has one three knows a little about everyting and a lot about a lot. Hell, a normal engineer knows bits a pieces about a lot, at least as far as "that looks expensive-bomb it" And Lee's trench run is a great execution of the concept.

The flipped/rotated shot of the map table when the 12 vipers are revealed is one of my favorite technical shots of the series. So much conveyed with a simple camera move instead of a static shot or some graphics. I would love to find out how it was done and with what camera.

In regards to Cylons breathing, eating and getting sick: while it was not explicitly stated, I think the fact people in the fleet have no way of detecting them, implicitly confirms they are almost identical to humans. In the crew of Galactica alone there are many talented engineers, there is medical personnel - if the task was trivial, if there were obvious differences, examination of the remains of the Cylon who attempted to bomb Adama in the hall would provide enough info. Not only they have to have all the human bits and bobs, they also can't have any easily discernible extra ones. Thus, if they don't have any additional power source, they have to eat and breathe like humans, and similarly, if they have no extra heat regulation mechanisms, they have to sweat and shiver, and so on and so on - they have to rely on solutions evolution built into humans to solve all the minutiae of functioning. Also, if Cylons didn't need to breathe, Starbuck could have been waterboarding Leoben till the season two and still she would get nowhere :D
@neillio
@neillio 11 месяцев назад
The thing to remember about Baltar is that the fleet really doesn't have an alternative to him. Not only was he outstanding in his field before the Cylon attack, but afterwards he may very well have become the only expert in his field. So at this point his odd behavior is probably chucked up to "eccentric" genius behavior. There's really not been any hard evidence to suggest he's untrustworthy. That said, sure many people have their eye on him.

Another great reaction, which is made easier by the episode being another banger. Being able to hear your thought processes Angela is wonderful. Watching your responses to characters shift, as we learn more about them is just... mwah. Like yourself, I'm very much an 'each to their own' in terms of belief, or any kind of Faith, so I understand your intrigue with the way Faith is used in the show. What I find fascinating, that the writers do so amazingly well, is how each person has their own interpretation of what the texts of their Faith *means* which in turn motivates their further actions. We see the exact verse from prophecy being given different meanings, and both lenses ring true to what we saw being experienced. The writing in this show. Man. Finally, it's wonderful watching where your certainties lay. This person? No. Definitely not / That's not an option, so this must be the meaning ... BSG is one of the few pieces of media that will meaningfully impact the way you interact with stories forever after.

This remains one of my all time favorite BSG episodes to this day and the 1st season finale is one of the craziest, most shocking 40 minutes of tv ever. I was lucky enough to have started watching Battlestar after the first two seasons had already aired so I basically binged them, however after that I had to wait through all of those super long hiatuses with everyone else

Or maybe, does he subscribe and watch the full episodes along "with you"? Does he watch everything? Does he pick and choose shows? What are his favourites? Have there been shows he's watched because you're covering it that he hates? How exactly does he react to thirstylilgal? I get more and more questions the more time goes on

20:13 It was just cut but immediately after Fireball gets killed, Hotdog reports back to Galactica, effectively taking command of Strike Force 1 for the remainder of the battle. Hotdog, literally the least experienced combat pilot in that force and he steps up when it was seemingly falling apart.

This show plays with religious realism a lot! I also find it heavy handed in a lot of other stories, but I personally think BSG does a fantastic job with it. It's worth keeping an eye on because it is an intentional part of the storyline! Love your reactions and seeing what you pick up on and when.
