The misinterpretation is reasonable if you go back to episode 3 of season 1. Viscerys told Alicent that he wasn't sure if he made the right decision.

1:42 It's not in the book, but we really can't know what happened, the book on which the TV show is based is written as if it were a history book 300 years after everything has happened, for the dance of dragons there are 3 sources of information, sometimes they are not very credible or they contradict each other. It's not like the books GoT was based on that have the main characters' points of view.
