In the final shot of the viper and the raider in space, the two are seen waggling from side to side. There's an episode in the original series where Starbuck and Apollo have to return in a raider and they manage to identify themselves by performing the same waggling motion.
@VegetaLF7

Yeah, while it isn't required viewing for this show since this one stands alone, being familiar with the original series adds so much flavor to watching this one with little details like that, seeing the original designs in the museum in the pilot, the tracers used by the Vipers and Raiders being colored the same as the lasers fired by their TOS counterparts, Zarak saying "Captain Apollo" has a nice ring to it when his actor was the original Apollo, etc.
@PreceptorGrant
@PreceptorGrant 7 месяцев назад
The wing waggle is a pilot thing dating back to WWI. It still survives as a gesture of communication to be used when comms aren't available. Mostly used as either an attention-getting gesture 'look at me', or sometimes as acknowledgment or salute.

As someone else has alluded in the comments, the Starbuck shootdown and return in a captured/salvaged Raider is lifted from an episode of the 70s version (and to a degree, also an episode of Galactica 1980), right down to marking the raider with a yellow stripe under the wing, and the little wing-waggle maneuver as a recognition signal. Also, it's pretty apt that Helo was betrayed by a chrome toaster, given the nickname given to the Cylons in general.

I still approve of the "Bring it into the bay. If it does *_anything_* you don't like, take it out." Because honestly, it's still one hell of a risk taking it into the landing bay at all. We the audience of course know that's Starbuck in there, and everyone on Galactica really really wants it to be her. But the Cylons have proven canny, and there's a certain "What if this is a raider loaded up with nukes?" that they have to wonder about, even if they know they're taking that chance anyway.

I mean, honestly? Tigh and Roslin were *right.* Now of course it all worked out and she was rescued. But doing the same math from the miniseries that this is for the species, we have to leave the sublight ships behind? Any pilot, other than Kara or Lee, would have been deemed acceptable losses by Adama. Roslin forced them to face that.

@@TroyConvers5000 Actually the upscaled fx on the current streaming versions hold up fairly nicely, although I’ll concede you really see the progress we’ve made on things like particle fx and physical modelling. When a ship explodes it can be a little jarring to modern eyes to see it break it into quite small number of parts. I also agree that Peter Wragg and his team did an amazing job on RD with an often miniscule budget, and who doesn’t love a quality miniature shot (I miss miniatures so much). But B5 churned out tonnes of FX shots per episode on a similarly lacklustre budget with infant tech and at the time it was truly cool to see. I stand by my Orville comments though. Each to their own, but I really tried to give it a fair shake when it came out, sticking with it for the entire first season but really struggled with it. It never seemed to able to make up its mind as to whether it was a Seth McFarlane comedy/loving Star Trek parody, or a genuinely earnest Star Trek homage/sci-fi. Every time it jarringly pivoted from a lowest common denominator penis gag to a genuine attempt at answering some big philosophical question I was left with whiplash and shouting “What ARE you?!” at the TV 😂 That’s not an unfair point about Blake 7, I was never a fan but see what you’re saying about a pre-B5 sci-fi series with a through line. That said, the BBC pioneered a lot of stuff that took US television a while to catch on to, and I was more talking about the US self-contained episodes syndicated series model. I will say though, for someone who claims B5s CGI has now rendered it “unwatchable” for modern audiences, Blake 7 made the worst FX shot in B5 look like Villeneuve’s Dune 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, was only after a bit of light hearted fun and gentle sparring, and something in your tone seemed a bit put out so I’ll return to my corner now. Although question my encyclopaedic knowledge of sci-fi at thy peril friends haha! Much love

I process Adama's behavior as "TV gonna drama". Kinda like Starbuck being able to outfly Apollo in a ship whose controls were completely unsuited and unfamiliar to her, while his was like an extension of his body. That said, still a great episode. If it hasn't happened yet I'm sure it will soon. You'll probably get bombarded by people saying not to watch the intro clips as they contain "spoilers."... The whole point of it is to get the viewer excited for what's coming and make you question what you just saw. I personally believe a reactor should attempt to watch the show in it's intended viewing format when possible. So I hope you continue to watch the intro segment. When the show first came out they were such a cool part of it. But today's viewing audience is so obsessed with the idea of spoilers that many pretty much demonize this aspect of the show. It seems like a fairly obvious thing to say but among the many things this show does right is continuity of character. I can imagine a lesser series thinking they already handled the Adama family drama since they have more or less reconciled. It was 2 years though and it's only been a fraction of that time since they talked and Lee is still getting to know his dad again during a situation that doesn't allow a lot of time to have a chat. He's adjusting to a reality where he isn't always angry with him. You only get to know someone by talking to them so while it might seem like a strange question for a son to ask a father that's a dynamic they're both trying to get used to during a time when they're also pilot and commander. No such thing as a strange question or a simple answer.

Oh, and a little hint/challenge: the headcount in the opening credits gets updated every episode, and doesn't include any humanoid cylon agents in the fleet, only humans. The headcount in President Roslin's office aboard Colonial 1 also gets updated as the series goes on, but as characters they don't have the information to exclude the Boomers, the Dorals, etc... So, if you make a note of the number in the opening credits, and you see the whiteboard on Colonial 1, you can get a rough estimate of how many cylons there are in the fleet.

Yeah, worst thing you can do is ask for a callsign. It tends to be an in-joke among your squadron about something you fucked up doing at some point. There's a military adventure book I read years ago where someone on a carrier asked for a callsign and made the request that it wasn't something stupid like "Dog Balls" or anything like that. So for the rest of the book, Dog Balls is a recurring part of the support team.

Generally, call signs are a lot like teenage or grade school nicknames, kinda almost clever and generally reminding the named about something they'd probably rather forget or at least not be reminded of. So it's kind've a privilege for someone in real-life to allow someone outside the military to refer to them by their call-sign. It's a way of distinguishing the family you go into war with from everybody else.

Hi! New to your channel, you two crack me up. Quick question though, I'm wondering why you have "Fair Use" on the preview screen. I understand you want to cover your butts against potential legal backlash but I've seen similar channels where they don't cover the preview with text and they seem to be going on strong.

Basically because without it, the videos will be (and have gotten) blocked. The enforcement of copyright blocks is... spotty at best. Some channels get a lot of passes, some get hit every single time.

Is anyone else getting confused in caring if Starbuck or Starbug get's back? God speed to both!

This show was one of the only shows me and my dad whole heartily finished together when I was younger and it’s still just as good as I remember
