This episode aired at the height of the Bush administration's use of waterboarding. The portrayal of torture was very pointed social commentary.

It was Leoben quoting scripture to her, that made the switch for her I think. And building that connection with her over that during their last conversation. Kara is one of the most religious people on the show, it’s just really subtlety done, like her preying for Lees soul during the mini series, and her asking the Gods for help when she was crash landed.

And the paranoia sets in. Also, I know it's been said before but the "War on Terror" in the US really informed quite a bit of the show and why characters reacted as they did.

One of my favorites of the whole series. I read Roslin putting Leoben out the airlock as an immediate reaction to him whispering "Adama is a Cylon," not her original plan. I believe she genuinely wished to negotiate his release in an attempt to make peace with the Cylons, and only chose to kill him when he tried to get inside her head.

Heh. =:o} They were also teasing us about possible connections with the original 1978 series. Is this simply an updated retelling of the same events... Or are the same basic events *actually* happening again? In the end the show didn't go there, but in this first season it was a definite option.

As a minor clarification on how long it was between the mini series and S1 - The mini series was first transmitted in December 2003. The UK got the worldwide premier of S1 due to a funding deal between Sky One (UK) and Sci-Fi (US), and S1 started airing October 2004 here. In the US it started airing January 2005. So it's closer to a year between pilot and first season than if you just look at the US transmission years - Either just under (UK) or just over (US).

I mean, to be fair, there were Twelve Colonies of Kobol. Our current day Earth has 8 billion people on it. Lets say the Colonies had fewer per planet, because you could move to another Colony, so maybe they average... 4 billion per colony? So their population would have been ... 48 billion, approximately? Down to just under fifty thousand humans remaining. That is an awful lot of deaths the Cylons are responsible for. It's not hard to see why Roslin is not about to let bygones be bygones.

It’s interesting that each iteration of each model is basically the same person but there are subtle differences to their personalities especially when two are operational at the same time like Sharon and definitely model Six. Differences that seem to become more pronounced the more individual life experiences they have. Similar to how clones are individuals in their own right separate from the host I imagine.

IMO Starbuck started to see Leobin as a person after he told her all that stuff about her mom. She kept up with the torture because it was her duty as a soldier to find the bomb. That's why she could have "such a switch" after he admitted there was no bomb.

The humans believe in several gods while the cyclone just believe in one god. A shorts series to watch is Caprica Which is before the cyclone war, but how they came to be and why they believe in just one god.

I love how first time viewers always ask "What does that mean?" when they hear "This has happened before." 😂 The biggest questions from this episode are: "Do Cylon souls go to Silicon Heaven?" and "How many lights did Leoben see?" 😉

Battlestar Dwarfica! ps: yeh .. obviously torture doesn't work (except as perverse entertainment for the torturer). The torturer doesn't know what's the truth. And the tortured will say whatever needed to stop the torture. So what confirms the torturers bias is best. Also .. if the subject is believed to be a machine .. why believe the machine is suffering under torture? It would have to be alive to feel torture, wouldn't it?

It is interesting (no spoiler), but in a lot of ways Funnylilgal reacts was real in a lot of ways in the same place as you two are. And now that she's on season 4, she's at a whole different place. Will be interesting to see your evolution watching the show. Her end reaction was her all along, and he was right the military training dehumanizes the enemy and she overcome that. I think his knowing her childhood trauma helped her overcome that.

You've fought god to a draw. What do you do to be closer to god? Become indistinguishable from god. Become just like god. All the flaws, all the complexity. And then worship god's god. They've been becoming deliberately more human, in their rebellion. Becoming more like their creator/enemy -- to understand and pass? To be more human than the humans, and thus superior?

[NODS] The original 1978 series used a lot of elements from Mormon theology. Some of those are carried over into Ron Moore's version, but re-mixed/re-interpreted.

If the classical monotheistic model so many of us were raised in is to be believed, "the creator" tends to be depicted as a vengeful parent figure who demands unquestioning worship and obedience under threat of eternal punishment. There's really no difference. Is the higher pressure one side pushing, or is the lower pressure the other side sucking? Answer: both! If "sucking" means anything at all, it simply means creating an area of lower pressure, towards which things will then be drawn thanks to the higher pressure the other side. And that's exactly what happens when the airlock door opens: Air behind him escapes into space, causing the pressure behind him to drop. Of course the pressure in front *also* begins to drop, but not quite as fast. The pressure gradient across his body, front to back, is what gets him moving. Your best chance of *not* going straight out the airlock, by the way, is to press yourself flat against whatever surface is furthest away from the outer door, and hold on tight to anything fixed. Obviously it helps if you also have a space suit on, or your victory against the laws of physics will be short-lived (as will you!). =:o}

I wouldn't get to wrapped up in them using gendered language referring to the cyclon god. I believe a more accurate term would be a Cylon celestrial being. Using the term being as a pronoun.

Disagree on torture doesn't work. Its more that torture is almost always unreliable. But it can work to a point. And is depending on who its done to. And Also what your wanting from them. Its still wromg and shouldnt be done.
