When I first hear how fast they were playing this, I was really concerned and did not think anyone could humanly keep up. Well she did it.. and flawlessly. Each note is crisp and distinct. Simply incredible!!!
Actually, I wish my orchestra had picked up the pace when I had to perform this, as it is much easier to accomplish at this pace then when it is done slower. I loved to sing along with her on this amazing piece.
I know it’s fast: I was on stage, in the orchestra. If I’m honest, I was shocked when we first rehearsed, but you know what? - it was electric; it was IN the moment; it was fun. To top it off, she’s an INCREDIBLE singer, and it was a real pleasure to work with Kevin Edusei. I’m incredibly proud of this performance - not just because I think it was “good,” but also because we had a conductor who would ACTUALLY take the risk of a fast tempo; we had a singer who COULD take the risk; we had a collection of fellow musicians to boldly go on that journey with them. Rather than thinking of it as “good, “bad, “right,” “wrong,” how about thinking of it as it is - an approach different to the norm that, regardless as whether one likes it or not, elicits a response.
Agreed. Also, I LOVE it at this tempo-it's a dynamic fresh take on such a classic piece. And let's be honest, music isn't like a museum-it's no one's job to preserve music and keep it immaculate and unevolving. Part of the beauty of live classical music is that it's being interpreted by real people in real-time, and they can bring fresh new ideas to something. Also, that orchestra and Jeanine De Bique sound AMAZING. What a clear delicate sound!
I thought this was so electric when I heard it on the radio. I'm not that familiar with the piece, but when I heard it performed at a concert recently, it felt so flat compared to this!
I come back to this performance often because I am completely amazed at both it's precision and energy. As an amateur, I've sung in the chorus of "Messiah" on many occasions and heard a number of variations of this aria. Between soprano Jeanine De Bique and Chineke!, this just worked. I believe that Handel himself would have been immensely pleased!
Jeanine and I went to the same secondary school and she is part of the reason why I am pursuing a career in Classical music! I first heard her in 2005 when my school participated in a choral competition in Austria! She had already graduated but she came back to do a soprano solo. It was so beautiful! She's such an amazing singer ^_^
What a stunning voice! Jeanine’s expression and the clarity of her intonation is phenomenal. What I cannot understand is why I have not heard of her before today!
@@blacksantaria3642 Right …. and that's why she didn't actually do this recording and we aren't actually watching this. And why nobody associates Leontyne Price with Lincoln Center. shop.pbs.org/the-opera-house-dvd/product/TOPH401 BTW you might want to shoot some WD-40 into your caps lock key.
I was crying faster than she was singing at one point. I adore The Messiah and have rarely heard such a beautiful rendition. I sent it to all the ladies in my Bible study small group since we're studying the passage in Isaiah "His name shall be called...the Prince of Peace." I can't wait for them to experience it! Thanks for sharing this, BBC!!! Brava, Jeanine!
Jermaine Woodard Jr. I love that this video came back into my recommendeds and I scrolled down to see your name. And you know I love you too! I’ll see you Sunday. And people, see if you can find a recording of this man singing. He’s incredible.
My whole family is in awe. Those perfectly clear and steady long E sounds, the energy and passion of the delivery, the gorgeous tone of her voice... All I can say is, move over Renee!
She really is that incredibly good for sooo many reasons. Her voice, her stage presence, her passion, etc. This is the first I've heard her. I'm going to listen to more. She's amazing!
I love Jeanine! Wonderful singer and person. She’s from Trinidad and Tobago and we’re proud of her! I listen to this performance repeatedly. I don’t need to comment on her virtuoso performance. It speaks for itself....

Unbelievable! A glorious dramatic coloratura! Perfect control of the melismas, amazingly intricate ornamentation! I never heard this aria at quite this Allegro Molto tempo before, but it suited the Soprano's artistry perfectly.
@@jjh2456 I agree she's a lyric coloratura rather than dramatic. However, her voice definitely has a very powerful core to it, unlike so many lyric coloraturas, it's easy to see how she can be labeled as dramatic. I'm very impressed with Jeannine. Never heard her before.
The tempo is fast because she can handle the coloratura at that speed. Her agility is unbelievable ! (Cecilia Bartoli often takes arias much faster than they're usually done. WHY? Because she can) Has anyone seen such passion in an Oratorio aria?
The drama, the passion, the unsurpassed artistry that Jeanine de Bique brings to Handel's "Rejoice" is without comparison to anyone that has sung it before. She will be remembered for centuries as one of the greatest singers that ever graced humanity with her exquisitely unique virtuosity and talent💫🌟🌟🌟!
With blinding speed and agility, this dynamic artist/vocalist blew the socks off Rejoice. Her tone and the quality of her voice is rich beyond measure. What a pleasure to listen to her sing. Let's hope we hear much more of her brilliance. Brava my sister. Loved looking at the orchestra members behind her marvel at her as she sang - they were pleasantly captured by her stunning virtuosity.
oh, oh. so beautiful, i have tears streaming down my face. twenty years i've sung the messiah, and i'll never be anything like this sumptuous and exquisite.
An absolutely wonderful performance. It was a wonderful decision for it to be performed faster than most singers can manage. With her extreme virtuosity and confident control of her instrument, singing it at this speed shows off her voice for the blessing it is. Stunning preformance.
DucksDeLucks l couldn't agree more. At this speed the conductor has sacrificed the beauty of the legato line. Oh well, plenty of better versions out there to listen to.
Ridiculously too fast! The point of Messiah is to sing the praises of Jesus - not to engage in some vulgar "Trinidad's Got Talent"-style vocal competition! I am not a Christian, fortunately: if I were, this travesty would make me very angry. As it is, I am simply disappointed, though not surprised.
Wow! That was perhaps the best and most awesome performance of Handel’s Rejoice that I have ever heard. Given that Handel himself is reputed to have said after writing the Hallelujah chorus, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself.”, I think he might be proud of this performance because Jeanine and Chineke! really lift the biblical text from the page and make it alive which is what the whole Messiah oratorio was about and supposed to do. Well done to all involved in this masterpiece performance!
She was born to sing this solo. Absolutely stunning. Probably one of the best performances of this there ever was. Her voice is just so perfect for this music.
Her talent, her beauty, her TEETH! So beautiful!! I live for her smile and when she opens her mouth and I see those beautiful teeth! There's nothing like a natural beautiful smile, and she looks so great singing. (not everyone does!)
The voice of this century is now here. Absolutely and undeniably the best I've heard. Congratulations Miss Jeanine, and I look forward to hearing more of you and hopefully see you perform.
Everything a brilliant soprano should be--joyful, beautiful tone, dead-on pitch, and having fun doing it. Super fast!!! Going to hear her live tomorrow evening with the LA Master Chorale (with whom I used to perform) in Brahms' Requiem. So excited. You made me tear up.
The conductor knew what he was doing: he was pushing her to shine, and she did so brilliantly! I’ve never heard this piece performed so quickly and was shocked at the outset at the tempo he chose-but man am I pleased to see her not only keep up with it, but own it!
After a lot of comparsion Ive decided this is really my favourite interpretation. The ornamentation at the end alone, like damn I really do feel like the lord is coming unto me, if ya catch my drift.
What a voice! I got goose bumps right through the rendition because I could not control the emotions that I felt. That emotion is monumentally imbued in her clinical virtuosity.
This is an incredible singer, just discovered her.I will never understand the need of the „Tempo du Thalys“ of so many conductors.Let us singers breathe please ,i always think. But she mastered it with incredible presision and wonderful technique and expression.Brava brava, absolutely wonderful💝💝💝💝
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.
I love her personality and charisma. She sung it beautifuly but even more i was impressed how she acted... Strong, powerful and joyful at the same time.
OH YES! BRAVO! LOVE the pace of how the orchestra and the vocalist set this aria up and presented it. She is a magnificent job! This was one of the most difficult of all of the aria's from Handle's Messiah that I have ever had to perform! Again, bravo!
