Hidden Sounds of Coastal Arcades
Between the Ears
Piers and arcades are distinctly English shrines to the act of play, which dot the English coastline. Steeped in heritage, they still hold a place in many hearts to this day. Through a series of binaural recordings, interviews and musical composition, sound artist Frazer Merrick explores the infectious energy of Walton Pier in north Essex and uncovers its hidden sounds, including those of the people, the place and even the electromagnetic fields produced by the machines. Composed of three movements, Hidden Sounds of Coastal Arcades is based upon the architecture of the place, beginning in the bustling arcade, then moving into the cacophonous fairground and finishing above the water at the end of the pier itself. This piece is best experienced on headphones.

Great episode. I wondered if you might also have the edition of "Between the Ears" broadcast on 19th October 1993. This featured a rare interview with the playwright Barry Bermange. Have searched extensively for this, but no luck as yet. Any help locating a copy of the interview would be much appreciated. Here's the BBC Genome listing for the episode: genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/51b13222e2c04bc19770706e7a77ee5e

Hi David, only just seen this comment. Can’t find it on the BBC site to download but I will check to see if I’ve got it stored away somewhere.

James Ah, thank you; I appreciate you taking the time to check for this! It seems to be a pretty rare episode to track down.

David Huggins is it possible that the interview is in one of these tracks: www.discogs.com/Delia-Derbyshire-Barry-Bermange-Inventions-For-Radio-The-Dreams/release/6155385 ? I’m sure I’ve heard these somewhere...

James unfortunately it’s not on there- the vinyl disc listed on Discogs contains the Dreams programme itself (from 1964), but not the interview with Bermange (which was recorded specially for Between the Ears in 1993, when they repeated The Dreams).

Both safe for work. Just take a look at the doofus in the orange t-shirt in the second one. Christ knows why they gave him so much time... even more than the Professor of the App. who’s behind it! Both are very short too. More details if you want them. 😉 Not sure why some of my comments aren’t showing but I’d also be happy to send everyone an individual email explaining the delay (“Family issues” or something) if you wanted to email them to me / WhatsApp them etc. That might help the stress levels
