Happy Days - Children of the Stones
Writer and comedian Stewart Lee explores the ground breaking television series Children of the Stones and examines its special place in the memories of those children who watched it on its initial transmission in a state of excitement and terror.
The programme includes contributions from series co-creator Jeremy Burnham, singer Julian Cope, cast members and fans.
In 1977 HTV launched the revolutionary children's television drama telling the story of an astrophysicist and his son who arrive in the village of Milbury to study ancient stones. The residents greet each other with the phrase 'Happy day' and the community is held in a strange captivity by the psychic forces generated by the circle of giant Neolithic stones which surround it.
Filmed at Avebury in Wiltshire, it is a strangely atmospheric production with the baleful, discordant wailing voices of the incidental music increasing the tension.
The story, involving a temporal paradox and issues of individuality and community assimilation thematically challenged the after-school audience, which included Stewart Lee.
In this documentary Lee returns to Avebury to discuss the serial's impact, examine its influence on him and explore the history and secrets of the ancient stones.
1970s kids may have dived behind the sofa during Doctor Who, but it was Children of the Stones that gave them nightmares.
The series is frequently cited by those who remember it as one of the scariest things they saw as children.

It was thanks to this broadcast by Stewart, that I discovered the series in the first place. He has a vital point about how drama then was something for a whole family to watch, rather than it being specifically aimed at an age group. Television shows now seem to be specific and exclusive, therefore now, with more channels and divisiveness being encouraged, do family units actually sit down together the same way? I can remember our 4 person family would often all sit together to watch certain shows, (even and especially the 5min things like Paddington,Wombles or Willo The Wisp on BBC1 before the evening news at 5.40pm). Now? Kids are on computers and tablets, some of us in different rooms and the social aspect of television and togetherness is all a very rare thing. On a positive note, we can all (in my family group at least) share one or two shows to have a nice bit of together time. I think we all need as families, maybe consider putting down the devices and be with one another. Recent times with CV19 have underlined to us, just how important regular social interaction really is

Yes! As children, we would listen to to the Beatles with our parents, while dad smoked cigarettes and lifted weights. And we loved it! It was nice, the whole family together, enjoying the same music.

@A CAPPS With my Family, we used to sit down as a group and all watch "Quantum Leap" - it appealed to both my parents for the story idea of righting a wrong before Sam Becket "moved on", just as much as it appealed to my Brother and I for the Science Fiction elements. Miss those times. :-(

Timeslip, Ace of Wands, Freewheelers, The Tomorrow People, Catweazle, Escape into Night, The Jensen Code, COTS....I was young enough to watch them all and be amazed by the writing, the stories etc. I recently bought the COTS soundtrack LP because of that fab eerie music, that I've never forgotten (and having the DVD to assist me!) and loud, it's still good today. I even went down to Avebury to see the stones for myself....Loved it :) Gareth Thomas (RIP) signed my COTS DVD sleeve at a Blakes 7 day, and we talked about COTS and he was delighted that COTS had been remembered and believed the story held its own (even if the clothes and hair were out dated! - His own words to me). I often wondered what ever happened to the painting 'Quad non est'???

Thanks for the comment. One day I hope to go to Avebury myself. A lot of those titles are well-written up by @scarredforlife on Twitter in their two volumes of books currently available: vol 1: the 70’s and vol 2: the 80’s. Well worth buying. Regards

I do wonder the same myself… reminds me of The Goodies never being repeated up until very recently. That was rumoured to be because someone right at the top hated it and wouldn’t allow it to be re-run *sigh * Regards

Most of us who grew up in this era and watched kids TV would go to school and talk about the shows the following day. However, I do not recall myself or my school friends really discussing 'COTS' at the time because I don't think we were able to compute it properly! We were too busy trying to figure out what the hell it was and why it scared us! 'COTS' was WAY more than just a brilliant TV show. Thank you Stewart Lee and all involved.

Julian Cope would trade his anonymity, and his personality, for a sense of family? He could just join the army.
