28 degrees here. But no snow. Big game seasons are over, so its back to my fun rifles/reloading in smaller than .308 bores.

I put the female side of Velcro on my defector so it stopped beating up my brass. I also had to file and polish my lugs because the brass was fretting scratched up pretty bad. All good now.

Weak ejection, failure to pick up the next round and lock back on the last fired round. BCA determined the gas hole on the barrel was too narrow. BCA uppers have a fixed (non adjustable gas block.)

Bought a 22” stainless heavy barrel upper and 20” socom version of the 243 BCAs. I had to return the 20” version because accuracy wasn’t acceptable. It was replaced after an 8 month wait. Both uppers shoot .3” at 10” yards with handloads. I never played with OAL to see if I could tighten my groups even more.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I’ve only tried light bullets so far in both. The 20” socom I have used H4895 and varget with 60 grain Seirra HPs. Did ladder tests with both and all groups shot under an inch from min to max loads! Best group came from 42.2 grains with H4895. The 22” heavy barrel fluted shot best with 55 grain Nosler ballistic tips. Two loads shot at .3” at 100 yards. The .3” loads were 45.5 grains of H4895 and 46 grains of Varget. Both barrel like both powders. Some day I’ll try heavy bullets in them but they only have been tested with the two light bullets above so far. I have a lot of other .243 projectiles on hand but wanted a flat shooting load to compensate for the shorter barrels. I love the 70 NBT’s in my 26” 700 heavy barrel and 90 ballistic tips for deer hunting in that rifle and my 600. They prefer imr4831 with the 70 and 90 Noslers.

I have three BCA uppers. One centerfire, a .458 SOCOM and two rimfire a 17HMR and a 22 Magnum. The 458 took some magazine modification to feed which has nothing to do with the upper and it's a standard charging handle model not a side handle. The bolt head seemed a little off however it worked fine but damaged the case head somewhat it would have most likely worn some. I ordered a bolt head from Tromix anyway and the brass has no damage I tuned four magazines and used the Tromix followers in them made a huge difference. The rimfire versions had a couple of problems one might be attributed to my lower it's a Ruger. The charging handle when firing will blow back and strike the receiver and after only a couple of rounds loosens the hex screw and bends it making it useless. The spring and buffer they supply is part of the problem and also the Ruger lower. The buffer tube on the Ruger must be slightly longer allowing the supplied buffer to recoil further rearward and allowing the charging handle to strike the receiver. I did some measuring and confirmed this so I made a shim on my lathe and drop it in the buffer tube before installing the spring and buffer when attaching the rimfire versions. Dropping a quarter in there might have done the same thing I never tried it but it looks like about the same size. With the spacer installed the BCG handle cannot come back far enough in the tube to strike the receiver and the buffers soft nose contacts the rear of the tube dampening the recoil. I also have excessive case head bulging with the supplied buffer and spring especially the 17 HMR. I won't go into detail how I solved this but it can be done with different weights and buffer springs with the supplied buffer. I greatly reduced the recoil and case damage ultimately and also accuracy with the 17 HMR by trying different weights in the buffer. The 22 Magnum took different weight but was able to tune the recoil impulse and made a big difference suppressed.

Actually I put together a .458 SOCOM on a Savage bolt action years ago. It took some tinkering to make the magazines feed at the time lots of AR's were being built for this round so there was plenty of information on forums. My bolt 458 is really a nice rig I have used it for feral hog control here in Texas. When BCA got theirs in production I picked one up they are a lot less expensive than Tromix or Wilson Combat samples. Accuracy is good with it I still prefer the Savage it is a lot heavier and has a McGowen turbo brake on their barrel. Before I bought the rimfires I researched them pretty hard and found lots of discussions on a couple of forums and went from there. I discovered the problem of the handles striking the receiver on my own however. The weights and spring mods from a forum though. These are blowback operated they need to be buffered as such. @@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009

Dave, looks like BCA did you well. I have been a bit leary about the non-standard AR-10 calibers. You put my mind at ease. I think I may have a build in my future, especially with the Christmas deals. I love your channel because you unashamedly share your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. I also love it because I feel like you are a reloader for the common guy. There are some good channels out there, but they go down rabbit holes with reloading that are sometimes hard to understand. To add, you also answer posts and e-mail. Thank you so much for passing on your faith and knowledge to others. God bless you and yours. Have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Seasons Greetings to You. What was the delayed click noise I heard after firing?
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 6 месяцев назад
The trigger reset. With an AR-10 and a light trigger pull weight, your trigger finger needs a complete follow through hold to the end stop, this prevents the recoil from re engaging a fast trigger reset due to the semi auto gas operated fast cycling and reset of the trigger. Failure to hold the trigger firmly back during the recycling and trigger reset can engage too relaxed trigger finger and therefore create a double fire or sometimes called a bump fire. The trigger discipline is completely different on a semi auto gas impingement rifle than a manual operated bolt action whereby on the bolt action, manual cycling is resetting the trigger.
