Magnetospeed Sporter. What it does and what it does not do.

Replying to multiple comments regarding the use of the Magnetospeed to gather numerical data for consistency of both factory and reloaded ammunition . I hope this demonstration and explanation will help others understand the difference between, "Gathering relevant data for precision with the Magnetospeed first, vs fine tuning for accuracy and precision without ."

Thanks Dave, a interesting video and result! My 2c worth is this, the only purpose of the chronograph is, as you said, just to collect data. You could have shot into the side of a hill or not even bothered to get down into the rifle, the data would be the same! The fact that with the magnetospeed attached messes with barrel harmonics, is in this case of no consequence what so ever! All the best from Dorset England 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍

Thanks Clive for your input. I like to see if the data collected by the magneto speed corresponds to the group size or lack thereof. Discrepancies in groups, vertical stringing, flyers and even oblong holes on target can sometimes be answered immediately by the corresponding chrono numbers.

Thank you for explaining the difference between accuracy and precision better than I could. Barrel harmonics are a little bit of magic. I bought a Savage mark 2 to compete in my local rimfire match. I played with a shaft locking collar on the barrel and I was being very competitive and winning some matches against guys shooting $1500+ rifles. To boot I was using $6 tac22 and they are using expensive match ammo. It is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Very enjoyable video. Some thought, a barrel tunner is about the same weight and proven to affect group size of a well developed load. Anything weighing down the muzzle will act the same way. From the manufacturer, they recommend to load develope without it then use it to verify velocities. I too have seen it both not affect accuracy and also drastically effect accuracy. For what I do, a 100$ Wiser Precision mount is an easy buy. Set's up faster and eliminates the question
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
Just a quick question...You're a custom rifle maker, so you would be right guy to ask. I have seen, (for some guy's) the Satterlee method of load development requires the use of a chronograph, before final load tweaking, they too while shooting, are unconcerned about POI and focus on nodes, (flat spots in velocity). For my process, it is simply to verify powder, brass, primer and bullet combo relative to the "Book" for similar velocity and pressure sighs and move on from there. I sorta figure the bullet makers are the ballisticians and I just verify for my individual rifle.

You Sir, are telling it like it is. And, You ARE Correct. It's weird how people think and what they get into their heads. I think You are about like I am. I can see you take care of Your stuff. There ain't a scratch on that rifle. I used to shop at Hogdon Powder store South of Kansas City. I'd buy alot of my reloading supplies from them back then. I'm thinking of trying to get one of those Magnetospeed units for my use I can't see 600+ dollars for some of those other units on the market. Another GREAT JOB on this video too.

Thank you Dave, you proved my point exactly. The bayonet attached to the barrel affects the harmonics and therefore affects the point of impact. But like you said if you are not concerned with where your shots are hitting it makes no difference. You can adjust your shot groups to hit your target with the scope. I just prefer a stand alone chronograph that does not have an effect on the harmonics or the point of impact. It saves time, money, ammo, and money not having to sight in twice. But that's why they make both chocolate and vanilla, people like different things. Just because methods are different does not make one of them wrong. I enjoy your videos keep up the good work. You are appreciated. Kindest Regards,

I too have a magnetospeed sporter to get velocity data. When I do my load works up, I generally dont care about velocity. I am looking for the tightest group I can get. Once I have that then I load some validation loads and then put the magnetospeed on and get velocity data.

The chrono may change the P.O.I. but you get the speed with it on then test for the accuracy with it off. If you have a problem with that buy the doppler radar.

What do you think of the labradar? I know they are quite expensive over $500 but caldwell is supposedly going to release a similar product for around $300, i have used a labradar and once the trigger mech is installed it works like a charm
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
J B, I cannot give and opinion on the Labradar other than my eliminating factors of the cost, limited battery life and the extras needed that I have seen the reviews on RU-vid . I had a Chrony Beta for years and would spend 1/2 an hour getting the height and shooting lane aligned with the rifle and the target. It worked but I was constantly annoyed with the error messages. The Magnetospeed definitely fits my more mobile shooting needs.

God bless you too Dave. I use the magnetospeed as well . Is your barrel floated ? Mine has the pressure point ( weatherby wilderness 2506) struggling with finding an accurate factory load so I floated the barrel but still not going well. Decided on barnes 100 grain. Cold bore shot is right on 1 1/2 inch high at 100 but second and third shots start climbing up to 2 1/2 to 3 inches so I added the pressure point back to see if it would help, wanted to shoot again today but is raining. We get rain here lol
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
Thanks Sandy. Your Weatherby should be a shooter. I would gather your targets that correspond to each individual factory offering you used. Then contact Weatherby and they will fix or replace your rifle, because they gave a 1 MOA guarantee. You will have to pay for shipping, but they do stand by their rifles.

I used my sporter to get velocity of ammunition to be able to calculate ballistic drop of 300 m and 350 m and 100 m. For my 30.06 is zero for 200 m. I have recently made some reloads of 4 different weight that would achieve minimum of 2800 fps to max of 2900 fps. I also use IR gun measure barrel temperature what wait 5 minutes per each shot and 15 minutes after reloading. I want to see which load gives tightest group within desired velocity range so I can reload. Then zero scope with ammunition that gave best consistency. Reason I am doing this someone I have to take 300 m shot. Most of time within 100 to 200 m, and occasionally at 300 m.

Thanks for your question. The Nosler 100 grain was the last "sight in load" that is why they were closer to the bullseye. But to answer your question specifically, yes I have developed a more precise and accurate load with the 110 grain Nosler Accubond, used for hunting only.

Do you find that the magnetospeed is effected by weather (bright sunny, overcast) where it will not record under certain conditions?
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
No, the only errors occurred if the bayonet was too close or too far from the muzzle and if small very fast projectiles gave an error code that the sensitivity setting was not correct. I am on my second bayonet because muzzle blast will eventually erode the sensors.
@cbsbass4142
@cbsbass4142 Год назад
I want a chrono to get the velocity of the loads, not shooting groups. The chronograph is not for measuring groups, that's what calipers are for. Just like when I'm hunting, I'm probably not going to be shooting from a covered bench off of a bipod or sandbags only when the weather suits me.

Doubt you see this but if you do you are pronouncing hornady right. Raised in gi Nebraska where the plant is. That being said I do still hate their products. While they are pin point accurate I have seen way to many fail on impact and will not recommend any of their products for hunting.

Yes and thanks. Some people get irritated when I say Horna-(day) and not Horna-(dee). I too have had SST bullets fail, that being fast expansion, jacket separation and no pass through but this mainly happens with high velocity at close range. Other than that they make very accurate bullets.
