Hardtack was used as rations during the civilwar in the u.s, it was normally cooked before eating, normally in you guessed it pig fat. Hardtack was a staple because of its long lasting properties, it was both hated and loved by both sides of the conflict because of how long it lasted and how hard it was to eat, there are entire meals that can be made using hardtack that came about because soldiers wanted to eat but couldn't not break there teeth trying.

My mom taught me to make baked apples the microwave. Just cut out most of the core, stuff the hole with brown sugar and butter, then microwave until soft (2-3 minutes)
