Be CAREFUL🚨Where You Pitch Your TENT! | Climbers Encounter 

I live near Portland so am very familiar with Mt. Hood. In the late 70’s my husband and I were hiking at Mt St Helens on a day hike- while in the area called “Ape Canyon” we felt like we were being “watched” - made the hairs on our arms stand up. ( This was about 6 years before the mountain erupted in 1980).

We have to get you to 100,000!! This show is 100% deserves it and a lot more! Let’s start sharing Chris to our friends? As he “ keeps hiking “ we should keep sharing!

This reminds me of a very creepy experience that I had, while camping at the Clear Creek state campground in the foothills of Mt. Hood, in 2012. I'll try to make this short. My ex-fiance and I went camping at a tucked away Clear Creek state campground in August 2012. This is a fairly primitive campground without running water or many amenities at all, other than a restroom. No camp hosts or Park Rangers on site. Upon arriving, we noted how few people there were in the campground. There were, I believe 15 camp sites and only three spots were occupied, including ours. We viewed this as a bit odd, being it was a weekend in the heat of the summer and in a state campground, with a pristine "clear" creek running right along the campground. Definitely felt like there should have been more people there that time of the week and year. Obviously, we pretty much had our pick of camp sites and we picked a nice site right there next to the creek. That area had a handful of wild cows that would wander around throughout the campground and surrounding areas. There was a log bridge going across the creek, right next to our campsite, with a clear fielded area on the other side of the creek, surrounded by state forest. I took advantage of the cows presence by harvesting dried "cow pies" from the fielded area to throw on the fire, as a way to keep the mosquitos at bay. We relaxed for a while, at dinner and got settled into our tent around 10:00 that night. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of footsteps in the crunching dried leaves around our tent. I looked at my watch and it was about 2:10AM. It was pitch black, the tree canopy blocked the moon, so I couldn't see a thing. I listened and began to smell something putrid, rotting, like a dead animal that's been sitting around a week or so. The tent I had was a large tent for eight people and I was position right in the center of the tent, with my feet at the flap opening. This tent has a screen vent at the bottom center, which was right where my head was positioned. I'm listening for more footsteps and trying not to gag from the stench when I hear something sniffing at the ground vent, right there above my head. Then whatever it was stood up and let out a deep sigh that sounded just like that of a human. Deep inhale and a forceful exhale. Then I hear some leaves crunching, followed by more sniffing at the vent by my head. It didn't sound like fast, rapid sniffing that a dog does, it was more deep inhale, quick exhale, deep inhale, quick exhale....again, it sounded like a person to me. Then they stand up and start sighing some more as if they are weighing out their options or something, deciding what they are going to do. This is before I got my concealed carry permit and began carrying a firearm on a daily basis, but I did have a Ka-Bar knife and bear spray with me. I quietly slipped on my shoes, put on my headlamp, grabbed my knife and bear spray and slowly unzipped the tent flap, while holding the zipper tight in my fingers to keep it as quiet as possible. Mind you, my fiance was still passed out at this point. I used what night vision I had to scan the front of the tent, which was clear. I got one foot out of the tent, as I simultaneously turned on my headlamp and whipped around to view the back side of the tent. I didn't see anything at all as I walked around our tent and scanned the 50 or so yard perimeter around the campsite, as well as the log bridge and field on the other side. It was only about 10 seconds total between when I last heard it sighing behind the tent and when I exited the tent and I was being pretty damn quiet, but whatever was out there was not around when I stepped out. The ground was very dry, hard and full of leaves, so no tracks anywhere. The stench of rotting meat signified that it was a carnivore or omnivore, which ruled out a wild cow, since they are herbivores and don't really throw off those types of foul odors. The foot steps sounded bipedal and the breathing pattern and deep sighs didn't sound like a bear or cougar. Wasn't a raccoon, because the deep sighs came from several feet up in the air, signifying that what ever it was stood up and was several feet tall. My thought at the time was that it was a person, which kind of freaked me out and prompted me to stoke the fire and stay up the rest of the night. The thing is, I've never smelled that kind of rotting dead animal stench from a person before, because most people brush their teeth once in a while, right? I also don't know how a person could have gotten away so fast, without making a sound, I mean the whole 50-yards or so around our site was cleared, no nearby brush or anywhere that a person could hide and I immediately scanned the area with my light after stepping out of the tent. All I really know is that it stood on two legs, several feet tall, was a meat-eater and capable of covering long distances very fast and without making a sound in doing so. I remember this vividly, like it just happened yesterday, I didn't imagine this and, to be honest, that's the last time that I've camped in a tent, I now sleep in the back of my Jeep when I camp. The freaky thing to me is that I just don't know what it was. I really wanted to get the hell out of there, but being the man I am, I didn't want to alarm my fiance or let her know that I was scared. She was having fun and seemed to like the place, since she had been there before with her family. So, we did stay one more night and it was understandably a restless night for me, but that night was uneventful and quiet. There was only one other camper there that last day, a young couple that had just pulled in and set up camp. I was just happy to have someone else there, after the experience I had the night before, but I heard their SUV leave at around 3:00AM, that very night, so I'm not sure if they also got spooked by something and got out of there, or if they just had a long day of driving to do and wanted to get an early start. I'm not sure if any of you have seen the horror movies "The Hills Have Eyes" or "Wrong Turn", but this experience and this campground definitely gave me those vibes. I tried researching that campground and surrounding area online when I got home, to try to learn some history on that place and couldn't really find much, unfortunately. I wondered if something bad had happened there at some point, or if the place was known for being haunted or something else that would explain why it was so empty and possibly give me a clue as to what was outside our tent that night. It remains a mystery though. Pretty weird. *EDIT: I will add that I've always been a pretty avid hiker and camper and, by the time of this event, I was pretty well used to the forest "bumps in the night", tree sounds, wildlife sounds, etc. This was something different to me though. I pretty much camp for a living, so I don't really "GO OUT" camping too much these days, but I have since learned that, while the woods aren't necessarily a place to fear, there are some strange things and occurrences out there that most people aren't really aware of. Unexplainable events and encounters have always occurred in the forests from time to time, but these sort of happenings do seem to be on the rise for whatever reason, as time goes on. I do still DEFINITELY feel safer in the woods than I do the city though, for sure.

Today my daughter and I made it 25 miles to the local campgrounds and back home, this time with my new pack, extra food, extra water and we did better than last week! You're such an inspiration Chris! Keep up the great work friend! So scary, I actually used to live near Mount Hood for a few years. Kinda glad I never camped there, lol.

Love your stories! I day hiked ZigZag 20+ yrs., and up and down the Cascade Mountain range. I live in OR and used to do alot of camping and hiking. I've had some scary things happen, but never seen anything. A friend an I decided to camp in the Timothy Lake area...at night 🤔. We collected wood with the help of the car lights and "Something" waited until we got really close, as we found a little pile under some bushes. Stomped really loud. As in you could feel it through the ground. I fell back, grabbed my friend by the shirt, and we ran to the car. I've been in much scarier situations and never felt that type of terror. Something was around our tent also, but that's a whole other story 😅

I love your shows! I grew up in the mountains of Western NC in the 1970s/80s. We were poor but happy and I spent my days out in the woods. At 10, we (brother and friend) were trusted to take off for 3 days in the mountains. We would take rifles, snare wire, finishing gear, camping gear, etc. and run/camp all over the mountains. We only took a few cans of food because we knew we would get fish, rabbits, etc. I now live in very crowed Okinawa, Japan and miss the mountains so much. This summer I am going home and have rented a cabin at the top of a mountain in the Cherokee Reservation that requires a 4x4 to get to. I can’t wait! I am an amateur Sasquatch researcher and use the evidence of it’s existence to teach critical thinking, using credible sources, note-taking, presenting, etc. to my fifth grade students at Bob Hope Elementary on Kadena Air Force base in Okinawa. I have information pamphlets, books, and a world map of the similar type creature names around the world, four footprint casts, and a knuckle cast displayed in my classroom. The students love it as it is our class themes and teaches them essential standards in a fun and interesting way. Every year, Dr. Jeff Meldrum does a live Google Meet with my class. Jeff presents the evidence from the scientific side. William Jennings (was mentored by John Greene and Rene Dahinden) also does a live meet with my students. Will gives it from the field researcher side and he had an “underwear changing moment” (his quote) that got him into field research over 50 years ago. I have never had an encounter. I like to say what Dr. Jeff Meldrum says: I am am convinced by the evidence that something is out there. Have you thought of putting the in Podcast format? The audio is already there. I love to listed to podcast when exercising and would definitely listen to yours! I’d love to share Dr. Meldrum and Will’s video meets with my students if you are interested.

Another Oregon resident here. A few years after this 1972 story I did a lot of skiing on Mt. Hood. Back then I had no idea what a Big Foot was so I guess ignorance is bliss. I'm glad the guys were okay. Clear skies in March are rare.

I enjoy watching your shows ..You keep me glued as your telling the story ..Also like how you go into the back country .. When I go into the forest I always have my shotgun ..guessing you have pepper spray..?

I live along the Clackamas river near Mt Hood. I have camped and hiked that mountain with my two sons as they grew up (very beautiful place). 20 years of being in the woods no problem. In 2018 two of us had a Sasquatch encounter near Three Lynx, up a logging road. I've been shot at and even that did not compare to the fear we felt during our encounter. It freaked me out even more after realizing we have camped in the woods with these things all along and were probably watched at some point. My oldest and I went down the rabbit hole for a year after, had many things happen but never another visual (even though we knew they were just in the tree line). One time it sounded like a bulldozer (no shit) coming through the woods right for us, when it seemed like we would see it any second it went quiet. I mean QUIET, like the whole woods stopped making noise. Anyway, love the stories and can testify without a doubt they are real and alive on Hood.

And I can't believe the Timberline Lodge is still operating = everyone's gotta look at the website and read about the man that saved it in the 1950's with the family legacy with the lodge continuing today. Definitely put it on my bucket list for a bunny slope ski vacation!! So funny in your story you describe where the bigfoot broke into their food cache and devoured everything as a crime scene, lol...
