ABOUT THIS VIDEO
The video shoots for this video were unusually peaceful. The weather was beautiful. The music familiar. Though we had to trounce through a cow pie or two to get to the field location, the overall feeling there was just a peace that remained even with drones whizzing above our head. At Peter Prier Violin and Sons, Daniel Prier patiently and with great care took the time to care for Ben's cello (no cellos were harmed in the filming of this video -- in fact, Ben's cello got a new polish and touch up!).
The message behind this video is all about being made whole again. The teens in this orchestra may look (and sound) perfect, as though the world just steps aside to let them through, but that is not the case. Each of us is broken in so many ways, we are fragile beyond what anyone would think looking from the outside. So this video is dedicated to the broken and worn, the damaged and suffering -- to you. Just like the luthier restores a broken instrument to better than new, The Master Carpenter can restore each of us, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

Beautiful message! When I was young my violin broke and I had little money to repair. A generous man repaired for me. We are all broken. The Savior can make us whole!

I believe our stories are what brings us connection and comfort. When I first saw your announcement on Facebook, this story jumped to my mind and begged to be told. I’ll try to tell it without writing a novel... My second son is a bright, positive, happy kid. He was such a happy baby. He entered Kindergarten with such excitement to learn and we had every expectation that he would. Despite having a great teacher, reading didn’t come easy for him but we made it through the required books and he passed into first grade. First grade was not easy. He had a less affectionate teacher and he began to struggle. School became a battle ground. Homework took hours to complete. Going to school every day became fearful for him. He would cry every morning and I’d carry him to class and leave in tears. The school treated him as a troubled child and sent him to a counselor. In my Mama heart, I knew they were wrong, but I couldn’t find the reason we were having so many problems. We hired tutors to get through the school year and got no help academically from the school. Second grade saw a better, loving teacher that loved him like her own, and we started on a path of discovery. We learned he was a smart student, just inconsistent in his reading scores. Testing from the school showed he was still passing and there was nothing they would do to help us. It seemed that we were working so hard at home, hours at a time, to do what took other children less time to complete. He was exhausted by the time he got home from school and still faced hours of homework. I started looking for outside help. We took him to doctors and specialists. We received an “alphabet soup” of diagnosies. We learned there was ADHD and O.D.D. We had yet found the reason he was struggling with reading. As the years progress, school becomes less about learning to read and more about reading to learn. He was getting more and more frustrated and I didn’t know how to help him. He was bright but his reading score was in the “red zone”. That year, we had a good friend and gifted pianist move back to the area and we signed him up for piano lessons. He showed talent, even a gift for music. He picked up on reading notes and rhythms quickly and it came easily for him. We were thrilled to find something he excelled at. (now practicing….that’s another story) How could reading music be so easy, when reading words was so hard!? After a year, his piano teacher moved out of state. He got involved in other activities and the piano was dropped for a season. By the end of third grade, it was obvious we needed to try something new, but resources from the school were limited. I didn’t know how to help him and it weighed heavily on my heart. In a series of conversations with a friend, that some would describe as coincidence, but I know were orchestrated by a loving Heavenly Father, we found help. We learned the words Dyslexia, dysgraphia, and comorbid conditions. We learned of a nearby school that would be getting a three year grant for Dyslexia and we learned about variances. I found a specialist that could diagnose Dyslexia and set an appointment with the Vice Principal of the school to plead our case and hopefully give my son the opportunity to learn to read. With a prayer in my heart, I went to meet the Vice Principal. I was told they would love to help, but didn’t have room to allow variances. I had faith that this was where he needed to be. As we continued discussing options, she stopped what she was saying and said, “He can come. We’ll take him.” I cried. My heart started healing. There was hope. Prayers were answered. We’ve spent a year driving past four elementary schools three times a day to attend this program. I average three and a half hours in my car every school day. But it’s worth it. I’ve watched him bloom. They are unlocking the brilliant child that was always there, we just didn’t have the right keys. His confidence has soared and I can see the hand of my Heavenly Father in all of it. It wasn’t an overnight answer. I prayed for a long time to know how to help him. The pieces have fallen together in ways I never imagined. In Elder Jeffrey R Holland’s book, “Broken Things to Mend”, it says “Just believing, just having a molecule of faith - that simple step, when focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, has ever been and always will be the first principle of His eternal gospel, the first step out of despair.” That is what our story has been all about. This beautiful song that you so beautiful play, is all about this: trusting in our God. Having faith in the one who is mighty to save. It’s a favorite song at our house. My faith isn’t perfect, far from it. But our Father in Heaven is patient and ever ready to support us if we’ll turn to Him. Our story isn’t over. He’ll return for 5th grade in a few weeks. The curriculum will continue to get harder and harder, but so will the opportunities now that we know what we’re facing and have the keys to help him. Next year, orchestra is offered and he’s told me he wants to play. His brother has been learning the Violin. What fun for them to play together. He gave me permission to share his story to connect to others and maybe win a cello. But either way, I testify of the Lords hand in all of it.

From my son Ryan Caswell (turns 14 tomorrow): I started cello in 6th grade and couldn't hold the strings down so I gave up but I wanted to try again now that I can hold them and I loved the sound. My brother Jordan Caswell is playing violin tonight. I would love to join him on stage some day.

Be still, my soul, The Lord is on thy side Bear patiently, the cross of grief or pain Leave to Thy God, to order and provide In every change, He faithful will remain Be still, my soul, thy best thy heavenly friend Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end Be still, my soul, thy God doth undertake To guide the future as He has the past Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake All now mysterious shall be bright at last Be still, my soul, the waves and wind still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below In You I rest, in You I found my hope In You I trust, You never let me go I place my life within Your hands alone Be still, my soul Be still, my soul, the hour is hastening on When we shall be forever with the Lord When disappointment, grief and fear are gone Sorrow, forgot, love's purest joys restored Be still, my soul, when change and tears are past All safe and blessed, we shall meet at last In You I rest, in You I found my hope In You I trust, You never let me go I place my life within your hands alone Be still, my soul Be still, my soul Be still, my soul Be still, my soul....

My parents didn't have a lot of money to spare when I was growing up but they sacrificed so much so my sister and I could have piano lessons. I'm so grateful that my children share my love of beautiful music and am grateful to be able to support them in their musical endeavors.

One of my favorite quotes is "Life without Music would be flat (Bb)" it's so true. When I was brainwashed to play cello nothing can describe how it's changed my life and the lives of the people that listen to the Music I'm able to play from my cello. In the Lamb of God Jesus Christ's voice is portrayed by a the deep voice of cello. I truly believe I'm blessed to be able play the most amazing instrument on this Earthly world. So each time I play musical numbers for either my ward or for the Elderly each time the say I've touched them, or brought the holy ghost I know the reason I was brought to this earth. I hope I'll be able to continue to bless others with the voice of the cello for as long as possible. So the cello can help me to bring the spirit just like Jesus Christ did and still does today...and even sometimes through me.

I didn't grow up learning an instrument but always wished that I'd had the opportunity. As I've had children, exposing them to beautiful instrumental music and having them learn how to play instruments has been very important to us. My 8 year old son has blossomed in violin and piano and has inspired me to learn an instrument, even at 31 years old! I'd love an opportunity to learn the cello. Thank you for the beautiful music to share with our children.

This is an incredible arrangement of a beautiful piece of music! Every time I listen I feel the same spirit and peace I did while playing it. I can't express how grateful I am to Kayson, the Music Librarians, and everyone else who works so hard to give youth like me such a wonderful opportunity! I am also grateful and excited for the chance to get a new Cello! The Cello I have now isn't the best quality and I would love a new one. My private teacher has suggested I get a new one several times, Kayson has advised me to look into getting a new one, and my previous private teacher also said I would benefit from getting a new Cello, so thank you to Peter Prier Violins for another great opportunity!

Music has always been an important part of my life. My passion for music has helped me as I have gone through hard times in my life. Music has helped me see what I am capable of doing. I started playing the cello when I was 11 years old. My parents sacrificed time and money in order for me to be able to attend lessons and be able to rent a cello in order for me to practice. A year later I had grown enough that I needed a bigger cello, and the rentals got more and more expensive. Luckily my grandma had a couple hundred dollar cello that she had always wanted to learn. She saw my desire to play and let me borrow her cello. I am now in the point of my learning where I can no longer improve without a more expensive instrument. My family of ten cannot buy me a new instrument. We do not have the money for me to continue my cello experience, so it would mean a lot for me to get this cello. I hope to be able to play in this orchestra in the future.

Of all the good we hope will come from this video, I'm certain that Kaden will take with him the message and intent of this video long after the rest of us have made it just a happy memory. I honestly hope to see him play it in the Philharmonic soon. He's a remarkably humble young man and I'm so glad this instrument found its way to him! Thank you again, so many of you were deserving!

This is so peaceful! Be still my soul is one of my favorite hymns, and this version is fantastic!!! I've listened to this about 100 times now! I especially have loved peaceful music these last few years because I've been going through a lot of things like losing a friend and my mom getting sick and music was my way of escaping. This has become one of my new favorites. My favorite instrument is the cello. I absolutely love the deep sound it makes, and it was so cool to see one being crafted in the video. I have always wanted to play the cello, but quality ones are so expensive so I've never gotten the chance. Keep making videos guys! All of your songs mean so much to me!! Another wonderful arrangement of a favorite song with a important message. Thank you all for sharing your talents in creating this beauty (esp. a shout out to my nieces and nephew, the Jensen family). My daughter is beginning a new phase of life and bringing her rugged rental with her. As she enters a new high school, in a new district, with new teachers, faces, and challenges, I stand in awe as she quietly approaches the change. Her anxiety is deep and immobilizing yet performing solos, ensembles, and concerts with her classes has allowed her to show her gifts in new ways, without having to speak. I love watching her overcome insecurities and develop into such a determined young woman. She has been taking private and school cello lessons since she was eight years old. Many of her desires to study the cello come from her extremely talented cousins and the beauty they create and share with our family. Now that she is finally in a full-sized cello, my daughter has been saving up to purchase her own cello. I know her hard work will eventually pay off, but wouldn't it be fun to let her use her savings for a hard-case and surprise her with this "gratitude" cello? Thank you for allowing us to write about our children and how much we appreciate the influence of music in their lives. It is generosity like this that sparks more generosity. I look forward to the day when we can pay it forward to others as you, and Peter Prier Violin and Sons, are doing today! Thank you!

Wow! The touch of the master's hand message always touches my heart 💓 but with these amazing youth it is even more inspiring. I play this hymn frequently as prelude on the organ because it invites the spirit so strongly. I love your arrangement for all of the instruments. Beautifully done! I am looking forward to the time when my children will be a part of the Lyceum Philharmonic youth group! My daughter has always wanted to also learn the cello in addition to violin, but her teacher wants her to focus and stay on the violin so that she can be in the Philharmonic group on violin when she is in high school.

1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side; bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to your God to order and provide; in ev'ry change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heav'nly Friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. 2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future as he has the past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below. 3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart, and all is darkened in the vale of tears, then shall you better know his love, his heart, who comes to soothe your sorrow and your fears. Be still, my soul: your Jesus can repay from his own fullness all he takes away. 4 Be still, my soul: the hour is hast'ning on when we shall be forever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

I think that story I can share with FB is already fixed or it is almost healed. I can tell one of my stories...when I joined the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint, my parents were against the church...I got married with my husband in 1995 ( the year of Kobe Kansai earthquake, I was in Hiroshima...my husband almost hit the earthquake). My whole family in Japan was so angry about my decision joining the church and left my country. I went back to my country every year, my husband even got a job there and we went back to live in Japan for 6 years, but my family still didn't like me going to the church and having an American husband. They never came to our wedding, didn't want to talk to my husband, we also struggled having children for many years, inferiority treatments, almost near death experience before and after delivering my first baby, having twins babies, family member's illnesses, accident and deaths... trial was endless. It took more than 10 years for my family to accept me being a member of the church, now we are blessed with 4 beautiful children. Lots of trials and struggle we have been gone through were fixed but more trials have come. I have faced a different trial and my heart is broken right now. This video touched me because my broken heart is not fixed yet but I know it will heal and can be whole again. Only through Jesus Christ's Atonement, we will be healed. It gave me comfort to knowing this and reading Elder Holland talk gave me hope. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 Learn more at: tinyurl.com/okn6xhw" Thank you for making such an inspiring music to all of us. My daughter is so lucky to be a part of this amazing youth. She LOVES it! I cannot wait to listen to Nathan P. and wonderful music this weekend in Zion!
