My son and I set off on a 9 day adventure that would take us from California, through New Mexico and deep into Texas where we explore Big Bend National Park and Padre Island National Seashore. Join us as we head off the beaten path, do a little camping in the mountains, desert and on the beach and cook up some great chow at camp.

0:47 That was our group at Padre Island! I owned the silver jeep to the right of the frame. Saw ya eating at a BBQ joint in San Antonio and didn't wanna bother ya! We were the big group that sat down just as you guys were heading out. I was the sunburned tomato! We couldn't believe it was you! Drive safe and be safe guys

I'm from Texas and the lack of public land is one of my biggest complaints about the state. There is so much seemingly empty unused land too.
@cabiv545
@cabiv545 3 года назад
Because Texas was a country when it joined the US, it kept its public land.
@RanchoTexano
@RanchoTexano 3 года назад
Also the Spanish and later Mexico made massive land grants to bring settlers to Texas. Most of these were honored when Texas became a Republic and when it became a state. The rest belonged to Texas as the post above explains

" There is so much seemingly empty unused land too." It's private land. Owned by private citizens. That's like complaining about not allowing people to come traipse around your own backyard.
@huehuehue-x3c
@huehuehue-x3c 3 года назад
@@heavymetal9099 It's pretty dumb to argue that millions of miles of unimproved land are the same as your own backyard. Sure, people own it but unless they are all employing dozens of ranch hands to protect the land, it would be pretty easy to camp on the so-called "private" land.

First of your videos that I have watched and I really like your style. I am a Texan, from up the coast past Galveston, and you described the state well. That looked like a fun trip, but you really racked up the miles. An outsider might not realize you drove over 1700 miles through Texas, which was easy on this end of the screen.... But, you had your son to visit with along the way, so well worth it. Ultimate respect to your son for serving our country. Subscribed.

One of the real things nobody Overlanding has touched is cleanup. Cooking all of these big, fancy meals. But doing it in a fashion that is easy to clean up afterwards. For me, if you have a campfire, all of your leftover organics and paper products go into the campfire. Aluminum foil, glass, plastic goes into the carry out bag. Bears.... I was just in serious Bear country. They can smell your leftovers 12 miles away.

Big Bend is my favorite place in Texas. The Big Bend Ranch State Park is great as well. It has about 70 miles of unmaintained roads accessible to 4x4 and has a lot of great primitive camping grounds. Worth a look the next time you go! It's the biggest state park in Texas! Also, stop by Terlingua . I know you like abandoned mines, and that old town has a few. Oh, and also you have to stop at Langtry! The home of Judge Roy Bean, the Only Law West of the Pecos! His saloon is still there.

You were so close but next time try to hit Boco Beach and see the Star Ships and complex that SpaceX is building. Took my son there last month going the opposite direction on a 3,000 mile round trip from from Oklahoma to Boco Beach/SpaceX to BBNP/Alpine to McDonald Observatoryand back to Oklahoma . If you go back to Big Bend (which I now consider to be crowded) need to try an area with no people in the wildlife management area. My mom's cousins lived on the east side of the park 100 years ago and left when it became a park. Their home site is still there (just the walls now) on the bank of the Rio Grand which is now a camp ground (not in the park proper) and is on the end of a long jeep trail that is more difficult and nothing like the roads in BBNP which are all easy. We took our Cherokee on part of Black Gap. Black Gap is easy but since it has been on the Jeep Badge of Honor it has
