I think she meant that although there were cell phones in the world, at age 13 she and Ben didn't have one yet, which is perfectly reasonable especially for 2006 when they were more of a luxury. They probably got cell phones when they entered high school.

Exactly, I'm around her age and while technically there were cell phones very few 12/13 year olds had them and texting was limited. Everyone was using AIM and Myspace to keep in touch.

She didn't mean it was before cell phones were invented, she meant it was before cell phones were a common thing high schoolers had. I was in high school in 2006, none of my friends had cell phones at 15.

I'm from NY, not Cali, but I, too, have friends from that school, and I also have friends from her theater camp (Stagedoor Manor)... but I don't know Beanie so we must have gone during different summers. It's an amazing camp: Natalie Portman, Lea Michele, Skylar Astin, and Ansel Elgort went there (among many others, who are mostly not famous).

If you're from Greenwich, you probably know tons of Stagedoor kids. It's funny; people assume that you need to audition to go there (maybe because of the independent movie "Camp" - which was written by an old alum and filmed at the camp off-season - which shows a theater camp full of kids who don't have much money and who get to go to camp even if they're not on speaking terms with their parents.) In reality, to go to Stagedoor all you need is the money to pay the fees (no audition), plus a parent to give permission.... so the campers are mostly upper-middle class kids from all over the country, plus a few lucky foreigners. When I got to college I saw lots of Stagedoor alumni I remembered from my summers, and met many others when I became active in performing arts. For a while, during the recession, to try to convince reluctant parents to write checks, the camp was compiling lists of where alumni ended up going to college, and then bragging about how so many Stagedoor alumni go to the Ivy league... but now, (after Glee, HSM, and Pitch Perfect) so many kids want to go to Stagedoor that there are waiting lists, and the camp doesn't need to try to sell itself at all.

She ended up as my favorite character in Hello Dolly because of her bubbly personality! I remember meeting her at the stage door and not knowing who she was. Now I wish I could’ve gone back in time and told her how much I love her performance in Lady Bird!
