Me too, it's such a big part of most people's diet here. During the war, thre country survived on beans on toast.

Emmy. Eating beans on toast without putting butter on the toast first, is like eating a burger without sauce (mayo, ketchup, etc) It is absolutely necessary for the full effect.

Try it with a fried egg on top and some cracked black pepper! I always use mature cheddar too and a bit of butter on the toast, Delicious and filling :)

Ideally you need to thickly butter your toast as soon as it's ready, so that butter has time to melt from the heat of the bread, ensuring you've put enough button on that it can't quite melt fully. Next up, your beans aren't fully cooked. You need to boil the bean's saurce so the liquid reduces so it's much thicker, the sugars probably need to bind or something. Also, if you're Pro, you'll add a good amount of freshly cracked black pepper if you decide to forgo the cheese topping, as the beans are cooking.Lastly, and alternative to beans on toast, is chopped tomatoes (from a tin) heated in a pan, and a large handful of cheese dropped in until it just starts to melt and that placed on toast (again buttered)

In the Appalachian region of the US, we have a popular dish called beans and cornbread, where you crumble cornbread into a bowl of pinto beans. I'm imagining it's similar to this, for those of you who may be curious. :-)

Always had beans and toast growing up. Buttered bread, sometimes in the side like to dip it in. We also had leftover spaghetti (fried up in a pan) on top buttered toast. Yum!

+Wouter Veraart. Fry minced meat, ad chopped onions and garlic, keep stirring, now ad some tomato puree, stir it in with the other stuff, ad pepper salt and then ad the beans, and let it simmer for for 5 to 10 minutes, serve with mashed potatoes or rice with a salad on the side. You can use small pieces of bacon instead of minced meat. I like it spicey. don't use heinz beans they are way to sweet.

I always butter the toast- the taste of the butter mixes with the beans and is all rich and comforting. This is classic childhood teatime comfort food to me!

It's just not done in America! I have seen those beans in the specialty grocery store "International Foods" section. I guess I'll have to try it! So, are you supposed to butter your toast?

+AAlt Use salted butter, that's where the "complexity" (as Emmy puts it) is supposed to come from. I don't like beans on toast but when I do spaghetti hoops on toast I butter it. Tastes better.

+Char Are spaghetti hoops just spaghettios? I've never thought of eating them ON toast but they're just fine with a grilled cheese sandwich, which is similar I guess. I might try that the next time I eat them (usually thats only something I eat when I want something edible but bland so I don't eat them much)

One of my favorite foods to get while I'm in the UK is beans and cheese pizza. It's so tasty and odd but in the most amazing way. Looking forward to my next beans and cheese pizza when I return in April!

When I had this in a pub in Britain many years ago, the beans (and buttered toast) came topped with a hard fried egg, diced raw onion, tons of pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. I always have mine that way, but I prepare the toast like garlic bread. It's a hearty stick-to-your ribs meal and I make 3 portions for about $3.25. This is pretty important for a graduate student who lives in one of the most expensive cities in the world. :)

Wow! I didn't know this was just a UK thing. Yes you were ment to butter the toast. Lol! Beans and cheese is also nice on a baked potato, in fact, that is sold in most of our cafe's and take away's. Well it is in Cornwall but can't speak for the rest of the UK.

Emmy if you have not tried it already, please try HP Sauce, its a British savoury sauce, also known as brown sauce that is tangy and sour and sweet and totally delicious. Its almost as ubiquitous as ketchup here, especially nice with bacon / sausages!

My mother would make this with VanCamp's Pork and Beans, slices of bacon, and a slice of cheese. Then melt the cheese in the broiler part of the oven. She would also do hot dogs the same items by making a slit length wise on the hot dog, then carefully insert cheddar cheese into the slit, then spiral wrap bacon(I prefer to pre-cook the bacon a little bit before wrapping them.) around the hot dog secure with toothpicks and bake or broil to melt the cheese. The beans were heated in a saucepan and assembled like a chili dog.

I used to live in Southern Indiana, and I could find Heinz and other brands of beans in tomato sauce. I now live in WI, and I've only ever seen beans in tomato sauce once, at a Dollar Tree, in 20 years.

So interesting to learn that what's considered a basic staple here in the uk doesn't exist in this form in the US. I'm also in the butter the toast first camp and not only do I put a generous squish of ketchup on but I also add extra salt and vinegar, deliciously nostalgic every time I eat it.

As a young tourist in the UK and Ireland I have had it served on pan fried or deep fried bread. It is crazy good, but not for the clogged of heart.

I'm half Mexican and in my family we eat mashed retired beans on Birote bread with ether parmesan cheese on top and it's delicious :3 you can also put other kinds of cheese on it like Mexican blend cheese or mozzarella cheese.

Ooh, memories from my childhood. These are baked beans for me. Haven't been able to find them here in Utah. was able to find them in California. My dad who is born and raised just outside London used to serve us this with fried egg and cheese on top, and serve it when the cheese was melted.

I was so baffled when I saw this video title! The thought that beans on toast could be video-worthy is so weird to me. For a Brit, I feel like this is kinda like going "oooh, let's try this exotic dish, it's called a potato." - beans on toast is just a staple! (None of this is a criticism Emmy, your interest in things that are new to you is always charming and I really did learn something today :D)

Practically every child in the UK was raised on these. The Secret is however to cook them slow allowing the liquid to reduce and the sugars to caramelise making them sticky and spreadable.

Normally, here in the UK you're supposed to put the Branston Pickle in a sandwich with cheddar cheese. A Cheese and Pickle sandwich is a very popular sandwich over here in the UK but unknown in the US. You should try it - it's my favourite sandwich. My American flatmate at University had no clue what it was. A common variation of this sandwich is a 'Ploughman's Sandwich' which is cheddar, pickle, iceberg lettuce, mayo and cured ham. You also have pickle here in something we call a 'Ploughman's Lunch' which involves having a dollop of pickle, a baguette or slices of bread, a large wedge/slab of cheddar, some butter and salad, a hardboiled egg and some pickled onions on the side. This is what farmers - and of course ploughmen - traditionally ate as far back as the 14th century and has been a national favourite ever since.

The way I've been eating beans on toast since I can remember in South Africa is to cook the beans and really make it your own. So, braise your onion, add a green chilli, add some extra tomato and curry powder, then, finally add the canned baked beans. It's delicious and tastes more homey.

I think the choice of music was a real win here. Sort of an awkward, hesitant "womp womp womp" for a "meal" that to those of us who have no nostalgia for it seems pretty sad. I'm not sure why I enjoy the videos where you eat mundane foods so much, but why question it if it inspires joy and bizarre fascination? "Hello, my lovelies. Today I found a dusty can of sardines from 1992, so I'm going to be eating that with some stoned wheat thins and cheese whiz. Itadakimasu~~"

Emmy, this is such a staple in my house! Growing up this was a weekend dish, and when I lived in England I would always have beans with veggie fingers and potato waffles (which I unfortunately cannot find here in the states). One thing we do differently is we modify the beans with butter, onions, garlic, ginger, serrano peppers, salt, turmeric powder, and garam masala. It's heavenly! You should give that a go on some buttered toast.

Back when I use to live in southern Ireland, I'd have buttered toast with beans(without the sauce) and two strips of maple bacon on top for breakfast every Tuesday and Friday before heading off to school.

This is such a weird concept to me. Here we call those "pork-n-beans" and in that state they are what we would consider "raw".....we never eat those beans like that because they aren't done. We buy them to make baked beans out of. We add brown sugar, mustard, and a little grape jelly and they become our version of baked beans. Funny how we all treat them so differently huh? =}

Beans on toast in the uk is just one of those cheap and super easy quick fix meals. Great with a fried egg on top or grated cheese like you did. I'd always recommend slightly over cooking the beans to thicken the sauce a little and when you toast the bread try to toast it on a low heat for longer so it really dries the bread out and it keeps its crunch once its topped with the beans. Growing up mexican I ate something kind of similar. We called it a mollete, we'd mash the beans into paste (either pinto or black", butter and toast half a bolillo, then put the paste and either mozzarella or Oaxaca cheese on top and warm it till the cheese melted. Best breakfast yo

I literally have this for breakfast lunch and dinner everyday at University :/ student life. But yep butter the toast, cheese underneath the hot beans so it melts and make sure everything is piled high. British and Irish classic.

Here in Finland a dish called "Avocado pasta" became popular a few years ago by a chef called Alexander Gullichsen ^_^ It's so delicious~ I definetely recommend that you try it :D

I cook my beans so they are almost stodgy and very thick, then put them on toast (buttered if you're not bothered about calories that day) and top it with a fried or poached egg, with some HP sauce on the side!

The shredded cheese should be grilled until bubbling and a slice of bacon then added to the top. Worcester sauce or HP sauce is also good with it.

Years ago, I would read some Thailand forums and every now and then a topic would appear on where to buy Heinz beans or someone would mention that they dragged a few cans over from somewhere in the UK. lol. Also, when you order a traditional English breakfast in Thailand, a nice little portion of beans would be included. It's not a bad addition and at once place I had the fluffiest scrambled eggs ever. Strange memories.

This is the weirdest experience ever because in Ireland this is just a thing people do. To think it's strange in other countries is so odd. Like it's just beans on toast. The thing you make when you're hungry and you don't know what to make, or are feeling to lazy to make something substantial. Or your broke! Or you just want some beans on toast..

Absolutely! I think America has a few of their own similar cheap and fast meals. Like I had no idea what tater-tots, hot pockets or pop tarts were, but they seem to be a similar nostalgic(?) staple.

Mats Thorsen In America, you can eat those foods whenever you want. They aren't very healthy, they fall into our 'junk food' category. I love them, but I'm sure you can't eat those things everyday. We have a lot of cheap, fast meals here.

I'm from Britain and my family and I went to Majorca on holiday or vacation and I think it's funny how we went abroad and just lived off of beans on toast for 40% of the trip. It was just a simple easy dinner because we have it so often :)

Kat Elizabeth You're right, Should have watched it to the end. Just seemed like a disaster to me once the beans were poured on the toast that I didn't bother watching the rest. Butter, for all of its ills, is what makes this concoction palatable.

Beans on toast used to be a staple on that cartoon Danger Mouse back in the day. Stilleto, the crow henchman for the bad guy Baron Silas Greenback, used to have to make them for Nero, Baron Greenback's pet caterpillar. "Oy, Nero, when d'ya wont yer beans on toast?" Damn, that brought back old memories :)

More crazy things us Brits put on toast... 1. Chopped Pork 2. Banana 3. Cheese (not grilled) between two slices of toast 4. Sardines 5. Eggs (fried) or you can dip the bread in whisked eggs and then shallow fry for french toast... some people like to put a bit of cinnamon on french toast for a sweeter taste.. 6. Pretty much anything lol All with butter of course.

You gotta add a ton of butter to that toast, pour the beans on and then let it sit for a minute or 2. It's so much better when the toast absorbs the sauce and goes really soft.

Im from Cape Town South Africa, and one of my all time favourite night time snacks is beans on buttered toast with a generous amount of Cheese XD I think we've adapted this eating habit from our British descendants, love it! In Singapore, all the traditional western food stalls (stalls that sell Western inspired cuisine in coffeshops and food centers) always serve steak, chops or whatever meat cut with coleslaw, beans with tomato sauce (we also call them baked beans) and buttered toast/baguette. Surprised this is such a foreign concept in the US. Guess Singapore got it from our British colonial roots. 😅

Yes we do butter the toast and often put a knob of butter in the beans too (really makes a difference), plus salt and pepper. Another thing you can do is put cheese on top of the beans with a few dashes of Worcester sauce, and give it a quick grilling to melt the cheese. Very yummy and makes a quick easy supper!

My mom grew up in the extreme NW corner of Minnesota on a turkey farm. One of her favorite meals as a kid was creamed peas on toast.

I prefer Branston beans, they're a little softer and I think the flavour is better. We usually butter the toast and we often eat with two slices of bread (one topped with beans and the other sliced in half)
