I just recently bought the parang machete and let me tell you it is a thing of beauty, it works great you don't have to sharpen it often and when you do it is a breeze to do so. An the survival instructions as well as the little pouch on the back of the sheath is water and tear resistant, it really is a perfect piece.

These knives actually aren't that bad. Don't get me wrong, they got nothing on Cold Steel. But I recently bought the Parang Machete for a small garden chore and I was very impressed. It was 1055 high carbon steel, full tang, secure grip handle, AND it came VERY sharp out of the box. I've used it since then and it has not lost it's edge. A very nice blade for $20
@npaul4171
@npaul4171 11 лет назад
The problem with plastic can be stress cracking, especially with extreme temp changes. Newer epoxy bases, such as G10 composite, greatly improve upon this and have found their way on many knives because of it. While rubberized handles do give more initial grip, on heavy usage knives they will eventually be destroyed. Micarta (and dry carbon fiber) have offered solutions to this as they grip well when dry and actually increase in grip when wet or bloody, but have strength along the lines of G10.

to everyone bitching about these knives, I own some and I can say that for the price they are defiantly good. Bear isn't trying to make these hardcore, state of the art , super expensive weapons. hes making cheap, good quality, reliable knives that will make your survival situation much easier.

My personal opinion of the items I have purchased that were Bear Grylls: FireSteel: Good. Works well. Nothing significant over other firesteels but much better than typical magnesium. Scout Knife: It is ok. If I could go back I would have kept my money. Ultimate Survival Knife: Complete piece of junk. Substandard metal. Bent serration, bent blade and bent tip from non-strenuous use. Don't waste your money on it. I prefer to buy higher quality products now rather than replace the gimmicky, celebrity-endorsed, near aluminum quality cutting instruments.

Why not take a sharpener with you? Serrated blades last longer than razor sharp blades, but a soapstone finish will extend the life of a razor sharp blade, and a small chain blade will allow you to sustain life in the wild by facilitating construction.

I have the first knife. I've added paracord to the flint stick so it doesn't get lost. Also added 10ft paracord, fish hooks and lures, military can opener, water purification tablets, snare line and mini magnification glass to the sheath. It all fits great. The sheath's plastic casing though has a small split both sides and could have been made better, I've repaired it with duct tape. Other than that, it's a good solid survival knife.

Bear I'm a huge fan. You are much more about doing than talking so let a salesman make a short point on salesmanship which is not a shameful thing to not have developed and need adjusting. You developed great products with Gerber. When giving your viewers the skinny on the usefulness, value and reliability of your knives, multi tools, kits, etc.. focus your message rather on simply telling them just about the usefulness, value and reliability and let your genuine belief you have in your products come across. Shane Fazen, a good striking coach and yourself tend to use the message "You need this product" that you picked up watching infomercials. That's not how you would naturally come across, trust your instincts, try that and your products will get more word of mouth recommendations with better overall sales. A knife is an absolute must in a survival situation and you have an awesome show. Good luck.

I appreciate what he has done for Scouting although here in America I wasn't aware of any of his involvement. Now, even though the American Scouting organization sort of discourages the use of a fixed blade knife, all of my Scouts are trained on and expected to have a camping fixed blade knife. There are too many camp chores that have as a centerpiece the fixed blade. Mostly I rec a Mora but if a Scout's parents can afford a more expensive knife I point them to several of the BK or Esee knives.

Why he does not have my respect has nothing to do with his skills or accomplishments. he does not have my respect because he markets these crappy blades to his fans than may actually need to use one day. These blades will break after some use compared to what blades at this price range should be able to do. If anything he needs to show some respect to his fans by not pushing overpriced junk to them.

***** I'm with you about Les .. but Ray Mears .. alone? Not likely, he has as much crew around him as Bear, and what I've heard from people meeting him, he can be a bit of a wisea-- and center-of-attention guy. That's really sad. Great skills are only as good as the humility they come with, in my opinion. Sadly, there's no real non-comercialized survivalist out there. They all do their best to sell stuff or their knowledge as high as possible. Look at Dave C of Dual Survival. First he posted some videos for free .. but when he got enough followers .. all of a sudden he didn't even stop at just being a YT partner .. he started charging for people watching his videos as bad as any crappy WWF-on-demand fight on your tv.

I have used tons of Buck Knives. They are made well and come razor sharp out of the box, but once the edge dulls they are just about impossible to get razor sharp again (because of the 420HC steel), although they are serviceable. You can send it back to the factory for sharpening but who wants to do that? If you want a knife that is ridiculously sharp, stays that way for a long time, and is still easy to resharpen, try a Mora Companion MG, and they are less than $20.

Buck knives have many different price lines to hit basically every part of the market... just like Gerber in this video, these shown are entry-mid priced knives. Buck is known for using 420HC in most of their line-up where their topline knives ($200) will use S30V now. to me, buck offers traditionally styled knives that have quality scales and build quality once above $50 compared to other companies in the same price range (which is why they're popular). the only knock i have is they're heavy.

If I get any bear grylls product I’m probably going to get the hatchet. See, it looks the most sturdy and since we use hatchets to chop wood, you don’t have to sharpen it as much, and if you do, then you don’t need to put a 10-15 degree edge on there that will chip and such. I’d just put a 20-25 degree grind on there and use it to split wood. See, with the parang, the metal gets really small by the handle at the beginning of the tang, which means it might snap under heavy use. If I get and BG product, it’s most likely to be the BG ultimate pro knife, BG firesteel, (got one a while back, throws sparks really far) and what I’ve talked about earlier, the hatchet.

@TheWtfnonamez
@TheWtfnonamez 8 лет назад
Tbh I never used to like them, but I kept seeing knife experts I respected casually referencing them as benchmarks whilst rating other knives. I finally checked them out and realised why they are so highly rated. I personally think its a Scandinavian thing: a Culture that has traditionally camped, fished and hunted for over a millennium, in a hostile environment where steel is scarce and a valuable commodity. They were forced to make the best knife, out of the steel they had, with the most economy, and with a grind that could be sharpened until the whole knife was worn away. A knife was for life back then. (hence the straight scandi-grind). I recently bought the cheapest Hulfators knife I could find on amazon as an experiment ... it might be small, the back-side of spine has a rough finish... but for under 5euro ......christ.. you could survive with this knife. Its razor sharp, the blade grind is impeccable and whilst the sheath is cheap and plastic, its really solid and well designed. Its main strength is that its ALL knife. No frills and bullshit.. the money went into the blade and handle.

Carefully check out the features of the folder. If you are going to put it through any hard use, is the blade supported by metal liners? I once bought a box of cheap folders, some had no support once locked out and yes a knife can be broken that way.

Generally any Grylls product I see seems to be marked up by 50-100% more than what I think it's really worth - The only 'sponsored' product I've seen worth its salt is the Wetterlings Bushman axe 'Designed by Les Stroud'. Priced comparably to the rest of their range it's subtly innovative yet well regarded enough not to be sneered at by those who know their axe. - Mind you, the first run of them had unfortunate teething troubles but that's all sorted now. It's beautifully handmade but still cheaper than the ultimate survival knife and arguably more useful too :-)

m.A.A.dVillain it’s very difficult to equate knives with computers because the number of operating systems in circulation and the number of brand names selling computers is much lower than the number of knife makers, brand names, etc. If I were to make the bridge, serrated edge knives are like computers with windows operating systems. They’re common, lots of people like them, and they’re junk once they’ve had a few cuts, but that’s fine because they can be had for very cheap or very expensive. Mac is like a straight edge knife. There’s no consideration for people who prefer to use their knife to saw through a rope, they’re only meant for people who like slicing. And people who go for Macs would go for straight edge blades because maintenance on them is very easy and minimal. The knives like Mac OS, just work the way they were intended with no added multi-functionality. So what is a Bear Grylls knife in this analogy? I would say it’s an HP. One of the ones that’s made to look more like a MacBook Pro, but doesn’t have any upgraded internal components. Much like how the steel on a Bear Grylls knife looks good because of the form, but works terribly due to the substandard components.

You may know more than Bear Grylls, and that is fine! I applaud your infinite knowledge of survival. Still, that is no reason to verbally attack him by saying he doesn't know what he is doing. He obviously knows enough to have survived both his stint in the military as well as several expeditions to places that kill anyone who doesn't know what they are doing. On top of that, he really hasn't done anything to you personally, so why attack him?
@8bitkefka

Mandy Lou Considering he has on several occasions during his show done things that are against the most basic rules of survival and potentially would cause death or injuries if done in a survival situation. Not to mention the quality of the Gerber gear with the Bear Gryll's line is cheap and poor design that you can purchase better for cheaper. It is sad as I love Gerber. His military service also is not called to question on the methods he is teaching and the products he is offering.

The Papa Smurf 1. Bear Grylls is in a whole level above other survivors like Les Stroud. Les Stroud is jealous of Bear Grylls because he can't do the things that Bear can do. Les can't survive extreme situations. He can only survive in situations that he has a safe spot to make camp and enough water and food around to gather. If he had an accident, get trapped on ledge of a cliff, and lost all his belonging, he'll have no clue what to do. Bear, on the other hand, will show you how to improvise anything into a life saving tool, assess the situation, and make smart decisions, which dramatically increase the chance of survival. 2. Bear never do anything against the rules of survival. He always tell you how to avoid those dangerous situations, but he goes a step further by showing how to get out it in case you couldn't avoid it (which happens all the time). His shows are not about watching how he survive (that would be too easy), but it's rather about putting him in extreme situations so that he can show the kind of knowledge, and will power required to get to safety. Why? Because there are people die every year facing those kind of extreme situations. There are many hikers who are trapped in all kind of hell holes every years and most of them die because they don't know the right things to do. Bear put himself in all those situations and show how to get out of it alive in order to save those unfortunate people's lives. Like i said, Bear is in a league of his own. Don't even compare puny Les Stroud to mighty Bear Grylls.

Seyha Leonhartz No. Bear Grylls shows are so action based so that they receive an audience, and much of what he shows you is staged (ie: hey watch me make fire with a bow drill - 5seconds later he's done), and the information is misleading. RU-vid Trapper Jack. He'll show proper improvisation of tools and such. Also, Bear Grylls never mentions the fact that usually the best way to survive is just staying put and spending as little energy as possible (like his army training teaches) and waiting for rescue. Instead he focuses on running about and doing stupid things like leaping cliff to cliff (imagine if he broke a leg - in a survival situation that's pretty much you screwed). I have no hatred (in fact I respect him for his service) for the guy, I simply recognise that him and his show is mainly entertainment, and offer little practical survival instruction or knowledge. If you want proof of this just look at his tools - they're pretty much all overpriced and some of them are literally just Gerber Products with his name on them and a new grip! Like his show most are just money spinners. Not actual survival tools. So while I like Bear, I'd take Ray Mears' knowledge (and equipment) over his anyday.

Yes, I'm all for finding flint and tinder if you have no fire starting method, but, what I mean is; What is the point of buying the flint and tinder set, if you could buy a lighter instead? Flint found in nature(is it even flint?, it's more like a rock) isn't even sparked up in the same way. You need to strike a surface with it instead of scraping a metal piece to a flint rod, so it's not like you get any practice for when you bring nothing. Any other advantages?

I have the folding knife and it is lightweight and easy to carry. I would not recommend to try batoning it due to it being a folder but for general camp use it is easy to sharpen and seems to hold an edge well. Great video have a great day and a better tomorrow

I have to say something else. There are a lot of negative comments here. Those people who have so much time to compare so many different products don't use any of them enough to know which is really valuable. ONLY multiple usage over many years in multiple situations is a worthy review. I am sure, but I could be wrong, Bears tools will I am sure last reasonably ( maybe very, very) well and do the job needed. Bear is an International celebrity and someone of immense integrity, he wouldn't put his name and word to bullshit…maybe there is better..for me, I know much bette than the field in general, based on massive, constant, hard usage in multiple situations over many years, for me, without doubt, Imacassa Machete is the single by far best ultimate tool, but I am sure Bears tools do 'cut the mustard' and very well indeed too. Please await my Imacassa machete review; a real review based on what I said. ( of course there are many solid tools; Tamontino; Condor and I am fairly sure Bear Gryls Gerber! etc) Please don't get onto me because I haven't used Bears Gerbers; I consider all reviews less than several years hard usage not real reviews unless for throw away tools! That is virtually every review On RU-vid is absolutely non-conclusive and hence next to useless as I havn't seen any based on several or many years usage.)

anyone who is going to buy a knife like this more than likely both has the tools for, and knows how to make a knife razor sharp. the only point of the portable sharpener is that it is always there in case you DO get lost/stuck out there and need to sharpen your blade at some point. and considering its made in china, it comes reasonably sharp from the package. and for the price, personally i think its a great buy. especially for a first knife for a son or friend.
