In this video, I give you my full review of the Philips Norelco Series 5100 Beard and Head Trimmer, Model BT5210/42.
Philips touts this trimmer for its hair lift comb, that lifts and guides hairs to the blade, for efficient one pass trimming. It’s engineered for an even beard and hair trim at every angle, and said to achieve the perfect 3-day stubble.
Currently, the Philips Series 5100 trimmer ranks at #10 on Amazon for the category of beard and mustache trimmers.
For those that need tight incremental trimming lengths for beard and hair, and are happy with a stubble finish, this Philips Series 5000 trimmer is the grooming device to get the job done.
Taking a look inside the Philips Norelco Series 5100 Beard and Head trimmer box, you’ll find the trimmer, beard and stubble comb, short hair comb, long hair comb, charger, and brush.
Now, if you take a look at my previous video on the Philips Norelco Multigroom 3000 and Multigroom 7000, you’ll notice that these grooming devices have a metal trimmer attachment similar to the Series 5100, as well as their own set of beard and hair trimming guards.
While the Philips Multigroom 7000 and Multigroom 3000 require you to continuously switch attachments from one guard length setting to the next, the Philips Norelco Beard and Head trimmer utilizes 3 beard and hair combs that work in combination with a built in zoom wheel.
The beard and short hair trimming combs correlate to the red digits on the top row of the zoom wheel, while the long hair comb correlates with the silver digits on the bottom row.
For beard and short hair, the Norelco Series 5100 allows for 17-integrated trim settings, starting in 0.2mm increments from lengths 0.4mm to 2mm, 0.5mm increments from lengths 2mm to 5mm, and in 1mm increments from lengths 5 to 7mm.
For long hair, the Philips Series 5100 also utilizes 17-integrated trimmer settings, starting in 0.2mm increments from 6.4mm to 8mm, 0.5mm increments from 8 to 11mm, and 1mm increments from 11mm to 13mm.
As far as battery life, the Philips Norelco Beard and Head Trimmer has a Lithium-ion battery and requires 1hr of charge time for 70 minutes of cordless use.
Additionally, it has a 5-minute quick charge good for the length of one cordless cut and can be used plugged in for continuous use.
The trimmer and all the attachments are fully washable, however, the Series 5100 is only for use in dry condition and is not for bathing in the shower.
Overall, the Philips Norelco Series 5100 Beard and Head trimmer is great for trimming your hair and beard at tight length settings. I recommend this product for those with shorter hair or beards below 13mm, as the long hair guard only goes up to this setting.
For those that want to trim and detail with precision, the Multigroom 7000 is your go to trimmer, while those looking for a bargain price will find the Multigroom 3000 meets their needs.
The Philips Norelco Series 5100 Beard and Head Trimmer includes the following:
- Series 5100 Trimmer
- Beard and Stubble Comb
- Short Hair Comb
- Long Hair Comb
- Charger
- Brush
Good Luck!

Awesome review and very professional camera work! I’ve been looking for a grooming tool that helps me get that 5 o’clock shadow look but on my head because I don’t like the Mr. clean skin close feel that I get with a razor. I’ve been looking at the Conair for men istubble but this is definitely on my radar now. How did “even trim at every angle” claim hold up? Would appreciate the reply and please don’t forget about my suggestion of the Conair istubble please!

Hi, Angel. Thank you so much for your kind words and continued support of the channel! I really appreciate it! The Philips Norelco Series 5100 definitely felt like an even trim throughout the various increment levels I used. The blades were sharp and it cut well. If there is any claim I might make note of, it is their "one pass trimming" claim. I'm not sure what Philips Norelco means exactly, as for many areas, I had to go over the area several times, similar to how you might need to pass over an area with a foil shaver. Other than that, it was a solid trim. I definitely haven't forgotten about your suggestion :) . The Conair istubble is on my ever growing list of suggestions from the community and I hope to get to it at some point in the future. Thanks, again, for watching and being a positive member of the community. I greatly appreciate it! All the best!

Hi, your videos are very helpful man, thank you. I have a question though, would you recommend me this model over the norelco 7000 series, in term of precision and trim quality
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, Amine El bahlouli. Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I greatly appreciate your support of the channel and am happy to hear this video was helpful to you. For precision beard trimming, I still recommend the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000. If your goal is a stubble finish at a tight increment length setting, then I recommend checking out my video on the Philips Beard Trimmer 5500 seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aSEF_AOenW8.html. The 5500 is an upgraded model of the Series 5100 and I compare both in this video that I put out a few weeks ago. Of the trimmers I have reviewed to-date, the Multigroom 7000 is one of the better performers for precision on the beard. I've received much positive feedback from the community on its performance and it has continued to hold a very positive 4.6 out of 5.0 star review rating on Amazon (amzn.to/2W1yfsg). The Multigroom 7000 comes with the pieces needed for creating crisp, uniform looks that are absent with the 5500 and Series 5100, and depending on the size of your beard, you can interchange the beard and hair guards to trim at longer lengths or get down to that stubble look. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and being a member of the GroomReviews community! All the best!

They now have a newer version series 5500 that gives you 90 minutes of run time with a one hour charge that goes up to 10mm for a beard instead of 7mm that the 5100 goes up to. Its $49.99 at best buy.

Hi, AG Gaming. Thank you for sharing this with the GroomReviews community. They've also increased the haircut length from 13mm to 20mm. Looks like a nice upgrade from the Series 5100. I appreciate the update. I'll have to try and get my hands on one for a possible review. Thanks for watching and being part of the GroomReviews community! All the best!

Great video! All your videos are awesome! One question, what if you used it on your skin without the attachment? .4 is as low as you could go with the attachment but without the attachment I wonder how close it would get? I guess as close at the series 3000 and series 7000? I assume there would still e a slight stubble, maybe .2 or so? The only way to make it perfectly bald would be with a foil shaver attachment or shaving with a razor and shaving cream. Also, not sure if you noticed or not but 2 of the attachments also had a red outline on them to be used with the red numbers on the trim wheel and the third attachment had a silver outline to be used with the silver numbers.

Hi, Honest Mike. Thanks so much for the positive feedback! I'm happy to hear you are enjoying the videos and appreciate your support of the channel. To your question, yes, using this device without the skin guard will still leave stubble. Using a razor or foil shaver, as you mentioned, would be the way to bring that stubble down to a smoother finish. Thanks for watching and being a member of the GroomReviews community! All the best!

Do you have any suggestions for trimming a beard into the sideburns so it transitions smoothly? I was using the Phillips Norelco 5100 at 4 mm setting all around my beard but I wanted a more natural finish into my sideburn. Should I use a 4.5 setting as I go higher up into my sideburn? If so how high up do I go?
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, Ahmad. Thanks for watching and for your question. This will depend on the length of your hair moving from the sideburns into your hair line. You will either be going from a longer beard into shorter hair or have longer hair and transitioning into a shorter beard. First step for me is to look at the hair above the sideburns and see what length it is. For example, with a longer beard transitioning into shorter hair, let's say my hair sits at 3mm (or a #1 clipper guard) just above my sideburns and I want my beard to be 4mm all the way around. I would start with the 4mm at the bottom of the sideburn and make a pass to the 3mm hair line. Then move to the 3.5mm setting, start half way up on the sideburn and make another pass to the 3mm hair line. Trim the rest of the beard at 4mm and you will have a smooth 4mm to 3mm transition from beard through sideburns into the lower hair line. Conversely, lets say your hair is at 6mm (or a #2 clipper guard)and you want a 4mm beard around. I'd start with the 6mm setting, and make a pass from the beard up through the sideburns into the hair. Then switch to the 5mm setting, and make another pass up at 3/4 of the previous. Switch again, to the 4.5mm, and make another pass up half the distance of the first to a little lower than mid sideburn. Finish up with the 4mm all the way around the rest of the beard and leading into the bottom of the sideburn for a smooth 4mm to 6mm. Hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks for being part of the GroomReviews community! All the best!

Is this trimmer gentle to skin when using it in low trim? I have sensitive skin, especially in mustache part. If the trimmer is not gentle to the skin sometimes I'm having little whiteheads in mustache part after low trimming. I used to shave with nude trimmer (without attachment) for having 2 or 3 day looking beard but haven't tried this model. Mine is quite old. It is very important for me to know review about this point for this trimmer.
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, Aram. Regarding skin sensitivity, what I can tell you is what Philips Noreclo claims in their marketing. They describe the Series 5100 as having "skin-friendly, high-performance blades for the perfect trim." They also say the steel blades have "rounded tips and combs to help prevent skin irritation." As far as myself, I found no issue with trimming around the mustache. And if using the beard comb to the 0.4mm setting, the comb is all that is coming in contact with your skin. If you remove the beard comb, you can shave directly onto the skin. We each have our unique skin sensitivities and what doesn't bother me could cause an irritation for you. I can not give a definitive answer as to how this product will work in your case, but would suggest testing it out from a retailer with a good return policy to see how it performs. Thanks for watching and being part of the GroomReviews community! All the best!

@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, Mobile Gaming. Thank you for the positive feedback and support of the channel. I greatly appreciate it. For 5 o'clock shadow, I recommend you take a look at my latest video on the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 5500 seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aSEF_AOenW8.html. In this video I compare the 5500 to the Series 5100, as this is basically the next version of the Series 5100. The Beard Trimmer 5500 comes with greater battery life, more/higher increment length settings, and an upgraded design. It's a newer product to Amazon, but currently holds positive rating of 4.3 out of 5: amzn.to/2WeGVvK. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and being a member of the GroomReviews community! You didn't mention trimming the mustache just above the lip, which is a tricky part for me. How good is this beard trimmer for that?
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, John. The way that the beard trimmer attachment is shaped, it allowed for me to trim the mustache area without a problem. The profile of the attachment is slightly tapered in the front and I was able to work away at the mustache without the attachment getting in the way of my nose, to achieve that stubble look I was going for, as seen in the video. Thanks for watching and being part of the GroomReviews community! All the best!

First of all, this channel is very helpful. I am actually looking for an electric shaver or trimmer that would give me that 5’o clock shadow look but would also be decent enough for body use ( legs in particular). I don’t really want to break the bank so 60$ is the absolute max I would entertain. What do you recommend boss?
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, Jean-Caesar Morales. Thank you for the positive feedback and for your question. Of the trimmers that I have reviewed to-date, the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 is definitely one of the top performers on the beard and I've received much positive feedback from the GroomReviews community on their use with it. The shorter guards definitely cut for me and I can achieve the 5 o'clock shadow with them, as well as with only the metal trimmer attachment, which cuts to 0.5mm. This trimmer is also made for head and body. If you need to trim your legs, this trimmer should be able to get the job done. The only issue I hear on body hair sometimes is that people prefer a faster, corded device, rather than a cordless trimmer to get through the hair. Additionally, some think the cutting width is not wide enough. But that said, I have no doubt that the Multigroom 7000 will cut, but I always suggest that you test out a product, if possible, and see how it works to your liking. Currently, the Multigroom 7000 is just under $50 on Amazon, which is within your $60 budget. Check out my review of the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 here and see what you think: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eFn0Si1Bmyc.html . Hope this helps. GroomReviews Thank You for the response. Super helpful advise. I currently use that same trimmer but the 3000 version. I just feel like its not that powerful and it takes way too long to trim down my face . Im thinking the 7000 may be a cut above in that regard? 🤔
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, Jean-Caesar Morales. The Multigroom 7000 is definitely an upgrade from the Multigroom 3000, and one of the better trimmers I've reviewed. Just looking at its battery life, you already know it's packing more power. However, if you are looking for optimal power, you are going to get the most from a corded device. Wahl has a wide variety of corded trimmers that you will see many barbers use when beard trimming in their shops. Unfortunately, I don't have a corded trimmer review to steer you towards, at the moment. Hopefully I will get to them in the near future. All the best!

Hi, THaTHoLyDuDe. Thanks for your question. If you haven't already, you can check out my video review of the OneBlade Pro here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vFIM-glkvDg.html. I would definitely recommend the Philips Norelco Series 5100 Beard and Head trimmer over the OneBlade Pro. Once you take a look at the video, you'll know why ;) . I've bought a Multigroom 7000 not too long ago, and I would love to have more length options. Would you reccomend buying this even though I have a 7000?
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, BlaZe iT. Hope all is well. Thank you for the question. In your case, if you are looking for those very close increment settings, the Philips Norelco Series 5100 definitely can get you there. As you can see in the video, with the beard comb attachment, it cuts in 0.2mm increments from 0.4mm to 2mm, 0.5mm increments from 2mm to 5mm, and 1mm increments from 5mm to 7mm. If there is a length option that falls within these ranges that you really want to achieve, then the Series 5100 is something I'd consider. It's not the precision trimmer of the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000, however, since you have the 7000 trimmer already, it could give you the perfect combination with it's cutting length advantage. One thing to think about is the cost. The Series 5100 runs around $45 on Amazon right now, which is similar or around what you may have paid for the Multigroom 7000. But, if the benefit of having the ability to cut at those smaller increments is high, then the price won't matter much. Of note, as you see in the video, with this trimmer I trim in the upward direction as this is how the comb attachments are designed. Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know. Thanks for watching and your continued support of the channel! I appreciate it! All the best!

@@GroomReviews Hi, thanks for the comprehensive answer! I usually trim my beard downwards. Can you do that with the 5100, even though it's not designed to be used that way?
@GroomReviews
@GroomReviews 5 лет назад
Hi, BlaZe iT. You are most welcome. I usually trim my beard downwards, as well, as I'm sure you've seen in my previous videos. With this device and it's hair lift comb technology, Philips Norelco suggests trimming against the direction of hair growth for the most effective trim. I hadn't tested it out going downward, however, looking in the instructions, Philips notes that since all beard hairs do not grow in the same direction, you may want to try different trimming positions (i.e. upwards, downwards, or across). Hope this helps!
