Don’t be like them! Babies are the ones who associate their personal value to the toys they have in their hands at the moment. An overemphasis on kit is part of an infantile phase of pre-operative development. Babies think in terms of single objects rather than systems. Pre-operative means: NOT YET OPERATING!
The Preoperational Cognitive Development of Bearded Babies (acting like a baby 2 to 7 years of age). Piaget's 4 Stages of Cognitive Development Explained:
Major characteristics and developmental changes during this stage:
• Not yet thinking systematically, still thinking emotionally
• Focus on objects, learning to associate words and pictures to represent objects, for example: “Marines have ACOGs, therefore people with ACOGs are Marines.”
• Tend to be egocentric and struggle to see things from the perspective of others
• Getting better with language and thinking, but still tend to think in terms of objects and things rather than systems and applicability
At this stage, bearded babies learn through pretend play but still struggle with logic and taking the point of view of other people. They also often struggle with understanding the idea of constancy.
Bearded babies become much more skilled at pretend play during this stage of development, yet they continue to think very concretely about the world around them.
For example, a researcher might take a lump of clay, divide it into two equal pieces, and then give a bearded baby the choice between two pieces of clay to play with. One piece of clay is rolled into a compact ball while the other is smashed into a flat pancake shape. Because the flat shape looks larger, the preoperational bearded baby will likely choose that piece, even though the two pieces are exactly the same size.
