The song "I Love Music" by Ahmad Jamal from 1970's “The Awakening” was sampled by two different legendary producers. One instance of this sample is from the song “Me or the Papes” by Jeru The Damaja, which was produced by DJ Premier - and the other is “The World is Yours” by Nas, which was produced by Pete Rock.
Today, we’re putting these two beats head to head - diving into the production, the producers, the story of the original sample, and determining who did it best. Who’s beat will reign supreme?

You have to get the vst plugin SP1200 called SP950 effect plugin and throw it on pete rock samples to get the most accurate results. Also need a tape simulator and fat analog compression on the drums to achieve more accurate DJ Premier feel on those drums. Very important :)

Jazz Records are the perfect place to look for samples. The reason is because Jazz is REALLY dynamic, with so much changing throughout the song a producer is really likely to find at least one part that they can sample.

First things first.... As a fan of music, hip-hop, & the art of sampling, I truly love this channel. Secondly, your breakdown & presentation of each song & the sample being flipped was amazing. Finally... I simply cannot choose who flipped this sample better. Primo & Pete doing what they do best makes it a tough call. If we are going strictly off of the metric of sampling purposes & not impact, then Primo actually takes this one. Similar to what he did with Mass Appeal, Premier use very little of the sample, but does so much with it. That alone gets my vote for "Me or the Papes".... Like everyone in this comment sections though, I mean come on.... It's "The World Is Yours"......

@@diggingthegreats @nonamer29 All right, if you like, "It's On You", Google - Nas - "One On One," which flips the same piano section as Pete's beat but swings it just a little bit more. Always thought it was Large Pro, but it turns out it's, Chris Large & 'Mr. Freaknasty,' Raoul Santiago. And also, if you are impressed with "Ahmad Impresses Me," Da Beatminerz flipped a better version in '96 called "Change" for their group, "Shadez of Brooklyn", who they were working with at the time. "Change" was notably featured on Premier's, "New York Reality Check 101" LP. It's grittier/"Dustier", and overall got more of that 'mid-90's Brooklyn Underground" vibe with Beatminerz' distinct crunchier snares.

Long-time watcher, first-time commentator: really appreciate the time you put into these. They're all well-produced (no pun intended) and insightful and as a '90s dude, very much speaks to my sonic sensibilities. (Plus, you got a bunch of my friends' books on your book shelf so that's always fun to see.) I've been listening to "DJ Premier Is In Deep Concentration" since it came out and I never realized that Primo layered the Kool & the Gang "Summer Madness" sample with Jamal's keys too. I just learned something new

He is commonly mentioned alongside J Dilla. I love his sound and I think it's right up your alley too. I am really curious how many connections you could create with Nujabes, his production and samples he used, especially that he used a large variety of jazz and jazzy like samples, just like Premier and Pete you were showing in this video!

Watching this video and others like it,for me there is no competition it's love and respect for the technique of the differences of getting the same song to produce two different sounds of beautiful hip hop joints. These old jazzy grooves are what made me love groups like tribe called quest, pete rock and cl,and others but then to see the work of samples they put into the music gave me even more respect for their sound. Love the video. As you state at the end, that's me,I've always said if I had the talent all my music would cross genres because from my travels I can hear things in the most unsuspecting sounds that would be incorporated in my songs that would literally catch ppl off guard, that's what gets me about many artists I like,it seems as if,like me,they have a great ear for different things and a mental and actual musical library to build on.
