Beat SCAD Conference, 14 October 2023: Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection - The Power of Patients and Research as a Driver for Change
Dr David Adlam and Dr Tina Chrysochou, Professor Lis Neubeck and Dr Anne Scott answer questions from delegates.
00:00:40 How do you know when you’ve had a heart attack or a heart event?
00:02:24 Is SCAD a disease? When filling in insurance quote forms do we have to tick the box that asks if we have heart disease? Do you have to say you’ve had a heart attack recently if you’ve just had an episode of chest pain that wasn’t a heart attack, eg ongoing angina?
00:05:24 When will pulsatile tinnitus go away?
00:07:19 What is the relevance of tortuous coronary arteries and turbulent flow in relation to SCAD? Is it suggestive of a risk of coronary artery disease?
00:09:30 Is more research being done on how to check the healing process, particularly non-invasive methods?
00:11:35 Once SCAD has healed, why do we need to keep taking medication?
00:13:36 Should SCAD patients be mindful of renal conditions as a result of heart attacks/disease?
00:17:04 If CT scans don’t have the best resolution, is there a better way to do a head-to-hip scan?
00:20:44 If a SCAD is an isolated incident and if it’s healed completely, why is it still classed as a heart disease?
00:22:27 Is it OK for SCAD patients to have dental local anaesthetic containing adrenaline?
00:23:40 If your cardiologist has a good understanding of SCAD, should you still be referred to a SCAD clinic?
00:25:21 Is it safe to have botox when you suffer from migraines if you’ve had a SCAD? Can SCAD patients take Rimegepant for migraines?
00:28:01 Is there anything the patient group can do to encourage donations for future research from funding bodies?
00:30:28 How do cardiologists decide whether to use non-invasive methods or to do an angiogram to diagnose SCAD?
00:33:31 Are collagen supplements of any benefit to SCAD patients?
00:34:09 How can SCAD survivors help researchers with dissemination and implementation of findings?
00:38:20 Are there any links between Covid and SCAD?
00:40:48 After a SCAD patient has recovered, what is the recommended best practice within A&E for new, different, acute chest pain?
00:43:20 What is the cause of chest pain after SCAD? Is it just healing or something else? Is there anything that can be done about it or should patients just rest and take paracetamol? Is the timing of post-SCAD chest pain linked to periods?
00:46:50 Why are CT scans of coronary arteries challenging?
00:47:45 Regarding exercises we ‘shouldn’t do’ - can you put this in the context of months and years?
00:50:45 How can we get SCAD added to the NHS conditions list on the website?
00:51:55 Have we been able to access data logged under the SCAD diagnostic code (ICD-11) which was adopted in 2022 (www.who.int/news/item/11-02-2022-who-s-new-international-classification-of-diseases-(icd-11)-comes-into-effect)
00:52:57 Can SCAD patients give blood? Find out more about whether heart patients can give blood at www.bhf.org.uk

On 18-01-2021 I had my scad. Thankfully no invasive treatment was needed and after 1 year I came off all medications. The biggest challenge has been dealing with the psychological effects of the scad. Not knowing why the scad occurred (I have no history of high blood pressure or arteriosclerosis) it was difficult to come to terms with this episode in my life. I had therapy which helped me with my anxiety.
