Iron Mountain Road, on the fringe of Custer State Park in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, is an incredible drive worth putting on your bucket list. There are 3 tunnels you will drive through, so Iron Mountain Road has vehicle height and width limitations that make driving an RV not permissible.
However, most other vehicles, and motorcycles, in particular, can easily navigate Iron Mountain Road in what will be 30-45 minutes of driving what can only be compared to a natural roller coaster.
The best way to drive Iron Mountain Road is from south to north, beginning near the Custer State Park entrance by the State Game Lodge. Follow the road north toward Keystone to enjoy 3 tunnels, one with a remarkable view of Mount Rushmore!
If you combine this drive with Needles Highway to complete a loop you will have driven some of the most spectacular scenery in the American West.

Very nice, beautiful scenic drive there. Those tunnels looked pretty tight, had me sucking my gut in! Lol Thanks for taking us along What were the heights on those tunnels? Were you in a car our your motorhome?

Yes, the tunnels are tight but much much larger than the one on the Needles Highway by the Eye of the Needle.

The tunnels are tight, but as the other comment shares, not as tight as Needles. We actually hit our sideview mirror in Needles! And no RV. We have a truck we are able to borrow while we're here and we use that to explore. No RVs are allowed on either Iron Mountain Road or Needles Highway.

Seeing those Yukon bison is pretty cool too! They are wild enough there that you never know when you'll see them... until you do! Most days in the Black Hills we knew we'd see the bison somewhere, whether we wanted to or not, lol! Definitely a beautiful part of the state!
