I think she was a bit on the fence up to a point, who to support. If anything, Alicent respects and obeys authority and there was this conflict: the authority of Viserys who appointed Rhaenyra and the authority of her father who wants Aegon on the throne. I think it's only when she misinterprets Viserys's last words that she finally commits fully to supporting Aegon, only then is the conflict solved for her as she now believes Viserys also wanted Aegon. I think before that she would have been more open to some compromise, if Rhaenyra could guarantee her sons' safety. At least that's how I interpret it.

@@rohanshende4338 That's an unpopular opinion, to be sure. I mean, I disagree based on what I know, I mean Viserys did leave Rhaenyra. It is what it is. However, I am more sympathetic to the Greens. I don't think Otto or Alicent are necessarily as bad as many view them as. He seems to know the game and he's playing it. Hate the game, not the player. As for Alicent, people condemn her for being so... obedient to authority, but I'm more sympathetic to that. I mean, there is a limit, but she's doing her duty.

On the contrary I have utmost respect for Aegon for denying the crown (and only accepting it to save his siblings), and for riding for his own battles (something book Rhaenyra never did). I’ve noticed that Alicent raised three sort of nutty kids (some very nutty) while so far Rhaenrya raised two amazing boys who’d probably have been great kings (I haven’t read so if all her kids die I don’t know so I’m not spoiling). Did anyone else get this feeling?

Funny thing about Daemon helping Viserys is... it was improvised. The crown fell by mistake, that wasn't supposed to happen, but they just rolled with it.

@@AK-pw3oq There is a huge difference between the Throne and ruling one noble house. Rhaenyra's kids are also not twin-cest born bastards from a Non-Targ house. Finally, Stannis' problem was never "Baratheon blood should rule" it was that by law the throne was HIS. Vaemond just babbles about "Velaryon Blood" continuing to rule their house, and the solution provided solved that.

However you are correct about Vaemond ultimately being incorrect about his inheritance succeeding because his bloodline is in jeopardy, because the Rhaenys deal still keeps the blood in the inheritance. However bastardy is still a major roadblock.

Vaemond never had much of a claim anyway, as it were acknowledged that Rhaenyra's sons were bastards and that Laenor died without issue then the next in line to inherit Driftmark would be his sister Laena and then her twin daughters. The law and tradition in most of Westeros has long been that daughters inherit after sons but before brothers, uncles, or cousins. Also, in the books at least, there have been so many intermarriages between Targaryens and Velaryons that Rhaenrys herself has about as much Velaryon blood as Vaemond does.

First she’s supposed to get the crown that was originally promised to Rhaenys, then it’s made clear in the show that she’s not happy that Rhaenyras three children don’t belong to Laenor, even though she knows laenor had his part in it, and it wasn’t completely Rhaenyra‘s fault, and then she loses her daughter, which she unfairly blames Daemon for and Daemon can’t help what happens in childbirth or laenas decision and then immediately loses her son weeks later, and Rhaenyra and Daemon take no time in getting married, and then before this shoddily put together proposal rhaenyra was trying to place her son as the heir to driftmark even though Rhaenys thinks that that should belong to baela as Laena first child. I really think the only reason she excepted Rhaenyras proposal is she thought it would help and she took in account her granddaughters wishes and place it over her own resentments of the situation. I don’t think she just magically got over all of her history with Rhaenyra and Daemon.

If they would tell the truth about Laenor, then Rhaenyra's younger sons with Daemon could be regarded as bastards too.

@@aaronia8092 yeah but they could’ve told Rhaenys in private because I think Rhaenys would’ve let him go but letting her believe her only other child was murdered only weeks after her daughters death is still pretty bad even though they didn’t kill him but it’s just glossed over a lot of time in the fandom. Daemon and rhaenyra are my favorite characters but I hate when fans white wash them and try to act like they’re not morally grey people.

He didn't train Rhanerya and refuse to look after her? That's exactly what he is been doing the entire show. He told the profecy, the first episodes he was trying to get her allies in the court through wedding, allies that are still with her by the end of the seasons, she messed up, by refusing to talk to him because of Alicent, then messed up with Daemon and Sir crispy, so he had to cover that up, we don't know much because of timeskip but she was part of the council with him taking part in big decision, so she learned kingship with him. Rhaenyra messed up multiple times, despite him warning her about and he had to support her regardless and he did it. He mostly an absent father for his other kids but it mostly because he getting sick the more they growing up

At the end his mariage wasn't a problem, even Otto was neutralized, but Rhaenyra actions made her enemy of Alicent who raised the kids especially with the idea that he will be killed if he doesn't become King. Even before Viserys told her the winter prophecy in the first episode, Rhaenyra was trying to say that he ignored her since her mother passed away (we know as the audience he was grieving in his own way) but now talking about prophecy. It made Rhaenyra think she was alone in her grief. For all she knows that the Targaryen that would sit on throne could be anyone and that currently she's just a replacement for Daemon. Then in the 6 months leave we can see that the distance just grew and grew more, probably because it's a Targaryen nature to distance themselves in their grieving moments or maybe because Viserys and Daemon aren't the right persons when it comes to situations about their personal grief. When Rhaenyra tried to speak in council about sending dragon riders to triachy, Viserys's decision wasn't wrong but didn't bother to elaborate why sending dragon riders wasn't the right choice to her later on. He just said "you'll learn" to her which made her feel isolated. Viserys and Rhaenyra again had a chance to mend that relationship but Viserys again didn't explain to her that the one he most likely is going to marry isn't Laena but Alicent which just indicated he didn't put the realm's need but his own above everything else. It's not like her opinion matters in the king's matters but Viserys most likely knew the dynamics between both friends and that's also the reason why he stopped Alicent from telling Rhaenyra anything about their meetings. Viserys, Daemon and Alicent were the only people Rhaenyra could confide in about her inner turmoil and how she should handle the future situations but in that moment she felt betrayed with all of them. Rhaenyra didn't handle the situation for the next 3 years wisely being a loathing person when she should be gathering allies and Viserys's way of approach for conversations didn't help either. We saw it in the tourney the way Viserys said that "you might have that in common" about Jason Lannister's proposal. He should've handled these situations (about her having to marry and make alliances) in the same way he did later on by the end of episode 3. By accepting his flaws and reassuring her about her position. From then onwards it was purely Rhaenyra's fault for f*cking up with both Daemon and Criston when she should've been looking for a match from big houses and making alliances. Here Viserys should've either pass the title to Aegon logically seeing Rhaenyra's incompetence or at least punish her for her actions. Viserys told her the real prophecy only then which finally knocked some sense in her. However Viserys again chose Laenor, his nephew who is already rumoured about his gayness, just to appease his past mistake with House Velaryon. Now regarding Rhaenyra having 3 illegitimate children, I personally can't blame her because as it's mentioned, they tried but couldn't have any children together. However I do hold her accountable for not having 1 but freaking 3 illegitimate children. Here too Viserys never holds her accountable for her actions or passes down any type of inner punishment that others wouldn't know off. Viserys's problem is that he goes too lenient on his family and objects to the point that it stirs problems, be it with his children, his council or in political decision makings. He doesn't take actions when they should be due but takes them when it's past the mid term which instead of helping, could backfire on him such as him firing Otto. It doesn't matter if he fires Otto now when his daughter is already a Queen and mother of male heirs. Making Otto an official enemy in that moment is just cherry on top in digging his own grave. There's a lot I want to express that makes Viserys a bad father and king (in his decisions not as a person) but for now I can only explain his dynamics with Rhaenyra. If I start talking about his children with Alicent, his decisions in politics then it'll go too long.

@@GlennShook No I dont think he wanted to continue. I think Aemond somehow admires Daemon (a bit in secret). When he calls the fight out, he leaves. In another time they would have been very close sadly is the Dance of the Dragon time. As the main comment says, Aemond is less volatile with a large sense of duty, while Daemon is more volatile still loving his family.

Actually parents have some responsibility for the actions of their children, not legally but morally. If you raise your kid wrong way and after that he does terrible things there is your partial fault.

It also gets even trickier if you factor in mental illness among other things. I could teach my children to never put money above another human then he grows up to become a millionaire and fires someone because it could save his business more money than keeping him employed. That’s not the core value I taught him but that’s what he wants to do with his life

You exactly see that in how different the sons of Alicent are. Meaning it's not how she raised but their personality. Aegon has a worse personality than that of Helaena or Aemond (or Daeron) so... there's nothing about it that Alicent can change.

And yet...if Aegon hadn't been a rapey drunk, Alicent might look on him in a better way.

I strongly disagree with this as someone who loved most of the book liberties the show took this wasn’t a good one. The end of episode 9 makes no sense in so many ways. First Rhaenys killed hundreds of innocent people to just look cool and didn’t even end the war by killing Aegon so she simply killed people for no reason. They thought it looks cool so let’s do it even when it makes no sense. Also I wish Aegon had Sunfyre there like in the book so she couldn’t do that freely because Sunfyre would defend Aegon. So basically the series made Rhaenys a mass murdered for no reason except a scene that looks cool but just makes things more confusing.

She didn't create all her problems I don't remember her making Alicent marry her dad which complicates her succession , her having Basterds are not the root of the issue nor does it justify Alicent userping rhenerya in favor of her rapist son.

I mean, even to Rhaenyra he was a pretty bad father if you count the events from episodes 1 and 2. Drove her mother into an early grave with his desire for a male heir, then stole her best friend. Frankly IMO Viserys was not a good king, nor a good father, nor a good husband... But there's a lot of pathos in someone realizing his mistakes too late and trying desperately, with the last of his strength, to set things right.
