MIchael Sull is the worlds foremost expert on Spencerian Script and ornamental penmanship. He travels the world teaching this somewhat obscure art.
Recently, I had the chance to visit with him in his studio. He and I are very good friends, and it had been a long time since we had gotten together. I ribbed him a little about not keeping in touch, applying a friendly little guilt trip on him. He then offered to letter my wife's name. Of course we accepted. She and I watched as this masterful piece came to life. After he finished, he looked up at me, and asked "Am I now forgiven, Robbie?" [for not keeping in touch] I responded quickly by saying, "Yes, now do my name." We all laughed.
I apologize for the quality of the video as it was from my iPhone. I had to bend over slightly to get a good shot, and the camera shakes a bit while my back was feeling the pain- but it was worth it.
After about 20 minutes of recorder, I had to stop before Mike had completed it. But I do show the final piece at the end of the video. It's absolutely stunning!
I also apologize for the quality of the audio, but to be honest, it's about the lettering, not the commentary. :)
I hope you enjoy this. My wife loves the piece and she has it proudly framed.
-Thanks Mikey, for the lovely work.
Rob

I'm studying Spencerian from Mr. Sull's books and it's very helpful to see him write in real-time. It's heartening to see that even a master penman sometimes hunches over his work and uses finger movements, and that re-touching is allowed.

bbqstud... sorry about the quality of the video. It was a spur of the moment situation, and all I had was my cellphone. Had I known he was going to do it, I would have set up a camera on a tripod, and gotten the lighting right. Oh well. I think poor quality is better than no video at all.

What is that fountain pen called?

It's an oblique pen (dipped in ink), not a fountain pen.

Don't let that stop you from giving it a try--one of the greatest penmen of the 19th century was born without hands.

Since I posses hands I am almost obligated to proceed after finding out some fellow did it with his feet......

In its written form, English is. a 'left to right' language. Urdu, Persian and ARabic , on the other hand , are written 'Right to Left'. And most people are right handed. And if you check calligraphy in ARabic and Persian and Urdu, you will find the most beautiful art- most of them written by right handed people. so being left handed should not be an issue. :-)

He is awesome, but that camera shaking makes me feel sick. Use a tripod or something next time.

Sorry about that. This was a spontaneous moment, and I made it for my wife... but decided to share it.
