This technology would also make an excellent desoldering tool. For example one laser handpiece that would accept tips each of which will have mirrors right above the pins of the ic to be desoldered. Or movable mirrors with micro servos!

jep and there where other mistakes that had to be manually removed as well but on the other hand awsome! need to get a powerful laser and do a handhelt version.

You take a multilayer pcb with an exceptionally thick ground plane, and this would blow away ERSA or jade soldering by far. For that matter, in the case of fine pitch soldering, especially on a lead free assembly, this would do what cannot currently be done with either of those methods. I like this!

For those who are wondering what this method is good for; some optoelectronic components are temperature sensitive and cannot be soldered using an oven or soldering iron. This method localize the heat on the joint to be soldered, so the component itself does not heat as much.

This would actually be quite useful for soldering some of the smaller components when you need to minimize heat dissipation into the part itself. Sensitive MSL components immediately come to mind.

meaning not very strong solder joint. you really need the soldering metal to be hot too so it can be wet with solder

jSkrat Nyarlathotep you can tell by the joint that it has even surface tension and cohesion all the way out to the corners of the pad you can only do this with adequate heat (over heating is another story) These SMT pads do not take much to heat up. Now some heavy copper PCB pads or through holes with grounds that are common to one big plane may be a different story but you can always preheat the entire board in an oven for that scenario.

This is really cool! Probably slow as heck compare to a reflow oven, but I can see where it would be useful. Maybe on boards with components with vastly different soldering temperatures, like some DDPAKs on big ground planes or screw lugs or standoffs right next to plastic connectors and sensors. And maybe with repair and rework of existing boards.

This is one of the options for local soldering, which is desirable for temperature-sensitive components, thin PWBs(when warpage is a big concern), and rework.
