The Beauty, the Serenity, the Elation and Joy! And it gets better in Nova Scotia. The joy just carried over upon meeting East Coast FIBERISTS like The Mariner's Daughter, a Hat Junkie, the belles of Gaspereau Valley Fibres, the caretakers of the Hooked Rug Museum and all the regular folk who represent the friendly hospitality that is the Eastern Coast of Canada. The beauty...just open your eyes. A fisherman's shack on a tranquil cove, the spray & rush of the waterfall a stone's throw away...can you say mesmerization!! There is no word...I just made one up. The ocean's beckoning at every turn. Lighthouses and deep-rooted Canadian History...the beginning of a New Canada. So proud, so enthralled to meet fellow Canadians in places one only imagines being in the reality of distant locales seen since forever in images everywhere. And now you are HERE...THERE! Beautiful Nova Scotia. Come & go again please! YES.

As a quilter, the fabrics in the shop are making want to scream.(Heidi’s shop). Beautiful yarn too. I love that way she kept sheep. It is completely possible to have a cruelty free wool industry but It is so rare to find people who are willing to do things differently. The milliner shop… I have no words … I am a super fan of of hats. Any occassion is good to wear a hat, and if it’s windy, put a pin on it. I wear hats all year round and that shop is amazing! I could do some terrible damage there expanding my collection of fedoras, trilbies, berets, cloches, … I love all her creations. What a treat of wonderful shops. Thank you for sharing.

If you ever come back to Nova Scotia and make it over to Cape Breton Island, I'd be happy to point you in the direction of the amazing fibre artists on our magical isle. We're blessed to have such a rich community of fibre artists throughout the province, including many working on re-localizing fibre production (did you make it to Taproot, which grows flax and processes it into linen? they are just down the road from the oh so gorgeous Gaspereau Valley Fibres, where I've been privileged to teach natural dyeing and shibori). Thank you for such a lovely profile of just a few of our province's amazing fibre artists.

It warms my heart that you two loved Nova Scotia! We are SO lucky to live in such a beautiful and friendly place filled with the fibre arts in every corner! Echoing what others are saying for your next trip - Cape Breton is a must! Take a drive up the west coast of the island and visit Opulent Alpaca who even produce their own yarn on site with a Mini Mill from Belfast Mini Mills. Then continue up to Cheticamp to go to the Rug Hooking Museum and Flora's and Lola's Rug Hooking Shops. Cheticamp hooked rugs are an art form in it's own right and unfortunately it is diminishing as many of the artists are in their 90's. If you are lucky you'll be able to catch Tracy with Tracy's Rolling Yarn Shop at her ever changing locations! Can't wait for the next episode! Happy Holidays! -Allie

I visited the Mariner’s daughter in 2019 and remember it fondly because as soon as I walked I noticed that the walls were “ wallpapered” with nautical charts and went to look at the one facing the door and found that it was a chart of Heriot Bay BC, which is where I catch the ferry to come to my own home island of Cortes. So I felt right at home on the opposite side of the country! And they had great yarn then and it looks like even more so now. And the Hat Junkie was just down the street from our Airbnb but sadly was closed when I went by.

Just started watching you guys (my name is Jaime!) This was so wonderful and makes me want to visit. I love hearing about the history of your visits, too. I used to watch a public television station when I was a kid, and liked watching I think it was Rick Steves?? Where he would travel and this reminds me so much of that. And I absolutely looove maple bacon donuts!

Hi. I hope you can help me out with a question. I recently gathered Garry Oak (BC) which had been felled to make way for more developments. Not wanting to see this tree go to waste, I took some of the fallen leaves (ok, a bucket full) and filled it with water, leaving it now for 3 weeks. It smells a bit rotten - which I guess makes sense. I placed some stained kitchen cloths in the mix after a few days and left them for a few days up to a week or so and they became a dank grey colour. Not brown. I believe the tree was felled in autumn. How do I use the mighty Oak constituents to get a lovely brown or dark beige or anything like that? When is a good time to pick the products of the oak to get the brown I am after? Tx!
