Here we take a tour of Libby The Stag, a beautiful 1976 Triumph Stag Mark 2, owned by Robin Scales, who is a Museum Attendant at the British Motor Museum.
We came across this stunning pimento Stag while filming the last ever Triumph Stag to come off the production line and drove it at the British Motor Museum, and had a wonderful chat with Robin about the history of his Mark 2 Stag, taking care of it over the years and how he even came to have a Triumph Stag in the first place.

Not sure he means Damson was the original colour as that had been discontinued by 1976, does he mean Magenta? Also the Stag engine was not being developed by Saab it was the Dolomite 1850 engine that Saab used which they highly modified (made better) and eventually put a Turbo on.

Damson was dropped in 72 on the Stag, magenta was dropped at N Reg [so late 74] the only other reds in production, were Carmine, pimento and Signal. flamenco was only on the last S reg and T reg's. i think it must have been Carmine.

Why did they design a crap 3 litre V8 when they had a perfectly good 3.5 or a 150 bhp 2.5 straight six or could have possibly used BMCs 3 litre straight six? In fact why even design the Stag anyway when they could have sorted the TR6, GT6 or even the Spitfire? I just missed a 2.5 powered MkIV Spit which had been fitted with proper IRS rear suspension a few years ago. Now that was a car. Then they cane up with that wedge shaped abortion I won't even name. No wonder they went bust!

I think the quality of the way the Stag was put together is largely thought to be the cause of many problems with the car back in the 70's (that and the strikes)..Including casting sand left in the block after manufacture, causing hot spots and consequent over heating/head gasket issues, that dealerships never really got to the bottom of i.e. they just kept putting new head gaskets in!! You're right, all this bad PR caused the demise of otherwise what was a brilliant car. Indeed, once they are sorted then the engines/cars are very reliable these days. We've had several reports of Grand Tours recently by 'Arry The Stag! fans. Including one who has had a European journey of many hundreds of miles and another who's just driven nearly 3,300 miles in theirs around Canada without fault. All the best TR Tony

The stag V8 isn’t a crap engine as has been proved in recent years by many stag owners

Hey T rt how's the search for the 2500 s motor love the stag what is damson an everyone wants a tr6

Another lovely looking & sounding Stag. I think Damson (paint code 17) ceased to be a colour option around 70/71 so couldn't have been Damson originally from the factory as a 76 car. Don't think DVLA records would have recorded the colour as Damson , would probably have just been "red"? Maybe a quick check on the commission plate would resolve any confusion.

They did have a bad reputation granted - largely because of poor quality controls in their original manufacture. When up together however, they go very well indeed - we've just had one of our 'Arry The Staggers! for example who's recently completed a 3,269 round trip of Canada without a hitch! All the best TR T
