In the 70`s they made only 27000 of these cars, yes engine and falsely positioned water pump caused its demise. Now they are a collectors classic and much sought after car. The rover engine was sometimes used, but made the car not original. Since then the problems have been solved with the original Triumph engine, if you have deep pockets you can still buy them. Depending on the bodywork and condition they can be bought from £8000 up to £35000. I was lucky to have driven some Triumph Stags, the Sound from the V8 engine is very special.
I think a lot of the reliability issues and especially the overheating down to lack of thorough maintenance. This particular car has been owned for an excess of 20 years. He has a high-performance spare fan in the back as he had read about the overheating issues. Never once has it overheated. The fan remains in the box
Only by those that don’t own one! If these cars are dutifully and lovingly cared for; The survival rate is not to be ignored.. It is now excepted by the Club and ownership that if the engine is built right in the first place…and that was not guaranteed in the strike riddled 1970’s .. Quality control was very thin on the ground at this time and there was no money or will to develop the engine.. If the engine is built right and the simple but more often than the Handbook implies, maintenance regime is executed.. The engine is ( Whisper It) Reliable
