I can’t believe that people have the opportunity to restore and fix old pocket watches like these. What a beautiful 18th century pocket watch
@markchancellor-maddison5528
Hi Tommy, this is a very fascinating pocket watch and project. Thank you for sharing the strip down with us. I also need to start making watch wheels. Many thanks Mark Maddison, South Africa

The workmanship of those pillars is exquisite, and you clearly know exactly what you’re doing, I’m sure the watch will turn out even more beautiful when it’s finished.

That Verge.... what an absolutely beautiful movement! Thanks for sharing it's inner workings, that's the first time I've seen that kind of mechanism.... it would make for a truly entrancing item to have in a small display case (without it's silver case) so you could observe the amazing mechanical feat of it ticking over under that gorgeous filagree and watch the gears & tiny chain at work. It feels almost criminal to cover up that 18th century masterpiece of engineering.... lovely silver case or not! 👌

Another great video Tommy, stunning watch hard to believe its 1772 and the history behind it

Loved the video, Tommy. It would be great to have more on the older verge watches. There is almost nothing else on youTube about working on these really old ones. I have several, including a big pre-1700 James Markwick movement with its original silver dial. It tries to run but has some serious wear on the centre wheel pinion. Another watch I have is one of those fake London watches with continental style balance cock with two feet. It has a worn ratchet pawl on the fusee great wheel so can't be wound at present, but is otherwise in fair shape and complete. At any rate, thanks for taking the time to upload your videos. Very inspiring.

I'm really enjoying these Wednesday videos. The music box / typewriter sounds at the beginning are very nice. It's wonderful that you just happen to have lying around parts that fit a 250 year old watch.
@TommyJobson
@TommyJobson 2 года назад
That’s great to hear, thank you. The irony is that parts for a 250 year old watch are easier to find than parts for a modern Swiss watch!

Hi Active and Atom, thank you for the add, loved the disassembly and gathering of your replacement parts for the Verge and why it is called the Verge was fascinating to learn, we already belong to Reuben and we too loved his new location and plans moving in going forward, enjoyed today and thank you Tommy. We will add JPPalmer as well now. Lance & Patrick.

There were several manufacturers of that era that made parts for watchmakers. We should not presume that everything in old watches was made by the maker.

Great video, keep them coming. Thanks for showing us the C7 mechanism, it makes sense now. That is a superb verge watch and I think it is perfectly acceptable to repair the watch to make it work well. After all watches and clocks are mechanical devices that wear out and a "dead" watch or clock is not a lot of use. Further you are repairing it using contemporary parts so it will be as near as is possible to original condition and will not be heavily modified.
@TommyJobson

Thanks very much. Glad the C7 bit was useful.

Great stuff, Tommy - sometimes serendipity does happen, makes hoarding all those bits 'just in case' worthwhile (I'm guilty of the same affliction), because that missing tooth would have been a bugger to fix. Love those little boxes of spares - to die for! Looking forward to seeing the progress - lovely watch BTW.

The silly thing is I havee far more chance of finding a part for a 249 year old watch than a modern swiss watch. All in the name of progress!

I've heard its bad to touch a verge fusee without gloves because it can cause rust/oxidization on the movement, how true is that?

The name on the dial does not match the name engraved on the movement. Perhaps wedding bells are appropriate :)

Or its the name of the customer as was common
@TommyJobson
@TommyJobson 2 года назад
It looks right to me. It was fairly common for watches to have either a retailers name or sometimes even the original owners name on the dial. There is certainly no evidence of it being a marriage.
