With the newest addition to my bar, the Decent DE1XL, I of course had to put together a comparison with my current bar standard, the La Marzocco GS3 MP. Of course, both of these machines differ in massive ways, but also, have the some similar goals in terms of espresso fundamentals and barista control.

I’m a CIO so I work with technology 10-12 hours a day. While I marvel at the beautiful engineering and capabilities of the Decent, my GS3 feels like the last analog bulwark that’s preserving sanity in my life.

Oddly - or perhaps predictably - I am the same. Working in software, the thought of the Decent leaves me if not cold, then slightly chilled. In my case, my machine of choice is a La Pavoni, as an analog counter to my largely digital life. For the same reason, I eschew the ubiquitous Apple Watch for mechanical ones.

Well, most C level executives I know are more managers than programmers. Being a tech executive myself I carefully attach importance to reserve some time to operative project work for the same reason I’ve been owning a DE1 for years: I love software and I love programming. And if I can have coffee and programming at once, why should I only choose one? If I need some balance from tech in my spare time, I do sports.

This also applies to me-I was going to buy a Decent, but, as all of my life’s work has transited from analog to digital, I decided on a beautiful LaMarzocco Linea Mini. It’s extremely satisfying in its use and, yeah, it’s analog AF. My next machine, should there be one, will be a return to the argument: GS3 (probably Manual, assuredly second hand) or Decent?

During the Dark Times of the pandemic, I "got into" coffee, quite quickly developed a fascination with espresso, and ended up buying a DE1PRO. It's unsurprising that it appealed to me, as a techie and a software engineer, but it just has *so* many advantages over traditional machines. The relatively small weight and size are awesome, and it perfectly fits my usage pattern: a few shots a day. Turn it on, it's hot and ready to go in a few minutes, pull a shot, back off again. I don't have a machine sitting there turned on all day to stay hot, or waiting tens of minutes to heat up. I can appreciate how the interface intimidates some. You don't *have* to tinker with shot profiles though, you can just pick the profile that suits and stick with it. I believe there's a skin that massively simplifies the UI for folks who don't want to tinker. You can even use the machine without the tablet once it's set up, the profile configuration is stored on the machine itself and all the necessary controls are on the group head. The vibration pumps don't *sound* great compared to the rotaries in other machines. The drip and water trays are quite finnicky. And there are occasional software problems, unsurprising for a machine that's so software-oriented but annoying nonetheless. But those are my only complaints. I absolutely get the appeal of the traditional hunks of metal with tactile controls, but the Decent is the machine for me, and I don't see that changing anytime soon, if ever. I'm currently loving brewing with light-roasted coffees using a variation on the adaptive and blooming profiles. It's a complex profile, with a long halt after preinfusion, and a swap to flow profiling after pressurising. It gives consistently great results and is very forgiving of variation in puck prep thanks to the flow profiling. That amazing level of versatility is, as far as I'm aware, unique to the Decent.

I see that now. I guess this sort of begs the question, why isn’t this feature more prominently promoted? As someone who’s new to the Decent, I don’t recall any mention of this option on the quick start guide, or even hearing anyone talk about it when I’ve mentioned to lack of real-time control of the Decent. You don't lose the ability to make on the fly adjustments with the Decent, you can use the touchpad to change the pressure during a shot: 9 o clock is 9 bar, 6 o clock is 6 bar, etc. In that sense it works exactly like a paddle control, just digitally.

It's also worth noting the Decent can do SO much more than just straight espresso. You've got all sorts of shot types, allongés, spro-overs, filter coffee, tea. The options are so wide ranging. The compact size is also far more practical for most homes. ___ I personally don't love the button pressing for steaming and the button delay though. The Breville dual boiler is my favourite machine to steam with from an ergonomic perspective.

As a software developer, I would choose the GS3, but I would love to develop for the Decent. I know it sounds weird, but I have to be honest and say that mechanical stuff just works, and often even if something is broken (that isn't critical). True, and if that annoying bald guy from Decent suddenly dies, then goodbye the entire company and support I'd bet. I ain't putting all my trust into 1 single person, plus the fact it's gonna be super hard to service/repair locally, I ain't shipping something that expensive back to China if something happens, and good luck if it's out of warranty. Having so many new revision of their models, I'd be pissed too to buy one at about 5500$CAD then some months later there's a newer one and it can't be just upgraded by a firmware/software, I would regret my purchase.

In the four years I had the Decent, I only ever encountered one issue when my pressure sensor broke. They sent me a replacement with an express courier alongside a video on how to replace it. It only took me a few minutes to do so. I think the concerns in the video are overblown, because the support is excellent. With the Marzocco, I suppose, you are tied to your vendor, which may vary in reliability.
@hermitudinous
@hermitudinous 4 месяца назад
Agreed. Marzoccos are solidly built, but they do break down as much as any other. You’re right in that support from them is tied directly to the vendor - good luck if you purchased it secondhand. On the other hand, you still have the means to have a Decent serviced directly by them, no matter how or when you acquired it. The fears about Decent being sketchy for servicing are far overblown and, honestly, not at all well-researched. In fact, much of the criticism feels quite xenophobic. I’ve used and worked with (and sold) Marzoccos, Simonellis, Slayers, etc. Decent machines are by far some of the best bang for the buck, coffee or otherwise. High floor, ridiculously high ceiling, and quite approachable price point.

At the end of the day the subject is a cup of coffee. As a personal opinion, in today's society we are thought consumism and when a specific ceiling is reached we are presented with a next level product so that we keep on spending, the reasoning behind it being a better life experience but in truth same could be obtained from much cheaper product. I have at home a Lelit coffee machine, one with a build in grinder and I also have a separate grinder with flat burrs. All in all everything costed me less than €1000 and I can say with 100 percent certainly that my coffee at home is equal if not best than in 95% of coffee shops that use much more expensive equipment. I used to work as a barista so I know how to make coffee and I believe that this is much more important then how expensive your gear is. For example I went to someone that owns the Decent and had coffee from them and it was not even comparable to the coffee from my Lelit as in worse and my machine is 7-8 times cheaper.

the other thing not mentioned from an energy perspective is the Decent warm-up time is so fast, I can wake it from sleep, measure out beans, grind, load, tamp, and lock the PF in and most times the Decent is ready to pull a shot or I maybe wait one minute. No more timers and all the other planning to allow for a 20 minute warm-up. A friend comes over and wants a cup and I can be pulling a shot in under 5 minutes even if my machine is off.

One of the biggest reasons why I don't plan to upgrade anytime soon from my $150 thermoblock machine. I value the almost instant preheat much higher than the couple degrees temperature instability.
@bacca71
@bacca71 4 месяца назад
Very much liked this episode, and learned a few things. Have one concern though. What is the temperature of the shots 'water onto the puck' accuracy and variability between the GS3 and the DE1xl? Not just what it's set at. And assuming you have the correct offset value in the GS3 (mine was a little different than the factory set value, so needed a small but important adjustment. You'd have to use a Scace device and a Fluke recording thermometer to check offset, and then run your tests. I have a hard time conceiving how the uniformity (and precise temps) of a vibe pump and thermoblock system is going to match the precision and accuracy of a calibrated GS3 saturated group. I use a GS3-AV (plumbed) and love it's precision in brew temps, consistent weight of output and the ease of use. Just as someone else mentioned, waking up sleepy, walking to your machine, locking in the portafilter with fresh ground coffee and pushing a button to get totally repeatable results -- there is a significant difference in the approach used between a GS3-AV and GS3-MP -- different strokes for different folks. The AV is more efficient (coffee shop) oriented, the MP more for those who want hands-on control during a shot. I love the automatic (also has pre-infusion and pre-brewing - I tried them and prefer the taste not using them). Also less maintenance on an AV (no paddle valve) and less water waste (dumping water by the paddle mechanism to achieve a brew pressure). GS3-AV also great for lunch or dinner guests, the automatic dispensing allowing time to do other things (like steam while you're brewing a cup, or cleaning up). The big thing here though, are the two machines relative and accurate temperature profiles. If unanswerable, no problem, not many have calibrated Scace devices. Hard to come up with all these interesting episodes, this was an extra good one. Thanks again.

When doing blind taste you can't have two cups with different color because you actual perceive the color as taste. There is scientific study on it. That's why bristas uses different cup colors to highlight the notes.

Great review and comparison, as always. I suspect that the #1 reason why people will choose one of these machines over the next is usability and repairability. I wouldn't choose the Decent, for example, because the resulting espresso is slightly more clear and distinctive. Do you like your espresso with smooth rounded edges or sharp square corners? The simplicity of the La Marzocco wins for me and the fact that it's more easily repaired is a plus. The sound of a rotary pump is far more preferable to the sound of a vibration pump too. Also, I'm sure many people are tired of using connected smart devices for everything. I've said this before too. There is a middle ground between the La Marzocco and the Decent. It's the Ascaso Baby T Plus, which uses a rotary pump like the La Marzocco and a thermocoil design like the Decent. I could be wrong here but I think thermocoils are the future of semi-automatic espresso machines.

Qust two quick obeservations: the decent is not connected in any way (that's optional and you only really use it for firmware updates). You can use it completely without the tablet if you want. Second, the vibration pumps are on dampeners and nowhere near as annoying as on other machines, it's not loud in any way. Compared to my old Rocket Appartamento from a couple of years ago, the Decent purrs.

@@scviper Good observations. Yes, the vibration pump on the Decent is far quieter than others but, to my ears, is still annoying. Also, yes, you can use the Decent by using the controller but you'd be defeating the purpose of the why it was designed to be a smart appliance used with smart devices. For me, I'll take mechanical all day long. How do you improve a spoon?

A few things he didn't mention. The Decent doesn't have a safe place to put cups or a cup warming tray. The water tank setup isn't great .There is no lid on the water tank and when I got mine I ended up with bugs in the tank and was forced to spend money on a custom built lid. Steaming is less powerful and you can't steam and pull a shot at the same time, something I did regularly on my old E61. It relies heavily on Bluetooth which often failed and you then need to reboot the machine or reset Bluetooth. Someone described Bluetooth as Decen'ts achilles heel. There is no local support. I once had a leak on my old Giotto. I was not only able to speak to someone but had it repaired with available parts and had it home on the same day. Decent can't compete with that. So I ended up selling it as I wanted a more traditional machine with local support and a balance of style and technology. I ended up buying the San Remo YOU. I have a science background and thought the geekiness of the Decent would suit me but the novelty of constantly tweaking and experimenting wore off very quickly. Don't get me wrong the Decent is a good machine, just not for me.
@scviper
@scviper 4 месяца назад
I mean, you could also mention the positives of the Decent, if you're going that route: - you can get a warming tray attachment relatively cheap - you have a myriad of 3dprinted and profesionally made accesories which you don't get on other machines - possibility to use a bluetooth scale and VERY accurate stop by weight - they are making a water tank cover, I'm not sure if it's available yet. Even if it isn't, you can buy 3rd party ones. - if steam is a problem get the XXL version, it's insanely powerful. Still much cheaper than the GS3. It is true that pulling a shot and steaming at the same time is not possible, but the advantages of "fire and forget" with stop by weight, in my opinion, heavily outweigh this. - while bluetooth is sometimes unreliable, you don't need bluetooth in any way to pull shots. You don't even need the tablet. If the desired profile is selected you can do everything manually, from the touch surface of the group head. - while there is no local support, the support that exists is amazing. Not only do you have warranty for a very, very reasonable price, but you have the Decent Diaspora where you can get very valuable info directly from users and Decent themselves, plus excellent suport, warrany and shipping if any problems arise. - I understand getting tired of tweaking and experimenting, but... you don't have to? I got mine a couple of months ago and I really haven't touched it in the past month, except to maybe change the target weight on my profile, or occasionally switch to a different profile (I use 2). What exactly do you need to tweak?
@WasimBarri

My intention was to explain why I sold the Decent and why I wanted something different, not to list the positives and negatives. Prometheus did ask for preferences and I'm stating why the Decent isn't one of mine. I did however say it was a good machine. If your happy with it then good for you but I wasn't. It didn't tick all my boxes and obviously your boxes and priorities are different to mine. A lot of the work arounds you mentioned cost money. eg tank lid, cup warming tray, better steaming, etc. and I felt should be standard on a machine of this price. The accessories, add-ons and 3D prints are simply not necessary on the machine I bought and while stop at weight was a feature I did use and like I'm finding stop at volume is working just as well but I do admit I'd love a permanent spot for my scales either under the tray or part of the tray. Neither is possible on the machine I bought. Yes the warranty and private forum are excellent and the support given there is wonderful but there have been cases of substantial wait times from reporting to fixing and I'm certainly not comfortable receiving a part, watching a video and working inside a coffee machine. Yes I could put it in the suitcase and send it but I'm not comfortable doing that either. Local support was hugely important to me. So we can agree to disagree

Hi@@Sprometheus, One thing I really don't see mentioned is that the Decent is fantastic for a "fire and forget" machine. If you use a bluetooth scale (I have the Skale 2) with a 3D printed or 3rd party tray cover, you really really don't need to tweak anything about it or even fiddle with the scale. Set the target weight and forget it. This is as close as you can get to a super automatic, without sacrificing quality. You don't have to keep an eye on it, you don't have to take the scale on and off between shots and in order to flush, it's really seamless. It can also be used without the tablet once it's set up, you can control everything from the touch surface. Also, it's very, very noob friendly with it's adaptive flow profiles. It makes getting a "decent" shot (pardon the pun) much easier than on any other machine because of this. There are many other miscellaneous advantages to it, like the perpetual warranty for a very good price (also purchasable as a second owner and after warranty expiration), 3rd party or 3D printed accesories and enhancements, very good support both via warranty and the Decent Diaspora, etc.

Very biased after owning a Decent for 2.5 years. I'm still very excited getting up in the morning to use it to make coffee (and then drink the coffee, of course ;)). Best thing about it: It makes Espresso significantly more approachable as any time of the day, the warm-up is just 2 minutes (240V version). It also makes great filter, black tea (with crema using the pressurized tea-portafilter) and is all around just a reliable and convenient appliance with endless nerdiness on offer whenever you want it. The biggest downside is that you often feel like playing around with all the settings and, as a consequence, end up enjoying many of the worst cups of coffee you ever had. :P

It’s very much an analogue vs. digital setup imo. When I think of music or photography, digital often offers more convenience, control, and reproducibility. Analog usually wins out in longevity and the tactile nature, often said as having a “soul” that digital lacks when it comes to the process. Personally I can see both use cases, I think when it comes to hobbies I prefer analog and when it comes to work I prefer digital.

La Marzocco will in the coming years be the best of the best mechanical machine, the Rolex of Espresso Machines. Always making an amazing mechanical espresso machine. So... craft vs tech. For me it would be the Decent every time. "Half" the price, spot on repeatability, and my shot profile is entirely intentional. I can say to myself "I did exactly _this_ thing, and the result was _this_" and if I do again, _this_ is what I'll get. If I make a change to a parameter, I know exactly what that change was (even if I don't yet know the effect it'll have), then I can observe the effect. I believe that gives me a much better chance of discovering the parameters that affect my shots - and more to the point, being able to reproduce them, time after time. A win for the Decent. Now, where can I get my hands of £5000?

If you ever do volume (family gatherings, parties, pop up bars), the GS3 is the obvious choice. That triple duration on milk steaming will get old, especially when Kyle orders a quad venti mega latte. But for one or two people in a small apartment, the smaller footprint of the Decent could matter more. Regarding control, maybe the endless options on the Decent will be entertaining. But maybe it offers option overload, where no matter how much you tweak the recipe, you fear that there is something better. If it satisfies the need for power and control, that great! But if it becomes a source of anxiety, the simpler and more maintainable GS3 would be a better choice. If you know yourself, the better choice will be obvious.
@scviper

Oddly enough, once I switched to the Decent I actually got less anxiety about my shots. I have a bluetooth scale, 3dprinted tray cover, found a good profile, I haven't tweaked anything in a month. You can create GS3 profile easily and hit that everytime you want and go wild when ready for a change. With the GS3, you are stuck with... the GS3.
@JonFairhurst
@JonFairhurst 4 месяца назад
Of course, you can change the pressure profile with the GS3, so it’s not just one thing. I own a Linea Mini. Aside from temperature, dose, grind, yield, and time, it’s really just one thing. But I’m content with that. I’ve got the big boiler when I have guests, so I’m happy. But yeah, if you don’t do a series of big milk drinks and you value flexibility, the Decent is the better choice.
@JonFairhurst
@JonFairhurst 4 месяца назад
I can relate. I own the (awesome) Kaffelogic Nano 7. I stress with a new bean, trying different combinations, waiting, cupping, repeating… But once I’ve nailed a roast, I purchase purchase ten or twenty pounds, and go into “production mode” where I repeat the formula and let the machine do the rest. The key is to know when to stop tweaking, and maybe when to give up on a bean and try something else, if it doesn’t deliver the goods. It all depends on the personality type. Just tonight I talked with a guy obsessed with mathematical patterns and vortices. He’d probably never settle on a “good enough”!recipe. I bought a Linea Mini some years ago. I debated getting the Decent, but I wanted the big boiler for family gatherings and many, large back-to-back milk drinks. No regrets. I’m happy with life at nine bars. But if I want to fine tune things, I can literally roast a given bean 1C hotter or cooler, or 20s longer or shorter - and taste the difference in the cup. And I can choose from a wide variety of green beans at about a quarter of the price of roasted beans. In many ways controlling the roast is a more fundamental way to change the flavor than profiling a shot. It can affect all brewing methods, not just espresso. Had the Decent had more steam capacity, that would have probably been my choice, but I’m still not sure if the flexibility would be a gift or a curse for me. Maybe a bit of each.

For home use, an interesting comparison would be time and power consumption from cold start through brewing one or two shots and steaming one or two cups of milk. In today’s world, power consumption matters.
@scviper
@scviper 4 месяца назад
I can tell you that actually. With the Decent, two double shots plus milk, from cold, consume about 200W. With my Lelit Bianca, the same thing would use roughly 550W. It gets even worse when you look at monthly usage as an average: With the Lelit Bianca, I had about 32-42kWh / month, so let's say an average of 35kWh. With the Decent, exactly the same usage patterns, I have 9-10kWh / month. Now, the difference could be lower if you are very consciouos about power usage, but in my case, at times, I knew I would want one more coffee in two hours and left the machine on, because it was a pain to wait 25 minutes for it to warm up. The decent is set to turn itself off after 30 minutes of idle, it warms up in about 2.5 minutes, so I never have to worry about it. I will estimate the GS3 uses even more power with its huge boilers.
@markholm7050
@markholm7050 4 месяца назад
@@scviper Thanks. That’s good info, but I want to clear up one detail. You said the Decent consumes about 200 watts to make two shots plus steamed milk from cold start and the Lelit Bianca 550. You did not give the time part of the units. Are they watt minutes, or watt hours? I presume watt seconds is way too small a unit for this situation.

@@scviperInteresting. Thanks for the info. First let me ask how this is not a Chinese machine if it’s manufactured in Hong Kong? To me, if it’s built in china, it’s Chinese. The feel and lack of repeatability making you work to get to close to repeatability makes it more pleasing of a machine. I think repeatability is great but think it should be more of a cafe focus. By repeatability I mean almost no difference between shots. Pretty much every pain point of the decent I echo as well. Decent users now can buy in at a level that was unavailable till recently. Which is really cool and will push other companies to design better hardware and software solutions. Where this leads us, we will see!

lol At the "You're unreliable". Personally I will probably get a (Sanremo You) to upgrade my good old (Rocket R58) this week with the current major sale. It's the most high-tech modernized E61 machine but still a "real espresso machine" with solid parts and made in Italy rather than a ugly cheap plastic cube made in China, thus being way too expensive considering it's made in china with no middle man since it's bought directly from the manufacturer only, no reason then to be that expensive... using a cheap pump too and taking out the fun out of a more classic machine. Also what if software support suddenly stops or if the bald guy dies at Decent?! No way too I'm shipping back such a expensive machine at crazy shipping cost back to China just to get it serviced, and being so high-tech will make it hard to get it repaired by a local repair shop. I don't trust the aftersale support of the Decent. I agree though that super huge bulky machines that takes forever to heat up, with super overkill boilers of 3.5L just make a 40ml espresso is a bit ridiculous, and that having a tiny ugly screen from a 1995 computer isn't cutting it for the asked price of a GS3. These things are outdated beast from the past now, just like muscle cars from the 60'.
