Hope everyone who's lowkey being forced to perform slam poetry will do swell. In the end, it's all about what you feel and how you feel it. For some enchanting and top-tier slam poets, I would recommend Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye. They're wonderful!

What a voice for the narrator! Makes me think of the woman that actually came to my high school and hosted a poetry slam. One of my finest memories, of my last day of high school.

Lol, thanks for the video though it was a bit meta. I'm a total beginner trying to learn how to be a poet, but the video itself was a slam poem so I couldn't understand it!! I'm going to try something else besides TED-ed. Perhaps its because I'm not smart enough, but I find all of TED-ed's videos to be Esoteric, confined to and understandable by only that enlightened inner circle.

please remember that expression of one self in art in any form is art. Look at it as such and whether you like it or not, whether you find fault in the grammar or not, whether you understand it or not, it is art and don't tear it down because you don't get it. let it be what it is.... ART!!!

It was a chilled october night. I still remember the rage of the thunderstorm. The darkness has covered the moonlight I haven't thought of this line... The clouds were roaring like a pride(group of a lion) Haven't thought of this line either 🙃 But i didn't fear slightest As i knew the daylight gonna light up the brightest...... How to be a slam poet in just one step: Speak with the tired old rhythm that all slam poets use, and remember to sound like a cheap imitation of a beat poet. No need to rhyme or really care for what you say, just go ba-bum, ba-ba-bum, ba-ba-bum.

I have an assignment for my Creative Writing class tomorrow, I need to read and perform slam poetry, I hope I don't embarrass myself.

Write everything down, read out loud (test it), cut the fat, read out loud again (test again), and add flavor (style). These 5 steps can be used to write anything from scholarly papers to computer programs. I used them to write this little comment.

Ms. Danley visited my 6th grade class 4 years ago and gave the same presentation. I remember her very well. She called me a "vanilla baby" because I am white.

If you google image search for Gayle Danley, the first couple of images are her standing in the foreground, with a blackboard in the background, and on the blackboard it reads: 1. Write it all down. 2. read it out loud. 3. cut the fat. 4. read it out loud again. 5. add flava.

For the record, you're both correct, depending on your nationality. The 'u' doesn't make a difference if you are in the US, one can read it either way, as can they write it.

While performance is very important, it has become far too influential in the poetry world. Unless people intend for poetry to drop the written form, other qualities need to be emphasized over performance. Because when you send your poem off to some journal or poetry publication you cannot follow along aside it, so you can inform the editors how it should be read. If you are talented and lucky the way the poem should be read will be self explanatory within the very arrangement and power of the words. So when this learned writer says to read it out loud, she may mean so that you can see where to add flourishes in your recital of it. But she may also mean so that you can hear the way the sounds of the words bounce off each other, helping to create the poem.

I AM BAFFLED at how disrespectful people on these threads are. Flava is slang. We ABSOLUTELY can break linguistic rules we understand and teach. Gayle Danley has been in the business about educating children for over 20 years. Your restrictive, one size fits all, offensive and assumptive educational tips to a highly educated educator who has been in the teaching business for decades is NOT useful. A question might be why you believe this woman on a TED talk doesn't know the difference.
