Congratz !!! We owner built our kit home and have lived in it for 1 year and 8 months. It's so satisfying knowing we built our own home and it was done properly.

Can I ask which kit home you would recommend? (Are you also in WA)

I owner build my house 37 years ago, following are some tips that may help. First find and secure a brilliant block of land that will increase in value over time. A block with views that cannot be built out is the most ideal. Consider the orientation of the block, a north facing or south facing house is more solar efficient that east or west facing. Next learn about building houses, ideally by working in the building industry. When you have your plans look for capable trades people. Building in a recession is easier than building in a boom. This is because trades people are looking for work during a recession. Double and triple check that you are hiring capable and honest trades people that will not try to screw you over. Hire a capable site manager to look over your shoulder and provide you with advice and experience. Good luck

Thanks for the information! ☺️ we cover a lot of the above in our second video of this series. Our home is finished now, but this is great info to add into the mix!

This is great timing! I’m looking to build a tiny house (well, small house cause it will be bigger than the standard tiny house and not on wheels). But I’m just at the start now - can’t wait to get into these videos 🏡 ❤

I’m 49 and we are building our dream home in Southern Nevada. By being an owner builder we are saving $150 or more per square foot by being owner builders. And we are cash flowing the build too.

Thanks for this! I am considering doing something in Tasmania. Would you guys consider interviewing someone in a similar situation as yourself from Tasmania. I have just started planning and I am sick of looking at a map of Tasmania on Google Maps. You guys rock!! Respect!!!

Hi would a realistic figure for a non frills 50sqm owner builder square house be around the 50k, 100k or above ? I would have to source a framer, plumber, electrician and so on. (My skill level is currently almost zero)Where are good places to source for example your sceptic tank in the esperance area...and keep up the good work😊

Hey Robert, unfortunately with the current economic climate of Australia I don’t think the amount you mentioned would be realistic at the moment. Materials are very expensive and so are trades (that’s if you can even book them in), everyone is still so busy and prices have gone up a lot in the last few years. This is simply based on our experience and opinions, and would definitely encourage you to research for yourself though. If your skill level is almost zero then I guess the main question to ask yourself is “is it worth it?” We have built a house through a builder and as owner builders, we can safely say that going through a builder is a much more pleasurable experience 😂 owner building is pretty stressful and hard work. The only reason we went that route this time is because Dane could do 90% of the work himself and it saved us a lot of money. I guess it depends on how basic you want to go as well! But to give you an idea, our house is just under 80sqm and cost us about 100k (with Dane doing most of the work). We anticipate that if we went through the exact same process now (3 years later) it would probably be double that. Sorry if that wasn’t overly helpful or encouraging, it’s pretty crazy at the moment 😔 again… this is just an opinion, we’re not experts! We sourced our tanks (including our septics) through Coerco 👍🏼

@@somewhereoutthere. It's all good, the more realistic advice I can get, the better for me down the line, thanks..is it really that windy in the Esperance region?..(I found your videos on being a builder owner quite helpful too) as a general introduction to all the various processes

I’m glad we could be helpful! It really depends on the time of year, but we’re rated at N1 (or N2) I believe, so not too bad on paper. Summer is always windy!

Gday, thanks for the video. Did you have to get certain steps signed off/approved by a licensed builder during the process? Such as after the slab pour, framing, sparky work etc? Or is this coming in part 2? Thanks 😃
@somewhereoutthere.
@somewhereoutthere. 9 месяцев назад
Hey! Yep, I’ll talk about that when we get the owner builder application part. But basically the short answer is no, you don’t have to when you become an owner builder. Obviously all of our plans etc have all been professionally engineered. Depending on your shire, they’ll send someone out to check your progress during the build. We only had someone come out once whilst we were framing. But essentially, when you become an owner builder you take on the “role” and responsibilities of a registered builder. This means if we sell our house within 7 years of it being built then we would need to get indemnity insurance. We also had insurance covering tradies & anyone helping on site. It’s pretty nerve wracking, but worth it. I hope this helps ☺️

Thanks for the reply, we are looking at going down the owner builder path on our farm, its a decent drive from the nearest town too so we might be left at peace 😁 cheers and thanks for the videos
