Back with Dan and his Beechcraft Baron twin engine airplane, which he has owned and flown for 12 years. In this interview video, Dan gives us some estimates on what it cost to own and fly a twin engine aircraft like the D55 Beechcraft Baron. You get an idea of the airplane’s operational cost, airplane fuel consumption, insurance and hangar cost.
Also Dan is selling his Beechrcraft Baron. For more details about the aircraft please call Dan @ 404 626 9300 or see the link below.

This is what I love about the pilot community he even put his phone number on a video to talk to people about his flying experience. I may not have been a pilot very long as I am a student pilot but this is the best community truly

Having flown a BE-55E for 27 years this owner nailed the maintenance and operating costs of the Baron. Good progressive maintenance from a trusted A&P is key to safety and peace of mind. On another note, this Baron owner/pilot was smart enough to know when to step away from flying. In my 40+ years of flying the pilots I've respected the most knew when stop flying. And I did the same as this owner/pilot.

I don’t know about any of his other costs but 500 bucks a month to store that plane is crazy. Our local airport charges 30 bucks a month for the same plane.🤡
@mseifried5
@mseifried5 4 года назад
I ran the numbers again and get about $26k a year including $15 and hour for each engine towards an engine rebuild/etc at 2000 hours time. (That's flying about 100 hours a year.) Keep in mind some cities cost less or more than $500 a month for rent. As an owner you can do a lot of basic maintenance and we did when we owned a Piper Lance for ten years. Another way to make it more affordable is to have one or more partners. Another way is to be able to write off expenses for use. Many small businesses could use a General Aviation Aircraft to make them much more efficient in there jobs. Light twins can be reasonable for purchase because most owners don't want the second engine for maintenance costs and added fuel consumption. Some owners want a second engine if they intend to fly a lot at night, over a lot of water, and do flying in poor weather on a regular basis. I flew the 55 for about 100 hours and I would describe it as sweet flying. It has a very handsome sounding exhaust note as it flys over your head about 1000 feet up. (Fraternally, Mark S. A Professional Pilot)

Soooo...... for this plane, just the Hangar costs, Insurance, and maintenance fees will be around $1000 monthly. Taking trips in itself, for example 1 per month, burning 24 gallons @ 185 knots, ranging on average 200 mile trip would be $168. Total would be $1336 per year; for a grand total of $13,336 per year. Definitely gives the monetary perspective to think about when owning an aircraft. Very informative video. Thank you Mojo!!!

I usually fly my planes as high as they will go to discover the true service ceiling. Agree on having O2 on board, just in case. One of my Cherokees would do about 17K feet and I felt a certain need for supplemental oxygen. Barrons are very comfortable planes, decent fuel burn for speed and quieter than an Apache. When I started flying a 152 rented for $12.50/hour, wet. Annuals can be a horrible experience but nothing can ruin the joy of owning your own plane more than compliance with an AD.

Heavy rain and maybe seconds of light hail can cause the nose rash, but we're looking at an airplane over 50 years old and maybe the original paint job. To Mark below, I believe if you want something, go get it. Don't wine about it. Many men like to talk about flying, in front of their girl friends and some actually just do it. I paid for my private license in high school and continuied at college with the rest of my ratings. You can buy a descent Cessna 172 for around 50k. Organize a partnership of 2-4 pilots. It's an excellent plane to get your private and instrument licenses in . Then once complete with these ratings get a Cessna 182 etc. You can actually do a lot of the maintenance on a small plane. Change the tires, brakes, batteries, oil, filter, etc to save costs. You can do owner assisted annuals. Fuel costs are very low now and there will be some great buys on singles due to the Covid Pandemic. (My insurance guy believes this.) Naples, Florida and other cities have flying clubs but I think the best way to learn is to buy a Cessna 172 and share it. Heck, a group of ten can buy it or even a high school can be the owner. From Mark S. in Naples Prof. pilot.

"No damage history at all" as we are looking at damage to the front of the plane. Lol... That 3 day trip is cut down to 6 hours at a cost of about $3000 to $4000 per month real money. So sad that aviation is still only for the rich. I mean this is a great plane and the gentlemen seems like a truly amazing guy, but when a 50 year old plane still costs $30K to $50K each year of ownership, just to own, the general public will never be able to get into it.

I also was wondering about the damage to the nose. I'm not sure that will buff out. And Mr. Sharrock is right, even an airplane this old has a price tag that is out of reach for the majority of people. When I was young, many average people could enjoy aviation, including myself. Now, sadly, it is only for the wealthy.

Assuming you have no mortgage or monthly cap cost [paid cash for the plane] that's about $2,200 / mo and $140 / hr for routines. But what are the non-routine items; avionics, actuators, pumps, valves, etc. I see he needs some elbow grease on that tail cone and radome, or he could spend x5 and send them both to a shop. And of course you want yourself trained and keeping nav database as with anything else. The airplane doesn't cover ground fast enough for me at this cost. With his hours he'd have no trouble getting insured on an Aerostar and he could enjoy pressurization with a little more expensive annuals.
@Kaktus965
@Kaktus965 8 месяцев назад
Pressurization and turbochargers (x2) are a BIG step up maintenance wise. Annuals would be much more than a little more expensive…
@gendaminoru3195

@Kaktus965
@Kaktus965 8 месяцев назад
@gendaminoru3195 It's far more complicated than that. Longer wingspan requires a larger hangar. Many expensive parts (like the windshield) are pressure cycle-limited. And not cheap. Higher fuel burn due to turbos. MUCH higher engine overhaul cost due to turbos, wastegates, plumbing, etc. Anecdotaly, an owner who had both a 600 and a 601P said the 601P works out to around $100/hr MORE than the 600. According to this pilots estimates it costs $25,448.00 per year with fuel costs for 100hrs, divide that into hourly and this plane is costing him: $254.48 per operating hour. Thank you Jesus for Rotax engines haha! Newer planes cost more, but make up for it in maintenance and fuel savings.
@singleproppilot
@singleproppilot 4 года назад
I don’t know what newer planes you’re talking about. If you go buy a brand new G58 Baron, the only model that’s still being produced, it still has the same IO-520 engines, burning about the same amount of fuel. Only difference is a new Baron will set you back $1.5M, and the insurance will be sky high because you’re insuring such a huge asset. Maintenance costs will be not be much less than a well-maintained legacy airplane. Really the only reasons to buy a new airplane are if you’re a charter operator and want something great looking that’s going to pay for itself by being flown a heck of a lot, or if you just have money to burn and want a status symbol.

@@singleproppilot The DA42NG for example will also cruise at 170-180 KTAS, and while it does have less payload than the Baron it only uses 13-16 gph JET A combined (that alone will save you 50-75 bucks per hour or even more), i think the oil change intervalls are also longer and oil burn should be less of an issue. Also, if you have a newish plane you know it probably hasnt been abused, maintenance and repair cost should be lower and easier to predict (especially if you get a warranty). You also get the latest avionics of course, and a G1000 equipped Baron will set you back quite some cash too.

Great job with videos. I would seriously consider this upgrade from my piper lance. Shoot me the sellers info and I will contact. Thanks!

$2,500 a year for an annual on an old Baron - guy must be a politician. $2,500 a year for insurance maybe with a weak policy and a low hull value.
