Dinty Moore Beef Stew..... just about everyone has eaten it at least once in their life. Good or bad it's still a very popular canned processed food. In this video I do a side by side comparison of three different brands of beef stew to see which is the superior canned beef stew.

TVP = soy. Glorified tofu. Not what I consider a real food product. I guess the companies use this cheap crap to "stretch" the real meat, cutting cost.

I can only imagine it has become more commonplace to include vegetable protein in canned or microwave-oven foods. :p

When we went camping in the 1970's we always had at least one meal of Dinty Moore. We would open it and put it into the coals of the campfire. It tasted good after a day of swimming, fishing, hiking, and so on... and then came the s'mores !!yum !!/:)

You know, I STILL don't get the appeal of the S'more! The best part of the marshmallow is the flaky black part, by far- after that, the marshmallow is just inedible 😝!! But, people like 'em!.. *btw/fyi- There is an excellent video- I THINK it might -?- be on the "Everything is Terrible" RU-vid channel- about a poor "..Season Threaten[ing]...Marshmallow Farmers' Livelihoods" or something like that; if even one person sees that video due to my writing this, it will be worth it. Truly. Tha's S'More! ;>

Dinty Moore used to be a staple in my house when my kids were growing up. Of course, that was before they started adding TVP to it and boosting the sodium. We'd have it about once a month, usually served on a bed of rice to soak up the gravy. It was an easy, quick meal for those nights when I didn't want to cook. It's changed a lot since then and, while I still keep a few cans in my emergency food preps, I give them away when they get close to expiring. The only way I'll eat the stuff these days is if that's all there is.

We have the Dinty More Stew in the cupboard in case of an emergency. I had a bunch of kids over and I opened up four cans, about the size you show. I added paprika, onion and garlic powders, sweet basil and about 6 bay leaves. I let it come slow up to a summer while I made mashed potatoes (to help with the over salty stew), and some corn on the cob from our freezer. I took the mashed potatoes and spread it out with a hollow in the center, this is where I laddled the stew and the every one has a half a cob of corn. Amazingly my picky grandson went back for seconds. What was left is enough for dinner for myself tonight. 🤓

Once upon a time, I was so broke. I had to go to the food bank for some food. The box they gave me had a bunch of different Southgate products. The beef stew was one of them. My cousin ate the beef stew and got sick afterwards. I tried Southgate's ripoff spaghettios. The texture was slimy and terrible. They didn't taste very good either. Avoid Southgate products at all costs. You're probably better off eating from the trash... I wish I was kidding, but I'm not.

You can buy a used crock pot or get one new. Throw some beef stew meat in the pot, with peeled, cut potatoes, carrots, and some lipton onion soup mix. Cook it on high for several hours, and you will have a really yummy stew. And plenty of leftovers for the next two days.

Larry, yet again, another great video! Just an FYI, Textured Vegetable Protien or TVP is a soy based protien that is used as a meat extender. I actually have some in my food storage. I am not a huge fan of soy anything, but in an SHTF, I would use it to stretch ground beef etc. You can actually buy it at the store where they sell Bob's Red Mill products or on Amazon. Simple truth, though in products like this the TVP is used to make the meat stretch, by grinding it up shooting it through a tube or mold and then cutting into uniform chunks to resemble beef cubes. I know Ick! Right? So, let me know if you want some TVP I'll send you some! LOL!
@TheWolfePit
@TheWolfePit 8 лет назад
+Noreen's Kitchen That's kinda what I thought the TVP was for as soon as I bit into the Dinty Moore meat....very spongy, non meat like texture. I think in a SHTF survival situation, it's a great option to help ration the meat supply. But until then I think I'll try to pass in the future on the TVP. I appreciate the offer though.....BUT when the SHTF, I will be knocking on your front door for good eats!! LOL Thank you for watching!

Textured veggie protein has begun to show up in beef burger patties around here. I don't know why, but I get an icky feeling about 3 bites into any burger made with one of those patties. I don't get ill, but I just start to feel like I'm experiencing the day after a hangover. I think it may be related to all the salt put into discount burgers, which is where you typically run into that tvp. I've picked up on it completely blind several times (showed up at bbq, someone hands me a burger, 3 bites in I ask if there is tvp or 'soy protein' in the burger and every time I have nailed it.)

We lived on canned stew, spam, kielbasa, hot dogs , beans, potatoes and beer for 5 days because we were in the mountains with 0 electricity and only a camping stove to cook. Ad into the equasion the fact that we drank copious amounts of beer. I had a physical the day after I came back. IThe dr wanted me to go to the hospital because my bp was so high. Moral of the story this type of food is really bad for you but tastes good. It is ok once in a while but not good to eat on a daily basis. I had high blood pressure to begin with but this diet and tons of beer for 5 days straight put me up into stroke teritory. Next time I am going to bring canned tuna and salmon lol

kevin6154 That's a great story! My GF is a Nurse and has told me storys of people with High blood pressure who are at such risk they have to give up chinese food, canned food, ect. They are in hospitalization risk and don't want to give it up. Its really hard because salt/sodium creates an chemical reaction with the tongue and that's why food tastes soooooo good when its high in salt. If it weren't for those pesky risks of heart attack, stroke, edema, embolisms..... : D
@kevin6154
@kevin6154 7 лет назад
351cleavland what got me is the fact that we basically drank beer 24/7. enough water say a gallon plus a day would have flushed the sodium out. But alcohol further dehydrates the system and raises bp as well. its hard to bring fresh meat with no refrigeration. guess we should have drank less and fished more cause fresh trout is very healthy lol.

There are reasons why the Dinty Moore meat doesn't look like stew meat, has the mouth feel of a wet sponge, and doesn't taste much like beef. First, what you are seeing as chunks of "meat" are, legally, all meat except for a few additives. One such additive, which doesn't have to be listed in the ingredients, is a yeast extractive that comes from a strain of yeast related to that in a yeast infection: Candida (used to be known as "Torula"). Think of a paper plant as a digestive system; the waste matter is used as a growth medium for Candida, which feeds on the wood sugars. That Candida is then harvested and converted to a powder through spray drying. This is the substance that adds, depending upon the exact strain and processing techniques, meaty flavor to just about anything. And they'll need every little bit of meaty flavor they can add, because the "meat" is not all the muscle meat that you think it is. It is made from hearts that have been exsanguinated and deodorized, lungs that have been obliterated -- and lots and lots of tendons, gristle, cartilage, and other such things that are normally only eaten in the most historically impoverished areas of the world. But don't worry, because they make it all edible by adding the same compound that is redolent in a decomposing dead body: Adenosine Triphosphate, or ATP. ATP breaks down the cells and makes them mushy. See all those little tiny whitish bumps on the chunks of Dinty Moore Stew meat? Those are the gristle-y bits that were frozen and blitzed into little fragments before they were treated with ATP and then mixed in with the hearts and lungs and a bit of muscle meat. This is where the sponginess comes from. Add some Caramel Color (because without it it looks utterly horrid), plop lumps out on a conveyor belt, cook them, and there you have it. This is also why you see much more "meat" in the Dinty Moore product, because it's so cheap to make; notice that the others, as paltry as their meat offerings are, actually look like real meat. Bon Appétit!

Adam Churvis Interesting cause I’ve heard the same about McDonald’s hamburgers being 100% beef...I heard it is 100% beef but it’s muscle meat from the cow all the heart, lungs and cartilage mixed into their burgers. Disgusting!!!

The Dinty Moore beef stew trick from the old college days in the 60's. Get the beef stew, empty the can into a baggie and hide it in your jacket. Go into the bar near campus, and you and your buddy drink some beers. All of a sudden kinda yell, "I'm gonna be sick" and act like you're puking on the bar. Squeeze out the Dinty Moore while hunched over. Then your buddy reaches across and grabs some chunks and starts eating. It was always good for some laughs. I never did it, but I watched two guys pull it off in a crowded bar one night. The old days! Kids don't know how to have fun anymore.

The only person who could stomach this crap is someone who has never had a home cooked stew. We were very poor growing up and my parents would often have denty moore or worse chef boyardi ravioli. for dinner split between four of us. To this day (many years later) the sight of either of these canned poisons makes me wretch.

Richard Bouska, seriously, if you bought plain milk and it tasted like puke, it's called 'spoiled'. Check your best before date. Simple milk NEVER tastes 'like puke'.

I want to say this so that everyone understands. You talk about a budget and feeding a family. You use the $10.00 a meal. In 30 days, and eating only one meal a day, that is $300.00 dollars a month. I don't think that is much of a budget. If you consider that most people eat at least 3 times a day, even if you are talking 2 people and using everything that they have left over, they are still going to fall short on food. I know people that are on government benefits, here in Ohio and they get around $175.00 a month for 2 people. And this doesn't take into account that one or more people in the household may have a special needs diet. So if I take $175.00 and divide that by 30 it equals $5.83 per day for food. Now divide that by 3 and you get $1.94 per meal per day. Now you know why some people do have to eat out of the dollar stores.
@TheWolfePit
@TheWolfePit 7 лет назад
Your information is well intended, but it's simply NOT true. Here's a playlist of meals that will feed 6 or more people or 1-2 people for several days for $10 (+/- change). People regardless of income do NOT have to resort Dollar Tree garbage food......it's not a bargain. I do not make these videos to demean people who are low income, but to help them and show them what they're eating, that they're not bargains and they can eat better meals for the same or less money. I agree with you I used to eat home cooked meals for about $100 per month and they had solid meat in them every day. Thias was also in sweden where food is more expensive than in the US. These canned meals would probably cost closer to $4. Old world peasant dishes go a long way for not much money especially if you use so falled offal like tongues and tails of beef for example which are actually some of the best parts of the animal when it comes to flavour. You should do a Brazilian Feijoada (Simular to Casoulet) in your budget meals series. It's a very filling cheap and nutricious meal.

damn! 175 bucks a month for 2 people.? for food! Holy Bleep that's good living. I spend maybe 60 bucks a months for food and I know I eat well. I mean 1lb of 80% lean beef is like 4 dollars. 5 Chicken breast is like 6 dollars, a pound of rice is like 2.00 you get where I'm going with this? People that blow throw money like that spend it on crap fast food and then come home and have nothing left to buy groceries with so they buy a can of beef crap from the dollar store and some generic cheese and soda or whatever and then complain they don't get enough money for food. I know the game. For $10.00 you can eat quite well.

I like the southgate But, If I have it I usually serve it as "gravy" over Rice. It's good storage food for "survival" caches (keeps forever.) And having a non pull tab lid makes it better for that. And the "Textured Vegetable Protein"...Isn't that what they called "Soylent Green"?
@dualactionsurgilator
@dualactionsurgilator 6 лет назад
TVP is a soy based protein used as a meat replacement. It is used to stretch everything from beef to tuna as a cost savings. It is also used in cheap burger patties.

Larry, TVP is the MAIN ingredient in dry dog food! I'm not kidding. I used to operate a "yard dog" for the Alpo plant in Crete, Nebraska. Whenever the TVP dock would call for a trailer of the stuff, I had to drop whatever else I was doing at the time and get it up there ASAP. If the TVP dock were ever to run dry of it, even for a couple of minutes, the whole plant would shut down!

I like the Dinty Moore stew, I keep it on hand for quick meals after a hurricane. It used to come with peas many years back. You can give it more of a kick by adding in a small can of peas and either worstershire or A1 sauce. Also onion powder or flakes, and black pepper. Fun to sop up the gravy with white bread.
