The Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, and Members of the Sovereign's Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary, popularly known as the Beefeaters, are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. In principle they are responsible for looking after any prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels; they have also conducted guided tours since the Victorian era.
Since 2011, there have been 37 Yeomen Warders and one Chief Warder.[1][2]
All warders are retired from the Armed Forces of Commonwealth realms and must be former warrant officers with at least 22 years of service. They must also hold the Long Service and Good Conduct medal.

That wonderful comment about William 1st building the White Tower "stupidly under the flight path of 2 airports" - reminded me of an equally splendid instance I witnessed in 1973 in Berkhamsted Castle. A small party of American visitors were being given a conducted tour and as I walked past I overheard a large American lady with a blue rinse perm hairstyle (popular in the '70's with the more mature in years lady) say - "I can't understand why they built the castle so close to the railway".... yeah well - concept of history - not. After the Battle of Hastings, William marched on London, but found the bridges held against him. Unable to cross, he turned left and marched along the south bank of the River Thames until he came to the first place at which the Thames can be forded with an army - and that's at Wallingford. That brought him and his army around the Chiltern Hills and down toward London from the Northwest. Knowing by that time that the English army from Mercia had not been present at the battle, he took the precaution of stopping where the valley narrowed at Berkhamsted between the steep hills of the Chilterns and the marshy ground and built a castle there to guard his rear. The great English magnates came to Berkhamsted and submitted to William there.

Greetings from the United States (Louisville, Kentucky). I watched this video, and Bill was a wonderfully entertaining presenter/guide. Judging by the date, he has been retired for just over 2 years, now. I hope he's enjoying his retirement. I did that same tour in 1988, and the presenter was very similar. I remember a joke he told about if a King was named King John, then the initials on his shirt would be JR, which would appeal to fans of the 'Dallas' television show. That joke was funny at the time.

I visited the Tower with a group of cousins. It was one of the hottest days recorded in London. Bill, on duty was dressed in his full regalia, heavy woollen uniform, felt hat, breaches and buckled shoes. My cousin, wearing the thinnest shirt, shorts and flip flops said to Bill “I bet you’re hot in all that uniform “. Bill, didn’t reply, instead called on all visitors, “you are all allowed ONE Stupid Question” ….looking at my hapless cousin he proclaimed “This man has just used his”…….”does anyone else have a stupid question?” …what a great, quick witted force of nature Bill is. 😂👍
