Beekeeping for Beginners- Adding Honey Supers - Update 6/12/2016

I add Honey Supers to the beehives that sit on top of the brood boxes. The Honey Supers hold foundation-less frames that will hold the honey. I talk about the Queen Excluder that prevents the Queen Bee from entering the honey super and laying brood. I will try the Excluder on one hive and not in the other. There is already a lot of capped honey in both hives.

You should pull out an end frame before a middle frame mate, give yourself some room. doing it the way you do carries a very very high risk of killing your queen, not to mention squishing the poor girls when you mash the frame back in! Rookie move

Good job but when you add supers you need to remove sugar water. If you don't what you will get in the super is sugar water.

Hi Jon. If you are not careful with manipulating the freshly drawn comb on the foundation-less frames you will find that the bees will make crazy comb all over the place. Quite often they will build it across the frames rather than along it. To get them started with foundation-less frames I alternate frames with 1 foundation , 1 empty, 1 foundation and so on. Once the foundation-less are more than half drawn out you can lift the frames with foundation up to the next honey super and correspondingly replace with foundation-less frames in the box you lifted the frames from. Your hives are still looking a bit weak so don't be in rush to super up. They haven't started on the outside frames yet. You can also pull a honey frame out to the side of the box and move in an undrawn frame for them to start working on. Have fun. My best hive yielded 105kg in March this year, it started as a 5 frame Nuc in October 2015. All the best, from New Zealand

Glad to see your lit smoker at the ready. I often had trouble keeping mine going. One time it went out during a hive opening that went bad. I got severely stung, even with a full bee suit on. I developed an allergic reaction to honey bee stings and had to give up the hobby after more than 10 years. I now get monthly allergy shots so I don't have to give up gardening.

Looks lovely. As you say, the queen excluder will keep the queen from entering the honey super thereby ensuring that you will not get any brood in the honey that you want to harvest. I suppose that it is a personal choice but I always use them (except in the winter of course) and find them to be great "management" tools.

3 or 4 weeks? You should be having a pretty good nectar flow going on. They may fill that entire box in a week. I've certainly had bees draw and fill a medium super in a week. I'd go back sooner. I would also not put sugar syrup on a hive with a super on if I intended to harvest (which you mentioned how you were going to harvest via crush and strain so I assume you do mean to harvest this). Honey supers and feeders should not be on at the same time. Great video, nice looking bees!

Hello, you have add those honey supers to early, this brood box should be full of bees when you adding a honey super. Another thing is to add brood frame as a bait to your super, because you put up queen excluder, probably your bees they will block this excluder with wax, they will feel too much cold in brood. Best regards Lucas

Pasieka Roxeth also, I think it's illegal to have feeders on your hive at the same time you have honey supers

Nothing wrong feeding bees. But you should only put the supers on when there is a nectar flow. If there is a flow, the bees have no problem getting honey and thus no need to feed. If you feed and have the super on, then the bees will fill the super with your sugar water. It's most likely illegal to sell sugar water as honey.

Good brood pattern. Are both brood boxes full? My bee are slower than yours. The bees could use the sugar water while drawing out the comb but they will just put it in the comb if it stays there. You will have sugar syrup not honey when you extract it. I did that one year too.
@timbrown540
@timbrown540 8 лет назад
david gardner is correct. there should be no feeding when honey supers are on.
@hivesmanawatu3337

The hives are looking good - really nice quiet bees, I think you got some good queens by the looks of that and the brood pattern. I've found if there is a band of capped honey above the brood, the queen doesn't (usually!) go above it to lay so I can often get away without a QE. I'll be interested to see how adding a whole box of foundationless in one hit goes. Keep us updated!

Best of luck this year!! Have the flowers (you cleared the areas for to help the bees) bloomed yet and if so are the bees pollinating them?

I apricate the low gentile working. I added a super yesterday and very new at it. I moved some of the frames up that have some capped and open with nectar too. I tried last year but likely too late and they didn't build comb. It is just starting some flow apparently and blackberries not even blooming (a bit of time) ... I have foundation frames. My goral is to get them to draw comb. The second of two hives I have a shallow and not medium to put on . just because that is all I have for now.. (frames etc. with it) so I hope they will draw and pack. I decided to not use excluder for now ... it may slow them from wanting to go and build.

I like the updates, Jon. BTW, If you are interested, or know someone who is, there's a keeper in Carlstadt, NJ that has 17 of 33 established hives that he needs to move due to local neighbor complaints and ordinance limitations. He has them on capitalist. Cheers!

Jon, at first I could really care less about these bees. But as you go on and keep explaining them, I have really come to looking forward to your updates. I just wondered if all the pieces to the hive just sit on top of each other, what keeps it from coming apart in a good windy storm? Good Luck this year.

The bees "glue" the boxes together with a substance called propolis. They produce this using their saliva, sap, and wax. They also close up unwanted gaps and holes in the hive with it. Good question

is it neccesary to feed bees the sugary water?
@uswwt
@uswwt 3 года назад
hehe, enjoy your sugar water "honey" :) You need to STOP feeding when the honey super is on. Otherwise the "honey" will be mostly sugar water. Actually, you need to stop feeding well before adding honey super and let the bees store some real honey in the brood box(es) below. That way the the honey in the supers will be good quality. Bees are known to move their honey store up. So if you feed heavily before supering, you can almost guarantee to have sugar water in the honey.

Instead of having to use a hive tool, put an eye scew at each end of the section. You can then use a simple hook to remove the section.

If you plan on harvesting from that hive, you'll need to take the feeder off immediately otherwise you won't be harvesting actual honey. Really unethical practice to sell or distribute from a hive that is being fed sugar syrup with honey supers on.
